Scouting the next hill - WUBRG Landfall

Commander / EDH Five Color Lands

Landfall. I have been trying to build a landfall deck for years. Every time I build a landfall deck, it turns into something else.

This new build is 5 color to allow us to take advantage of the great black landfall options in addition to other great black options like The Gitrog Monster , by changing our commander to the new Golos, Tireless Pilgrim . Most other builds for Golos are expensive good stuff decks. Our approach will take advantage of extra land drops and from multiple sources so when we activate Golos we can hit value engines or extra lands.

Golos becomes an all star because he:

  1. Fixes our mana if needed
  2. Can draw one of our Landfall Engines: Field of the Dead
  3. Has an activated ability that says "Play our Strat"

Because we want to landfall this deck has every extra land drop method reasonably possible. This means that we can play more lands, and Golos activations will either hit value cards or lands that trigger our value engines.

"2WUBRG Exile the top three cards of your library. You may play them this turn without paying their mana cost." in most Golos builds is all about hoping for expensive cards, for us it turns into "pay 7, "Play 3 cards from your deck" because hitting lands means playing more lands! This could mean we "wiff" and pay 7 for 7 land drops, but seriously, that means we are doing Harmonize into 3x Rampant Growth for 7 mana, in a deck where each of those is likely triggering Rampaging Baloths and building us a horde of creatures.

This deck isn't combo, but it is high synergy with multiple value engines.

My prior build for this deck was with Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis . Kyanaios, seemed the perfect balance of card draw and land drop on a general that (hopefully) won't draw too much hate. It resulted in an awesome 4 color landfall deck.

Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis met 2 needs for the landfall deck, consistent land ramp and card draw acceleration. I didn't even care that it is a symmetrical effect.

If you are curious these are what two of my prior landfall deck attempts turned into. Other attempts I just ended up dismantling, but Azusa morphed into something else and Adun, well he just never made it off the ground. (note that neither of them are landfall anymore):

  1. Azusa
  2. Landfall, Mina and Denn

After trying those decks, in rapid succession, I scrapped those decks and built a three color landfall deck that focus's on recursion effects and taking advantage of cards like The Gitrog Monster to really get into the landfall shenanigans.

In the end none of these decks had all the landfall cards I wanted in a single deck. Yes, it would be better to build multiple land matters decks with different landfall mechanical focuses. However, I want 1 awesome does all the things I want deck. Thus the constant game of chase.

  1. Play a "Landfall Engine"
  2. Play lands
  3. Draw cards
  4. Play more engines and more lands
  5. leverage the graveyard

Cards that let us replay the same lands:

Several effects cause our lands to come into play tapped (including the fact that shocks without paying the life and bounce lands come in tapped). To combat this, the deck runs Amulet of Vigor

We have many cards that give us extra land drops, these are the stars:

  1. Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis
  2. Azusa, Lost but Seeking
  3. Exploration
  4. Mina and Denn, Wildborn
  5. Oracle of Mul Daya
  6. Storm Cauldron

Because of all this extra land dropping, we need extra card draw to keep cards in hand and we need extra lands in the deck to keep things running.

Currently I am running 44 lands, but that might need to cut down a bit in favor of more card draw effects.

Several of our best Landfall abilities create creatures. We also run two landfall dammage opponents effects to try and drive home victory.

The OCD in me drives me to desire all 10 duals, all 10 shocks and all 10 fetches as the mana base for this deck. However, I don't have these original duals:

  1. Tropical Island
  2. Volcanic Island
  3. Underground Sea

For the time being, although I could replace 1 Underground Sea with 1 Fetid Pools or something similar, I instead am accepting that I don't need the extra black source, or red source as it relates to Volcanic Island . After all I don't need 60 lands, 44 or 45 should do nicely in this land focused deck. (Strategically more than a 35-38 that a typical EDH deck would run due to the focus on land drops, and corresponding ramp/draw mechanics.

Due to color balance/ cards in the deck, I don't actually need as many red, white or black mana sources, so I am not running these shocks due to color balance:

  1. Blood Crypt
  2. Godless Shrine
  3. Sacred Foundry

I still run 1 basic of each type because sometimes Blood Moon is in the meta I play in.
