Shaman’s Altar budget deck series, Gonti.

Commander / EDH Budget Control Mono-Black Primer

Ghostshaman33

welcome to the 2nd installment of the shamans altar. A budget deck series by yours truly.

The goal of this series is to rekindle the essence of commander (EDH, if you’re an old timer like me). Fun decks with out breaking the bank. In this series of primers I will work my way through the color pie, keeping each deck at a maximum of $50 Some decks, much like the first one, will come in cheaper. I’ll include some upgrades at the bottom for those with deeper pockets.

This deck came in at $65.

with the exclusion of Panharmonicon/Erratic Portal/Black Sun's Zenithand Helm of the Host we get much closer to the budget but I feel the deck would suffer too greatly without them.

So now that you’ve made it this far let’s begin with a mono black commander Gonti, Lord of Luxury with his unique ability in black to steal from other player’s libraries he seemed like a no brainer for flavor and intrigue. This deck has lots of recursion to keep him hitting the battlefield over and over.

Panharmonicon and Strionic Resonator will copy his ability

Conjurer's Closet and Erratic Portal bounce him in and out of the field

And Helm of the Host makes non-legendary copies of him for added steals.

One of these would be the first thing I tutor for.

Here we find cards that will help bring back Gonti from the grave to proc that triggered ability multiple times. Sac Gonti and bring him back over and over to steal your opponents goodies. Living Death is like a board reset and good under certain circumstances as with Infernal Offering which helps your opponent too. Profane Command is a work horse in this deck with a few options to choose Entomber Exarch/Hell's Caretaker/Fortuitous Find are some good options to bring Gonti back from the grave
One thing black does really well is getting rid of the crap we don’t like. Things like Black Sun's Zenith/Murder/Doom Blade/In Garruk's Wake/Nevinyrral's Disk/Tragic Slip/Life's Finale/Decree of Pain easily get rid of pesky disturbances to our insidious plot.
Here we find a suite of cards to help us cycle through our deck faster to get the pieces we need. Greed and Underworld Connections make for reusable draw, as does Ob Nixilis Reignited though he is more subject to removal

Some other cards that do well are Morbid Curiosity/Altar's Reap/Grim Haruspex

For tutors we have Diabolic Tutor/Increasing Ambition/Diabolic Revelation To target things like Panharmonicon/Strionic Resonator/Helm of the Host and Erratic Portal

As a second line of defense to get Gonti bouncing about we have a few secondary sac outlets like Morbid Curiosity/Sepulchral Primordial/Kheru Mind-Eater/Hedonist's Trove
I find this deck really fun to pilot and think Gonti can be an exceptional commander in a competitive scenario with a few upgrades. Black has a wealth of tutors and board wipes at our disposal like Damnation Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor

I hope you’ve enjoyed this budget primer, next up we will be looking at a mono green commander Yisan, the Wanderer Bard
