Updates (No HOU Changes yet) —July 22, 2017

Cuts:
Chrome Mox
Mox Diamond
Vitalize

Adds:
Mutagenic Growth
Vines of Vastwood
Paradox Engine

I haven't liked the moxen as much as I like the pump. Mutagenic growth is particularly good with the the 5 power creatures and Ravaging Riftwurm. Vines doubling as protection has been reasonably useful as well as random spicy plays with making an opponent's creature untargetable.

The Vitalize swap is just personal taste. Paradox is more fun for me, and I don't feel much difference between the two in terms of performance.

The 3 cards from HOU worth testing are Rhonas's Last Stand, Uncage the Menagerie, and Hashep Oasis. Here are my thoughts on them currently:
Hashep Oasis - Won't really do anything most of the game, but I think it is probably better than Nykthos.
Uncage the Menagerie - This seems pretty weak to me. It's a very expensive tutor. I'm not convinced it's better than anything currently in the deck, but it's a tutor and warrants testing. At a glance though, I think it is worse than Sylvan Tutor and Primal Command, both of which I think are solid.
Rhonas's Last Stand - I don't hate the card, but it's pretty risky and I don't think it is better than a pump spell.

can we get a section in the primer for Paradox Engine? I realize the current list doesn't even run it but it's a strong card that is confusing to use at first

Yeah there are a lot of neat tricks with Paradox Engine. I have it trading places in and out with Vitalize in my own list. I'll make an update later this week regarding Paradox Engine.

Sorry I forgot to ask, is Elvish Pioneer out for good? I never agreed with the change since it was a combo card that was actually decent outside of the combo, but if your sure it's staying out you need to fix some of the play lines (or at least add a note explaining that those particular play lines don't work in this particular build and give the reasons why it was cut.)

Pioneer is fine. There's room for tuning the list to personal taste, and I think pioneer is one of those choices. I like having the combo be made aware of but I'll update the primer to mention it's not in the current primer version.

yeah, sorry I meant to say that I have kept it in because of that rational and when I tried take it out I lost 2 games in a row because I thought that I still had it in there =P. I didn't mean that Pioneer needed to be put back in, just thought an explanation might help avoid confusion.

Have you thought about adding Elvish Visionary? I was playing a game with the list the other day and ran into a situation where i had infinite mana with Selvala and umbral mantle with a might of old krosa on her on turn 3...but...i was only able to cast duskwatch recruiter and get all the creatures into my hand...but nothing was able to draw me any more cards due to the board state and selvala getting impossibly large. Elvish visionary would give the sabertooth something to bounce and continue to draw your deck to assemble the wincon.

Pvtforlife, use temur sabertooth to bounce selvala, alternatively, Phyrexian Dreadnought is a sac outlet. This situation also frequently happens when you use Great Oak Guardian.

Pvtforlife says... #8

Dunadain lol...i am the biggest idiot...i never even thought of bouncing her...i guess i got it in my head she had to be there and be 1000000000/100000000000 or whatever she was at that point.

Also i am having a hard time getting memory jar...so i have been using Aetherflux Reservoir when i have infinite mana instead of the memory jar kill. This also gets past random graveyard hate.

March 3, 2017 5:54 p.m.

asm says... #9

You don't need memory jar or aetherflux reservoir to kill. You can loop great oak guardian with crossroads as plan A. If you don't have crossroads you can loop beast within and somberwald stag to destroy everyone's permanents and make infinite beasts for yourself and kill people on the next turn.

I'm waiting for the day when Paradox Engine gets added to the list.

I know we really don't have a way to tutor artifacts, but I was thinking, Benefactor's Draught on an Isochron Scepter might be fun.

March 9, 2017 2:29 p.m.

Dunadain says... #12

monogoodshit I think if you want to run paradox they say Vitalize ---> Paradox engine

trancer99 we don't really run ways to untap artifacts... what did you have in mind?

March 9, 2017 2:55 p.m.

asm says... #13

monogoodshit try it yourself. I've been going back and forth between paradox and vitalize in my own list. When paradox is good, its insane. But theres a lot of times where it's too expensive or too risky, and you just wanted a cheap untapper like vitalize.

March 9, 2017 2:56 p.m.

trancer99 says... #14

I guess without the Paradox Engine, scepter is not that good, maybe more of a Simic thing.

March 9, 2017 5:14 p.m.

monogoodshit says... #15

I have been using engine. It's amazing cast off of rishkars expertise

March 10, 2017 10:14 p.m.

monogoodshit says... #16

Also engine works great with dusk watch if you don't have infinite mana

March 10, 2017 10:15 p.m.

asm says... #17

Yes duskwatch recruiter combo is the main reason I like paradox engine.

While you have cut both, how would you compare Briarhorn vs Groundbreaker? I currently play only 2 colorless lands so the mana cost of Groundbreaker is usually fine, but is the advantage of Briarhorn being cheaper worth the drawback of only being able to use it while the ability is on the stack?

March 16, 2017 6:21 a.m.

asm says... #19

I prefer groundbreaker to briarhorn but prefer phytoburst to both. Sometimes you don't have 4 mana sources on t3, which makes groundbreaker awkward.

Briarhorn doesn't make enough mana like dreadnought to justify the evoke.

I am in love with every part of this deck and will be constructing my own based on this. Great job! also take Mox diamond out of your maybe board because you have it in your main board.

Does Gaea's Touch have a spot in this list over something like sol ring? Has it been given any testing? It may just be a preference change at best. I haven't gotten to test this deck yet. I was thinking a turn 1 mana dork into a turn 2 gaea's touch play 2 forests and then sac it, play sevala and have one mana up for something else like autumn's veil or nature's claim. It could also be pitched to chrome mox unlike sol ring

March 22, 2017 4:29 a.m.

asm says... #22

Sol ring enables a turn 2 selvala. Gaea's touch does not.

March 22, 2017 10:29 a.m.

Dunadain says... #23

how much testing have Instill Energy and Nature's Chosen received? they seem good both as a combo and as untappers

March 22, 2017 3:18 p.m.

asm says... #24

Dunadain They were in the original list but have since been swapped out for vitalize. tw0handt0uch still likes them for the combo with cloudstone curio.

March 22, 2017 3:35 p.m.

tlwdssd says... #25

Turn 1 forest > turn 2 forest > Gaea's Touch > another forest > sacrifice gaea's touch for 2 green mana and tap other forest > selvala.
