Sen Triplets - "I Play Your Cards"

Commander / EDH WUB (Esper)

Flemzor

This is my first commander deck I started putting together sometime in 2012. It's my favorite by far and I've done all I can to add the most powerful cards I can to it. It's gone through many changes but the theme is the same: rather than focusing on artifacts and abusing Sen Triplets alone, I prefer a general "I play your cards" approach with a side of Esper Good-Stuff. I used to have more creatures like Daxos of Meletis and Nightveil Specter but cut them for power. I also had more redundant clone and mind control effects but found that they sometimes clogged my hand.

Cards in the maybe-board include Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite among others. I have a short list of cards I intend to add as soon as I can trade for them including Academy Ruins to go off with Mindslaver and Mana Crypt because Mana Crypt!

This deck is super fun to play. I love casting every card and it's different every time I play, especially against new decks. If you hate searching libraries and shuffling, it may not be for you... but then why are you playing EDH?! Thanks!

Update 04/30/2016: I found I frequently had plenty of mana but would run out of cards to soon (moreso in 1v1). Since I removed the Terramorphic Expanse, I should have enough basic targets for Evolving Wilds so I took out a Basic Plains and added Phyrexian Arena. Incidentally, Scalding Tarn still has 6 targets, less than the other on-color fetches.

Update 06/16/2016: Removed Tamiyo, the Moon Sage for my new EMA Baleful Strix. Strix holds swords well and lowers my curve while providing a good body and a cantrip. Looking to trade for some more EMA cards including Mana Crypt and Toxic Deluge.

Update 07/18/2016: Removed Venser, the Sojourner, Lord of the Void, and Fabricate for Temporal Mastery, Steelshaper's Gift, and Vampiric Tutor. Lord was good when I hit someone with it but frequently sat in my hand plus I want to lower the curve of the deck as a whole. I loved the idea of blinking Treachery with Venser but it rarely happened. I've rediscovered the power of Time Warp guaranteeing the Sen Triplets trigger so I added in Temporal Mastery which works great with Mystical Tutor and the newly added Vampiric Tutor. Finally, while I'm second-guessing the equipment package again, I decided to double-down and include Steelshaper's Gift to grab the appropriate Sword to protect Triplets.

Update 08/16/2016: Removed Wrexial, the Risen Deep, Ob Nixilis Reignited, and Utter End and added Mother of Runes, Batterskull, and Anguished Unmaking. Wrexial fit the original theme of the deck but for whatever reason has been underwhelming, often not getting through or having a target in the graveyard. Mother adds more protection for Sen Triplets. Ob Nixilis looks great on paper but I was never happy to draw it. Anguished Unmaking is 1 CMC less than Utter End and Batterskull helps off-set the life loss, especially with all the equipment tutors.

Update 03/29/2017: Been a while since I've modified this deck. With MM3 came a much cheaper Venser, Shaper Savant so I finally put him in the deck in place of Stunt Double. Now that I have more bounce, I removed Thran Dynamo for the Fellwar Stone so I can cast red and green spells better. Finally, I removed Steelshaper's Gift for Trophy Mage which can not only find the swords but can also wear them. Plus she can grab Chromatic Lantern to cast off-color spells or even Mimic Vat!

Update 09/05/2017: This was my biggest update in a long time. I've recently been re-building my Brimaz, King of Oreskos deck which can make better use of the sword package so I pulled it out entirely: 3 Swords, Lightning Greaves, and Stoneforge Mystic all gone. With those cards leaving, Trophy Mage lost its usefulness so I got rid of that too. I thought about keeping Batterskull as I wasn't moving it to Brimaz but decided to remove that as well. The whole equipment package started back when this was my only deck and I wanted to play all my favorite cards, but the truth is it doesn't really fit with this deck. I also removed Sphinx of the Steel Wind which was hard to do. It's one of my favorite creatures in Magic and it always felt good to cast, but in the end it's just a big dork so I removed it to lower the curve. I was left with 8 empty slots to fill but I've had some luck with packs and trading recently so I was able to keep the power-level high with my replacements. I added Cryptic Command, Glen Elendra Archmage, and Force of Will to provide much-needed counterplay to the deck (along with $100+ of value). For some added draw, I put Rhystic Study back in (we'll see how well that works) along with Sphinx's Revelation to take advantage of all my mana-rocks. With the added three instants, I decided to finally test out Torrential Gearhulk. There are now a total of 13 instants in a deck of 99. Not sure if that's worth it but I'm eager to find out. Since the swords were there to help protect Sen Triplets, I needed something new for protection so I added Kira, Great Glass-Spinner. The only reason she wasn't in there earlier was the non-bo with the swords so it makes sense to put her in now. Finally, with one slot left I added Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver. I'm not sure about his viability in Commander but he fits the theme of the deck and he's cheap to cast so again it's worth a shot. I'm excited to get some games in with what feels like a new deck. I'll report back with some more updates before too long.

Update 09/11/2017: Just a quick update after playing a few games. Took out Angel of Serenity and Duplicant for Gonti, Lord of Luxury and Vizier of Many Faces. We'll see if I stick with these changes but they both fit better with the theme of the deck and provide nice value so I'm excited to find out.

Update 11/27/2017: Taking the inconsistent Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver out in favor of more draw in the form of Dig Through Time which also adds to the instant count for Torrential Gearhulk. Then I took out Evolving Wilds and a basic Swamp in favor of Vesuva and Academy Ruins. By removing the Wilds, the basic land was less necessary. I've always wanted these two lands so I'm eager to see how they both work. They're both a tad greedy but Vesuva gives the option to produce red and green while also letting me copy a Celestial Colonnade. Ruins is obviously great with Mindslaver but may not be worth the inability to produce colored mana (without Chromatic Lantern anyway).

Update 03/14/2018: Took out Vizier of Many Faces for my new foil Hostage Taker and I finally got another Council's Judgment to replace Mortify. That does reduce my instant count for Torrential Gearhulk but Judgment is strictly better removal. I might see about squeezing Utter End back in here at some point.
