Selvala, Sneak-A-Win

Commander / EDH

(updated with new cards 1.1.18)

This is my green/white tournament winning deck. Wait a second, did you just say in a competitive format dominated by blue/green, you have won with a green/white deck? heck yes.. inner monologue.

how do i do it with an elf?

let me tell ya. See this is no ordinary elf. This elf draws you cards, gains you life, and adds mana to your pool. So what's the downside? Well the elf also draws answers for your opponents, but if you (play your cards right) that won't matter.

This deck starts out of the gate fairly benign, as in if you are in a pod with a Zur, a Prosh, an Arcum, and a Selvala.. this general is not the one you counter, nor do you really care to kill because he also draws you cards! I've played in pods where other players protect this general, because.. this draws them cards.

So how do you win with the general who draws everyone answers? Lots of ways, for one realize you're not gonna be the main threat (at least not at first). So you don't have to worry about much more than sculpting your hand, holding on to instant answers to combo decks, and searching for your infinite handsize.

First find your infinite handsize effects, you're gonna need them and there's virtually no graveyard recursion, not to mention with your commander out if may only take a couple turns to have a handsize bigger than 7. Cards you're gonna be looking for at this point are:

  1. Reliquary Tower

  2. Thought Vessel

  3. Venser's Journal

  4. Anvil of Bogardan

With infinite handsize in place then you can begin to seek out your untap mechanics, untapping your commander is key, there are MANY, MANY ways to untap your commander in this deck, the best are:

  1. Paradox Engine (also a way to get "near" infinite mana)

  2. Umbral Mantle

  3. Seedborn Muse

  4. Quest for Renewal

  5. Awakening (wait a card that allows EVERYONE to untap, you must be crazy. Never underestimate the power of your opponents using their spells to counter board wipes and your other opponents win-cons. Not to mention now you have likely made a friend you can use politically.)

Now that you have gotten your 'machine going', start looking for answers to combo/control/counter players. There are many the best are:

  1. Aven Mindcensor

  2. Hushwing Gryff

  3. Curse of Exhaustion

  4. Teferi's Puzzle Box

all have effects that can stop a combo player from "going off" or can at least make them work harder.

When you are ready to win make sure you have one of the following cards in hand:

  1. Abeyance

  2. Silence

  3. Orim's Chant

any of these cards allows you to shut your opponents off when you're ready to win, or stop your opponents on their upkeep from going off during their turn (as well as white counter spells like mana tithe.. i mean who plays white counter?).

How Do I Win?

lots of ways. this deck seriously has lots of fun ways to win.

  1. "Death by a thousand cuts". this involves using cards like black vise, viseling, iron maiden, storm seeker to hurt your opponents when they draw or based on their hand size.

  2. "Shotgun to the face". if you have less than 60 life once this game gets going.. you're doing it wrong. Find ways to get insane life "vesner's journal" + "alhammarret's archive" = shit load of life, or "beacon of immortality" + "alhammarret's archive" = metric shit ton of life. Not to mention your commander's natural ability gains you life. so you're life will be high, which is why you won't mind pain land effects. Anyway load the shotgun "aetherflux reservoir" and just threaten anyone who gets in your way.

  3. "Angel Overrun". Simple enough, get out Angelic Accord and gain life by using your general, make angels, tap to win.

  4. "Squall Line". You won't get "infinite mana" but with cards like "Paradox Engine" and your general you can make A LOT of mana, float it into Squall Line and take out all your opponents at the same time. If you're playing the game right, your life will be higher than your opponents and you'll be fine.

  5. "I win". This is what the deck was created for, cards that literally say, "I win". there are 3 in this deck. "Felidar Sovereign", "Test of Endurance" and "Approach of the Second Sun". Just have your counters, silences and teferi's protections ready, because the whole table will try to remove these cards before your next upkeep, and the game is yours.

So that's the deck, i've had a lot of fun with it, no matter what you never get mana screwed, card advantage is never a problem, and more often than not you get to sit back and let your opponents deal with each other and when the time is right (and they have no responses) then you just lay down a win-con and say, "next game?".

nobody sees this coming in white/green.

enjoy.
