Maybeboard

"We were king's men, knights, and heroes... but some knights are dark and full of terror, my lady. War makes monsters of us all."

  • Thoros of Myr

Saskia the Unyielding is great for getting in a ton of damage, being able to work around a players with a hard-to-attack board-state or doubling down on one troublesome opponent. Great for the guerrilla warfare that this deck is aiming to accomplish.

The human tribel aspect of the deck is largely in for flavor reasons and a personal preferences for making decks with a strong theme.

The main strategy is to get out creatures on the board rapidly and once there is a strategic opening lay down an Ambush or swing with Odric, Master Tactician to open up the field.

Angel of Glory's Rise also provides a way to get out an explosive play and will often close the game if you have Samut, Voice of Dissent or Garna, the Bloodflame on field or in the graveyard.

As a build for the multiplayer format politics is an integral part of your game plan. Having allies against strong opponents is always nice, and because of the lack of defensive strategies you should avoid taking the heat of the table at all costs.

This deck has a few ways it sets up a favorable political situation:

  • Hold back from committing to the board and have other players take the heat while you seemingly are a non-threatening ally for your opponents. When the opportunity arises you can drop down value onto the board while your opponents are in a weak state (usually after a board wipe).

  • Saskia’s ability has a lot of political advantages. When entering the battlefield you give a clear signal to your opponents as to who you consider the biggest threat and who you consider “allies”. This often sets up some cool situations where you can have your opponents opening up one players board for you with removal, or even have some players take damage themselves just to also have that damage dealt to an opponent.

  • The explosivity of the deck is also quite important when it comes to dealing with some of the fast combo decks out there. Usually these decks will play what is ultimately a game of archenemy drawing aggression from all opponents. This is the only case where you gain political and strategical capital by committing a large amount of cards to the board.

Conversely there are political mis-steps you want to avoid:

  • Playing creatures out on curve seems like it is the best way to accomplish a quick and easy victory, but in multiplayer it is not. The share amount of board wipes and creature hate in this format makes it problematic as a strategy. Also being the first one to stick your head forward is the easiest way to get a target painted on it.

  • Playing Saskia for incidental value is also a terrible political move. This is causing you not only to bump your commander up in price for the next time you cast her with a more clear plan in mind but it also makes an enemy of somebody that could be your ally.

  • Using removal at end-step for value. This is generally not a great idea for the same reason that casting Saskia is not a great idea. it will garner you enemies and will remove a card that is an integral for the defensive plan of the deck.

Currently being developed

A company of battle-hardened human brigands and mercenaries.

Each corps is named after the card that best symbolizes the purpose.

The Recruiters: Find and bring other humans to our hand or battlefield.

Imperial Recruiter, Yisan Chord, Ranger of Eos, Thalia's Lancers.

The Lieutenants: Make the board bigger and/or themselves bigger.

Thalia's Lieutenant, Juniper Order Ranger, Champion of the Parish, Warden of the First Tree.

The Trackers: Make clues, explore, recur and draw cards from being on the board.

Tireless Tracker, Deadeye Tracker, Grim Haruspex, Thraben Inspector, Mentor of the Meek, Duskwatch Recruiter  , Queen Marchesa, Eternal Witness, Den Protector.

The Tacticians: Manipulate the board and combat in our favor.

Odric, Master Tactician, Alesha, Who Smiles at Death, Combat Celebrant, Heron's Grace Champion, Samut, Voice of Dissent, Garna, the Bloodflame, Thalia, Heretic Cathar, Loyal Sentry.

The Garrisons: Make multiple bodies.

Hanweir Garrison, Hanweir Militia Captain  , Dragonmaster Outcast.

The Pilgrims: Ramp our board.

Avacyn's Pilgrim, Azusa, Lost but Seeking.

Cards that open up the board for a lethal assault or getting all creatures out for our graveyard. Playing these cards are the way the deck wins games.

Order // Chaos, Naya Charm, In Garruk's Wake, Roar of Challenge are all ways to make an opponent's field irrelevant and get in for a lethal assault.

Disrupt Decorum allows you to attack with little chance of backlash and force your opponents to attack each other setting up the field for your next attack. Great offensive and defensive card.

Angel of Glory's Rise if a game has gone on long enough this card will win you the game more often than not, though this does require a haste enabler.

Supporting spells and enchantments.

Supporting artifacts and equipment.

Removal package.

Mana rocks and ramp spells.

Suggestions wanted!

I find that the current edition is lacking in card draw, also any ways to blink creatures repeatedly and more ways enable haste.
