Post:BFZ and a little side note! —Jan. 3, 2016

Sorry for the lack of responses, everyone! Life has really been kicking me in the butt lately, with the new job and all.

Anyways, Post:BFZ is very short. Basically,

In: Bring to Light

Out: Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

Maybe: Scour from Existence

In: Bring to Light is too awesome of a card to not include. The only instant/sorcery it misses in the deck is Merciless Eviction, but everything else in the deck is fair game.

Out: Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is a great card, and it added flavor to the deck, but I found myself rarely ever using it. At mana cost, it's a bit difficult to cast while keeping Scion usable during my opponents' turns.

Maybe: Scour from Existence is a card that deserves consideration. At instant speed, it's a beast. However, it runs into the same curse as Ugin at mana cost.

I don't understand the first two attack combos mentioned in the description. Can you explain how to do them please?

Use the stack, Luke

Killer dragon first with scion ability, then pump dragon. Pump dragon resolves -- pump scion. Then killer dragon resolves. Now scion is a killer dragon that is pumped.

Just came back from a Commander-night in multiplayer and I must say that your deck is amazing !

It puts enough pressure on the oponents early game to put them out of tempo (forcing them to answer Scion instead of developping their board) and when Scion is finally taken down you usually have 1-2 more big fat dragons in your hand along with reanimate spells to swarm the board with massive fire-breathing monsters.

It's just priceless to see everyone gang-up against you to kill your dragons ! xD

Squirrel_of_War: Here's an explanation that hopefully makes sense:

If you put Scion's ability on the stack twice, BEFORE letting one instance resolve, Scion will be forced to cycle through each transformation. Because the stack resolves "First in, last out," the first activation will search out Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon and the second will find Moltensteel Dragon. While Moltensteel Dragon is on the stack, pump Scion of the Ur-Dragon using for +6/+0. After allowing Moltensteel Dragon's activation to resolve, Scion of the Ur-Dragon is now a copy of Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon, along with the +6/+0 from Moltensteel Dragon. This gives you a 10/4 flying death machine.

Please note that for this to work, the opponent needs to have not blocked Scion of the Ur-Dragon. If the opponent does block, Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon can be substituted with Dragon Tyrant. Simply add enough for the swing to be lethal.

And in case you're wondering, yes, Scion of the Ur-Dragon does lose his ability to transform after the first resolution of his ability. However, due to the stack, Scion will still be forced to go through the second transformation, as the stack has yet to resolve.

Hope this explains everything okay. I know it's a bit long, but I just wanted to be thorough.

So... this came up:

Scion on board and I cast Dack's Duplicate targetting Scion.

In response I pay 2 and activate the morph ability.

How does it work out ?

A) Duplicate becomes a Scion

B) Duplicate becomes the new dragon (the morph)

C) Duplicate fizzles

Dack's Duplicate will enter as a copy of the new dragon. Why? The Duplicate will only check for the identity of the card right As the ability resolves when it enters the battlefield and rule 706.1 states: The copiable values are the values derived from the text printed on the object (that text being name, mana cost, color indicator, card type, subtype, supertype, rules text, power, toughness, and/or loyalty) Scion would already have become a complete copy of the new dragon (Scion can no longer even use his cloning ability until the clone wears off since there isn't a clause that states he retains it like Lazav, Dimir Mastermind has) and the Duplicate would only see the values of the new dragon on the card when it enters.

You should consider Hellkite Charger as well. While it doesn't go infinite with Savage Ventmaw like Aggravated Assault, it is basically just firebreathing attack phases. Also, since it is a dragon as well then it can combo as soon as either Hellkite Charger or Savage Ventmaw is in play (or just fetch them and resurrect them to get it sooner).

These next few suggestions are more of the angle of graveyard recursion. It seems from your current deck design that this isn't a heavy element although the applications go beyond just that, so I figure they're worth mentioning as food for thought.

Another consideration can be Hypersonic Dragon. This dragon is easily playable if ever drawn and you can change your commander into it at the end of your opponent's turn right before yours to be able to play a sorcery. Very handy when you want to resurrect something and don't have a haste enabler. This way what you resurrect isn't sitting in play for the full go around before it attacks and your opponents have an opportunity to remove it.

Spellbound Dragon I find useful for when I want turn Scion into it and pitch a dragon out of my hand (so it can be resurrected).

Dragonlord Dromoka - Is more for a protection move to avoid counterspells. You can set up your graveyard for a mass resurrection and if you believe someone is holding up counter magic to stop you, then turn the commander into Dragonlord Dromoka just before. Graveyard decks in general tend to choreograph their intentions which usually makes them vulnerable to counter magic

I tend to lean on very cheap and efficient resurrection spells and then from there just the mass resurrection spells. Such as - Living Death - Patriarch's Bidding - Twilight's Call


Now I know it can be difficult to find the right cuts to make room for new changes. Each person has their own strategy and ideas of when to use certain cards but sometimes just hearing a second opinion is nice just to reevaluate some cards (I have a friend who I run stuff by and he will challenge me with justifying cards. It helps me shrug). So here's the suggestions that you may reconsider:

Putrid Imp - This little guy is nice when you happen to have him, Animate Dead, and a dragon for first turn. Very satisfying to see your opponent's faces when you plop out a dragon on turn 2. Although it turns into more of a novelty when it takes such specific cards to pull off, and drawing into Putrid Imp later in the game is less impressive.

Karn Liberated and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon - don't have any particular synergy with what the deck is already doing. Although they are powerful and fun they are also high casting cost cards and the deck already has plenty of that going on. That being said, Jace, the Mind Sculptor is a great include since his 0 ability can shuffle dragons that are in your hand back into your library so that they can be used by Scion.

Breath of Life - Is a vanilla resurrection. I'd change this to be either a mass resurrect or a cheaper version like Necromancy (Also goes infinite with Worldgorger Dragon in the same way that Animate Dead does so it increases probability of getting that combo).

Vindicate - I'd swap this out with Maelstrom Pulse although this depends on your meta. Vindicate is better for if you have to deal with particular lands that give you trouble whereas Maelstrom Pulse is great for token hate.

Quicksilver Dragon - The issue I found with Quicksilver Dragon is that most single target removal used in commander is instant speed. Good players will tend to let you swing with your commander and hit you after you've changed (mostly due to if it's a multiplayer they're okay with you swinging if you're hitting one of their opponents but as soon as you swing at them they take out Scion). Then the sorcery speed removal all tends to be mass removal that doesn't target or it's Decimate which selects multiple targets so Quicksilver Dragon's ability doesn't work. You might consider cutting your hexproof dragons for the same reason. All depends on your meta and how much they keep your commander on board.

Charge: Wow, thanks for the in depth analysis!

Hellkite Charger is an old friend that is dear to my heart, but unfortunately has been retired from the deck. He's just too inefficient, even when used in combination with Bear Umbra.

I do like the idea of Hypersonic Dragon. Being able to cast any sorcery, not just reanimation spells is fun. I'll give it some thought.

Dragonlord Dromoka is a fun idea I might try out. I like the idea of not having anyone cast spells on my turn.

However, Spellbound Dragon, Living Death, Patriarch's Bidding, and Twilight's Call will not be considered for inclusion. Spellbound Dragon is too situational, in my opinion. I highly dislike the other three spells for one reason: I do not like my opponents reanimating anything off my spells. Playing in a highly competitive environment, your opponent reanimating anything can spell certain doom.

Worldgorger Dragon + Animate Dead gives you infintie mana.

You pitch the Worldgorger Dragon (put it in the graveyard for those not down with the lingo) and then play Animate Dead Targetting the dragon. Animate Dead brings the dragon into play, triggering it's ETB ability. This exiles all permanents, including Animate Dead. Animate Dead's Leave the battlefield trigger resolves, putting Worldgorger Dragon in the graveyard. This then returns all permanents, including Animate Dead. This loop can then be recurred infinitely. In each loop, all lands / mana rocks are being bounced, meaning that they can tap for mana between each loop. This net gains you infinite mana which you can then spend on Shivan Hellkite's ability to ping people to death. To break the infinite mana loop, you jusy have to target a different creature in a graveyard. However, once you have net gained enough mana for the kill, in response to one of the loops you can put a bunch of ping triggers on the stack and let them resolve before the loop continues, killing everybody.

I'm curious about your lack of the green ramp spells. Cultivate Kodama's Reach

Do you find the 10 signets make up for that? How important to you is getting scion out before turn 5?

Do you like Thran Dynamo or Gilded Lotus?

Both Cultivate and Kodama's Reach require the use of basic lands, which this deck lacks.

Yes, the signets are my form of ramp in the deck. Being able to ramp with colorless mana and still receive colored mana from it is amazing. Getting Scion of the Ur-Dragon by turn 3-4 is a MUST! You need to establish board position as soon as possible in this deck.

Thran Dynamo and Gilded Lotus are both excellent cards! Still trying to make space for them, but so far, no luck.

I also have a scion deck that leans more towards the dragon tribal aspect of deck building (it runs 28 creatures) . It's heavy with reanimation as well.

I am thinking about moving over to a more combo centric deck. It is of course a 5 colour deck. What I like about your combo choices is, they are still dragons!

What do you think of the popular Hermit Druid "combo"?

Having a deck with no basics, does red land hate ever shut your deck down? Cards like Blood Moon or Ruination

We can't build a deck for every situation in a format like commander of course. I can see how versitile the signets can be though.

I love my Scion of the Ur-Dragon deck. I wanted to make it Dragon tribal, but it was too slow to be effective. So I decided to go with Dragon based combos instead.

Hermit Druid is a powerful deck. I have my own deck and it's amazing. However, I decided to keep my Hermit Druid deck separate from my Scion of the Ur-Dragon deck simply because Hermit Druid doesn't fit in a Dragon themed deck. If you wanted to make a Hermit Druid deck, go check out Epochalyptik's deck 0% Basic. It's what I based mine on.

My answer to Blood Moon is my 10 signets. My lands can all be mountains, but my Signets will still give me the colors I need. My girlfriend likes to use Armageddon a lot whenever we play. I'm pretty sure I can survive a Ruination haha.

Hey. Sorry to flood the comments with my ramblings. But Last night before a game of edh I went out and picked up a few of the combo pieces you play with in the deck.

Wow! I had a lot of fun. Combo dragons, I wish I knew sooner.

Let me described my board state. I had Temur Ascendancy and Aggravated Assault in play. Along with scion and a reanimated Utvara Hellkite.

Things quickly got out of hand! That was a fast game.

Hello first and foremost I like the deck, I have no idea how many comment dumps have been done, but one of my favorite cards in my ur-dragon tribal deck is Reito Lantern so I can keep using specific dragons abilities through out the game.

You REALLY should add Dack's Duplicate in this deck...

It has synergy with the scalelord, but it's also ANY creature on the battlefield WITH HASTE !! for !!

I won a lot of Multiplayer games by copying the broken creatures on the battlefield (who said Avacyn, Angel of Hope ???). Or just by copying my other Dragons.

This card is sooo broken is so many ways...

Reito Lantern is an okay card. Sometimes, I'd rather keep my Dragons in the graveyard. Reito Lantern is one of those decent cards that I can't seem to make space for. Who knows? Maybe it'll be in sometime in the future.
