Ever since it was spoiled, I have loved Solemnity for a number of reasons, most notably for its interaction and lock with Phyrexian Unlife. I've seen a lot of experimentation with making this competitive in modern, usually in Esper to take advantage of Zur the Enchanter. I feel that it really has a home in Selesnya, however, given its wonderful interaction with undying and creatures. If any creature with these abilities is on the battlefield without counters when Solemnity hits the table, they are basically unkillable without an exile clause.

As a consequence, this deck attempts to achieve two things in the fastest manner possible.

  1. Get the lock of Solemnity and Nine Lives - new update! - set up as fast as possible through tutors such as Commune with the Gods and Idyllic Tutor, with Birds of Paradise and Noble Hierarch to provide some ramp.

  2. Combo off with any undying creature, Solemnity and Blasting Station or Altar of Dementia which will hit in for infinite damage as the creature is sacrificed and returned or deck the opponent Ad Nauseam. Bonus points if this creature is Kitchen Finks who provides infinite life to add salt to the wound.

Greater Auramancy will provide just a little more protection against enchantment hate, and can be tutored up easily.

This deck can make a turn three kill with

Turn 1: land, Birds of Paradise

Turn 2: Land, Solemnity

Turn 3: land, Altar of Dementia, Young Wolf.

Combo off for the win.

I have found this deck to so far be very resilient against the current modern format. Main deck Kitchen Finks is a nightmare against burn and the combo ends the game completely. Control hates creatures that keep coming back, and the Luminarch Ascension and Choke in the sideboard makes them cry. Damping Sphere is not fun for Tron. Solemnity on its own shuts down Aether Vial, Chalice of the Void, Engineered Explosives, Ratchet Bomb, Walking Ballista, Spike Feeder, and Oblivion Stone.

Give it a whirl and see how you go!
