Saheeli & Her Pet Eldrazi

Battle cruiser style EDH deck led by Saheeli. Drop some artifacts, then drop some bombs. Everyone wins. Well... just you win.

I love the Izzet guild colors, always have. Blue for control and red for chaos just makes me happy. I have tried most of the Izzet commanders available and have found most to either too one-dimensional (Locust God, Niv-Mizzets, new Jhoira) or lacking the oomph I was looking for (Keranos, Jori En). If you dig some of those other commanders, awesome! But this deck is about playing degenerate artifact ramp then dropping gigantic monsters from the sky, and no one puts that together like Saheeli, the Gifted does.

This deck is not "optimized." The goal of this deck is to play (what I consider to be) fun, huge, splashy cards. I have a few pet cards along the way as well.

This is not your typical blue deck where you play on other peoples turns. Nor is it subtle. Being that Saheeli is a plainswalker, you must activate her ability during your turn. A main phase Cyclonic Rift is quite typical for this deck.

The strategy is really pretty simple. Play some rocks, ramp out Saheeli, and then drop some bombs. Saheeli is quite good at protecting herself. Due to the fact that she starts at 5 loyalty, makes chump blockers, and both her relevant abilities are +1's, it is usually very easy to get her to stick in the first 3-4 turns of the game. Once she is down, you are off to the races.

With the massive amounts of mana generation and cost reduction at your disposal, it is quite typical to be able to play a huge bomb and then drop a 5 mana extra turn spell as well. This is generally the play pattern I am looking for to lock in the win.

Ok, not really a "combo" but if Mycosynth Lattice is on board, you can hard lock the table by dropping our good friend Karn, the Great Creator . Alternatively, just overload a Vandalblast which makes scooping take on a whole new meaning.

This is the only non-combat related win-con in the deck. Its certainly not my go-to plan, but all of those cards are so good in their own right it would seem down right irresponsible for us to not play them.

This deck plays lots of cheap artifacts and a few huge threats. In general everyone will see you and your Blightsteel coming from a mile away. We are packing a small countermagic suite and a few other utility cards to help us out, but overall when the table gangs up on you (and they will) you will have a tough time fending them off.

The key to victory is to out value the table through draw. It is really easy to gas yourself out and put yourself into top deck mode. Having one of your reload spells (like Finale of Revelation ) get countered can be a total blow out. Always prioritize card advantage above all else!

Card Choices

I probably dont have too much explaining to do here... With Saheeli on board, each of these reduce your next spell by 1, making the zero and one drops EVEN MORE BROKEN than usual. This is the key to an explosive start, and you should typically reject an opening hand that does not facilitate a turn 3 or sooner Saheeli.
Saheeli and her cost reduction lets us put some silly cards in our removal category
I don't think I would be physically capable of building a blue deck without including some counter magic. We run a small suite here of the most efficiently costed spells, since in this deck we really don't want to hold up mana unnecessarily. Do NOT use these precious gems unless you absolutely have to! They are here to prevent game winning plays by your opponents, or protect your most valuable assets.
See Combo section above. If all else fails, this is a solid way to end a game regardless of the board state
This is the most important part of the deck. Mana generation is not an issue, but gassing yourself out is a real problem. Prioritize getting these spells through to make sure you can keep the punches coming.
Izzet doesn't have the best tutoring options. Primary artifact targets include specific hate pieces, like a Cursed Totem , Memory Jar if you need the card draw, or Mycosynth Lattice to lock it up.
None of these pieces hurt us nearly as bad as they do the rest of the table. These silver bullets are your best answers to combo decks and the like. And obviously the artifacts have real synergy with Saheeli, almost doubling as mana rocks.
  • Grafdigger's Cage : Just dont try to transmute in a Blightsteel, and it turns off your Finale of Promise
  • Cursed Totem : Turns off Metal Worker, but otherwise gravy
  • Torpor Orb : No ETBs for us. Eldrazi are all cast triggers
  • Winter Orb : Let's all slow down and think about what we are doing here
  • Blood Moon : Easy addition, barely impacts us, and can totally wreck the competition
  • Sunder : Where we are going, we dont need lands. Drop a bomb (or 2 or 3) and follow up with this for the win
It is almost never wrong to play one of these. At the low end, its play a land, draw a card, and go again. At the top end it means a "hasting" blightsteel.
The land base has NOT been optimized. You can surely do much better, but the mass of basics make Blood Moon go down smooth

Budget Options

Some of the cards in this deck are EXPENSIVE! but lets be real, this deck is not for competitive environments and you can tune it up and down to your liking and still have a great time. Here are some suggestions (in no particular order) for cheaper cards that will still get it done, and as always, check out EDHREC.com for a list of all the popular choices

Rocks

Beaters

Utility / Draw

Here are the cards that are more than $10 we really don't want to live without. If you want to up the power level of your deck, go for these first.
