GP Las Vegas, and the end of Hogaak —Aug. 26, 2019

On the final weekend Hogaak was legal in Modern, I took him to GP Vegas! The deck, of course, felt extremely solid. My play was pretty tight (especially considering this was my first-ever GP), but unfortunately it was only good enough for a 4-3 drop:

  • Infect: 0-2
  • Abzan Combo: 2-0
  • E-Tron: 1-2
  • E-Tron: 2-0
  • E-Tron (again?!?): 2-1
  • Jund: 2-1
  • UW Ctrl (and the end of my Day 2 dreams): 1-2

Thanks to everyone who made comments and suggestions along the way! They're all archived here or behind the View Archive button below.

Cheers!

Has it been confirmed that Hogaak remains legal during the GP?

Kjartan,
Of course, lol. GP Vegas is 22-25 Aug, and the next B&R is on 26 Aug.

If you fear Surgical Extraction or expect snapcaster to make any sort of appearance Ground Seal is rather good, it also only shuts down Golgari Thug 's death trigger on your end.

PurePwnage,
Yeah, I generally just delete the spam.

Demarge,
I had tested Silent Gravestone in one of the very earliest versions of the deck, and frankly found it to be kinda meh. IMO, Surgical Extraction just isn't really worth a dedicated sideboard slot, plus the trigger from Golgari Thug is often quite useful (e.g., getting a Satyr Wayfinder back when we need gas or a Land drop, and getting a Hogaak back when our opp has a Grafdigger's Cage ). The cantrip of Ground Seal is nice though, so I'll keep it in mind if Surgical becomes more of a threat.

Thanks!

Are the Caterpillars nessicary in the main?

shadow63,
No, Caustic Caterpillar is not necessary. Like I mention in the 'Card Choices' section though, I love having a 1-drop that Convokes for Hogaak's Hybrid cost and provides a mainboard answer to Ensnaring Bridge and the occasional maindeck gravehate card. Insolent Neonate and Abrupt Decay / Assassin's Trophy are other solid options for the slots.

I'm sure it's been asked and you've already thought about it, but why not the always classy Liliana of the Veil ? 1 or 2 copies could be an asset!

Naksu,
I haven't really thought about Liliana of the Veil too much, tbh. I could see her in the sideboard maybe, for the super-grindy matchups? But in general, the deck needs 1- and 2-drop Creatures (to Convoke Hogaak and trigger Vengevine ) more than it needs a 3-drop Planeswalker. That said, the biggest reason may just be that I don't happen to have any, and she's still painfully expensive :-D

Thanks!

I just thought it would be a great way to discard Hogaak, along with her control toolkit built in. Faithless Looting seems to be your only other discard outlet and you probably should, or should not take into account that your only copy that game sits in your hand without a faithless looting. But it's all preferrence really, you play with what you know. I hope you get some results this time, but I'm sad you're not running ponza now.. :<

Spellskite could also be a SB card to consider for protecting Haakon. Have you also thought about Vexing Shusher against blue, or Dash Hopes against decks you end up racing against most of the time.

Oh, and one that I forgot was Bitterblossom . Feeds Hogaak steadily, but does nothing for Vengevine .. Still I think it could be more on the positive for making fliers.
