pie chart Sacrificial Humans [Dark Ascension]

Gearing up for Dark Ascension!

This deck mainly started once I saw the Ravenous Demon  Flip.

1/25 Update:

Wow. Thanks for all the comments and critiques, people!

This deck has come a good ways since its inception, and I am very excited to make them come DA release.

Currently working on making sure I have a sustainable amount of humans to continually sacrifice/tap for my Demons and Priests.

Removal is also an issue that I'm looking to deal with.

Strangelove says... #1

I think Seance because you can use it with Doomed Traveler to create shit tons of fuel to sacrifice.

And why no Champion of the Parish ? Crazy card with the human tokens.

Unruly Mob is another good one and Mausoleum Guard is a more cost effective version of Doomed Traveler (crazy with revival, etc).

Slayer of the Wicked is going to be essential in DKA meta, you should add a bunch to the sideboard.

Soviett says... #4

Thanks for the +1!

Slayer of the Wicked is awesome, thanks for reminding me that he exists!

I liked Unruly mob, but to me it was between either that or Village Cannibals -- and with the Cannibals counting for both sides I felt I'd rather have them instead.

parasitian says... #5

This is pretty cool +1, and also @Strangelove, Penumbra's deck glitched I think, and he couldn't add the demon

January 14, 2012 12:43 p.m.

Swift123 says... #6

I would take out Seance . It sounds good at first, but it is only good if you have the demon for sacrifice or a doomed traveler for a single 1/1 flyer remember the flyer tolken it spawns is not human so it cannot be sacrificed and both the tolkens and creatures in the graveyard get exiled. I would however put it increasing devotion for the five 1/1s and thraben doomslayer for the tap for a 1/1 human. I forsee alot of people making decks like this then getting black sun zenithed for 1 or 2 and loosing all of their humans. Then dying to their own demon. just another reason to keep increasing devotion because of flashback.

January 14, 2012 6:07 p.m.

Swift123 says... #7

+1 for the idea though! i would like to see a deck like this work. I def think thraben doomslayer is a better 3 drop then village canibals

January 14, 2012 6:08 p.m.

parasitian says... #8

I was kinda thinking the same thing about card:Altar's Reap? ) then it kinda should get taken out

January 14, 2012 7:09 p.m.

Strangelove says... #9

Doesn't Seance basically garuntee that you won't lose to a card:Black Sun's Zenith? Maybe it's a sideboard card.

January 14, 2012 8:58 p.m.

Soviett says... #10

Thanks for the +1's!

After looking at it I do prefer the Thraben Doomsayer and Increased Devotion over my Village Cannibals and card:Altar's Reap but I'm just not sure.

January 14, 2012 9:50 p.m.

Personal Sanctuary . Nothing sucks more than having to tap your demon because you somehow ran out of sac fuel

January 15, 2012 1:46 p.m.

elbenji says... #12

Hmm if you could work her in, Falkenrath Aristocrat? Also Sorin might be helpful

January 15, 2012 3:59 p.m.

Soviett says... #13

Sorin is a beast, however he doesn't really fit with my theme. On top of that, he doesnt really benefit me in anyway.

With the Aristocrat I just didn't want to splash red, but I did look at her originally. Good call.

January 15, 2012 9:29 p.m.

skullcandy110 says... #14

Did you consider throwing in Unruly Mob or Village Cannibals ... Maybe even Tezzeret's Gambit for the proliferate

January 16, 2012 1:05 p.m.

Soviett says... #15

Originally I had the Cannibals in, however I replaced that 3-drop slot with the Doomsayers.

January 16, 2012 10:26 p.m.

Hadarace says... #16

Looks pretty good. Kinda like my Morbid deck (check it out and tell me what you think please!) except pretty much the opposite on the color wheel. I'm thinking about combining it with my Humans deck (look at this one too) once Dark Ascension hits, but I haven't thought about who will be cut/added to merge them into one.

If you look at either deck and comment, leave a link to one of your decks and I'll return the favor!

Oh yea, +1.

there's a combo coming up between a couple of Doomed TravelerMTG Card: Doomed Travelers and a white card with a "sacrifice a human" trigger, sort of "infinite spirit combo"mark my words

January 20, 2012 11:07 p.m.

This is more of a minor nitpick, but why no Timely Reinforcements? Granted, you're probably going to be pumping out a lot of tokens, but it's still a nice little "just-in-case" card.

L4ND0K says... #21

Hey Nice Deck.

About to get full penetration or simply just to remove an annoying effect creature. Finally, in case of emergency, it can even remove the if you run out of sac fuel. It's a 3 mana cost card like timely reinforcements with both the effect of a creature and a instant/sorcery card with a many more options for you to play it out!

January 25, 2012 2:40 p.m.

Strangelove says... #22

Requiem AngelMTG Card: Requiem Angel would work with this theme too.

January 25, 2012 3:42 p.m.

cmarkovirtue says... #23

I would remove , you won't take any damage.

Otherwise, nice deck.

January 25, 2012 8:37 p.m.

I don't like Altar's ReapMTG Card: Altar's Reap just because you don't want to waste a 1 drop blocker to draw two cards/you are already sacing a bunch of creatures... I would run 2 Tragic SlipMTG Card: Tragic Slips or a mainboard a Black Sun's ZenithMTG Card: Black Sun's Zenith over it. Possibly a gytaxian probe. Also Timely ReinforcementsMTG Card: Timely Reinforcements doesn't work with this deck, because they are solider tokens. Cool deck though :)

January 25, 2012 9:17 p.m.

parasitian says... #25

take out Altar's ReapMTG Card: Altar's Reap and Timely ReinforcementsMTG Card: Timely Reinforcements for another Gather the TownsfolkMTG Card: Gather the Townsfolk, another [[thraben doomsayer and 2 [[increasing devotion

This looks quite good! I'm currently running a WW Humans deck, and once DKA hits, I think I'll follow this deck as a general guide for converting it... I like how it still takes full advantage of the Humans tribal (essentially just Champion of the ParishMTG Card: Champion of the Parish) while also taking advantage of the human sacrifice mechanic. My only concern is that, especially with the appearance of Sorin, the B/W Sacrifice deck will be very popular, and therefore any spells that can be easily used against it will also be very popular.

You mentioned that you're still looking for removal... White and Black actually have a lot of removal spells, between Go for the ThroatMTG Card: Go for the Throat, Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring, Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter (he is amazing in my WW Humans deck, but because he may be sacrificed, I think that O-rings would be much more useful here), Doom BladeMTG Card: Doom Blade, and the psudo-removal PacifismMTG Card: Pacifism.

January 25, 2012 11:49 p.m.

Soviett says... #28

Hey Cthompson thanks for checking my deck out!

I've got 4 black removal spells (6 if you inclue the two Skirsdag FlayerMTG Card: Skirsdag Flayer. I run 3 Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring as it is, however since I just put in Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter I wonder if I should -1 Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring for something else.

Something a lot of people have said already, but I noticed you haven't adressed is the personal sanctuary. I know, I thought it would be fairly useless when I got it at first too, but to keep your life total from becoming fatal way too quickly, it would be a useful one or two of if u start finding that you have that scenario happening too often!

January 26, 2012 10 p.m.

cthompsonguy says... #30

I've been discussing this with some other Magic players today, especially the Sanctuary part... Somebody pointed out that if you get to a point where you only have the Archdemon and no humans, you're doing something wrong... Sanctuary should not be necessary.

Something else... You have no life gain cards, which you should have in your sideboard at least, in case you're against a red direct-damage deck. My thought was Disciple of GriselbrandMTG Card: Disciple of Griselbrand. Not only is that life gain. but if you get to a point where you have to either sac Disciple or take the Archdemon's damage, and you don't think you'll be able to sac another human next turn, you can use Disciple's ability to sac the Archdemon before it deals its damage, so you GAIN 9 life instead of losing 9 life...

January 27, 2012 12:01 a.m.

parasitian says... #31

I think you should have 4 demons and the Disciple of GriselbrandMTG Card: Disciple of Griselbrand seems good too, but I dont know wut u shood take out

January 27, 2012 12:50 a.m.

cthompsonguy says... #32

Parasitian - I disagree with the idea of 4 demons... I don't want a 5-CMC card in my opening hand. 3-of should be enough to get him early enough, especially if you throw in some card draws like Mentor of the MeekMTG Card: Mentor of the Meek

wow how do you get such a big score and so many people to see this deck i have almost this identical deck posted on here for about a week now. I also was using suicidal humans before anything was even released from DKA. just wondering. lol...good deck +1 cuz its almost exactly like mine lol.

January 27, 2012 9:16 a.m.

Soviett says... #35

C I totally agree with you about the Life-Gain part. is sick, but my deck isn't based upon him. I can utitlize other cards like Champion of the ParishMTG Card: Champion of the Parish or Skirsdag High PriestMTG Card: Skirsdag High Priest instead if I don't see a demon. I like the versitility, tbh.

January 27, 2012 3:43 p.m.

cthompsonguy says... #36

Vault's effect is just too expensive... True, deathtouch on your army of 1/1 tokens is fun, and lifelink on a 9/9 flyer is pretty, but 4 mana every turn? No thank you.

January 27, 2012 3:52 p.m.

Soviett says... #37

Well I look at it as using it to buy an extra turn. Gain enough life to sustain another volley from my opponent and then try again.

But yes, 4 freaking sucks to pay.

January 27, 2012 3:59 p.m.

cthompsonguy says... #38

My solution was to sideboard 4 Disciple of GriselbrandMTG Card: Disciple of Griselbrand for when I'm matched against a direct-damage deck. My only concern is that the deck doesn't have much high-toughness creatures to sac. BUT, Skirsdag High PriestMTG Card: Skirsdag High Priest's 5/5 demons are good targets. My only concern is that he needs to tap 3 creatures to do it... Which is not a good idea to do on your own turn because you risk leaving yourself without blockers.

January 27, 2012 4:07 p.m.

Soviett says... #39

Well with my mana-base I should be able to pump out an effective amount of humans each turn. Plus, I plan on saving Gather the TownsfolkMTG Card: Gather the Townsfolk for just such an occurance.

January 27, 2012 4:20 p.m.

cthompsonguy says... #40

What's your thoughts on Increasing DevotionMTG Card: Increasing Devotion? The mana cost scares me, but when you consider just how much it does, it's still pretty efficient. With Gather, there's only so many of them in your deck. With Devotion, it spits out a larger group than Gather, AND you can flash it back to suddenly have an army on your field. I'm still not sold on it though. If you get your demon transformed and swinging on turn 6, the game should be over before you ever have a chance to flash it back. Especially considering the speed of just the humans portion, even if you never see the Archdemon.

January 27, 2012 5:04 p.m.

Strangelove says... #41

I think this deck would benefit from Altar's ReapMTG Card: Altar's Reap > Skirsdag FlayerMTG Card: Skirsdag Flayer. Vault of the ArchangelMTG Card: Vault of the Archangel should give you all the removal you need.

I've found it to be invaluable in my zombie deck. It lets you respond to any removal or to chump a blocker and it gives you a definite advantage.

There's also a turn 3 5/5 demon: Altar's ReapMTG Card: Altar's Reap + Skirsdag High PriestMTG Card: Skirsdag High Priest + 2x Doomed TravelerMTG Card: Doomed Traveler.

Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter is too easy to remove. I'd favor 4x Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring.

I think you should reconsider SeanceMTG Card: Seance for resurrection since cards in your graveyard are dead cards anyway and you will face removal and trades. It will also prevent you from having to tap Archdemon of GreedMTG Card: Archdemon of Greed.

SeanceMTG Card: Seance or some kind of protection. Undying EvilMTG Card: Undying Evil might do.

I pulled a Liliana of the VeilMTG Card: Liliana of the Veil at tonight's DKA Sealed Deck event... Think she would work very well in here?

I showed my deck list to some MTG veterans (including a level 1 judge) and they said it looked solid, but every one of them questioned the use of Skirsdag High PriestMTG Card: Skirsdag High Priest. When he enters, your opponent goes into bounce mode to remove all of your small creatures to prevent you from having enough to tap for his ability.

Another thing that I didn't think about until I ran into it tonight... With this deck, if you opponent plays Curse of Death's HoldMTG Card: Curse of Death's Hold... Game Over. Maybe a few Intangible VirtueMTG Card: Intangible Virtues to ensure that your demon-fodder tokens don't immediately die?

January 29, 2012 12:16 a.m.

cthompsonguy says... #43

I wonder if Avacyn's CollarMTG Card: Avacyn's Collar would be worth running? +1/+0, Vigilance, and turn your demon fodder into Doomed TravelerMTG Card: Doomed Travelers doesn't sound too bad... I wish the equip cost was lower though.

January 29, 2012 9:28 p.m.

Trakanon says... #44

Going to try a variation on this deck tonight at FNM. I've only done limited testing, but I seem to be screwed on black mana every time. So I'm going -1 Vault of the ArchangelMTG Card: Vault of the Archangel, -2 PlainsMTG Card: Plains, +1 SwampMTG Card: Swamp, +2 Evolving WildsMTG Card: Evolving Wilds.

February 3, 2012 5:24 p.m.

cthompsonguy says... #45

I ran a very similar deck tonight at FNM...

All things considered, I did decently well with it, going 3-2 at the end of the night (plus several off-the-record games between matches). However, I noticed that none of those wins came from the demon, and in the only game that ended after I summoned the demon, I already had my opponent down to 3 life with no defending creatures anyways. After reviewing all of my matches, here is my analysis of ...

If your deck is built around supporting the demon, then your deck is probably fast/aggressive enough to win without him anyways.

February 4, 2012 12:47 a.m.

Trakanon says... #46

Yeah the demon was completely negligible for me tonight. My Champion of the ParishMTG Card: Champion of the Parish often got ridiculously big for the win, and the high priest probably saw the most hate. He was usually removed or exiled in the same turn he got played. Even with my mana scheme I still got mana screwed and often. There were several games where I had enough black removal in my hand to change the game in my favor, but never had the swamps or chapels out to play them.

February 4, 2012 1:28 a.m.

Soviett says... #47

Wow guys. Thanks for playtesting variations of this for me! My store ran a launch party draft which I two second in (Blue-Black control with Liliana and Snapcaster, mwah!).

Ok.. So I suppose I can cut the demon down to two, just as an end-game finisher. What do you guys think I should add in replace? How did the High Priests do, if you used them?

And swamp mana can be a problem. Alright, might have to increase the land count. I don't really want to run the Evolving WildsMTG Card: Evolving Wilds just because I can't waste a turn using it.

February 5, 2012 12:53 a.m.

cthompsonguy says... #48

I don't think it's a matter of reducing the demons... I think that converting this to either a WW Humans (like what I'm using, see deck:modified-hold-the-line), WU Haunted Humans, or WB Tokens would be your best bet.

February 5, 2012 1:32 a.m.

Wannabehero says... #49

I think the demon should be a 2 of, rather than 3, but that's just me.

However, your deck absolutely should take advantage of Tragic SlipMTG Card: Tragic Slip. It is just that good, especially in a deck that will be kicking off morbid all the damned time. Seriously, find the space for 4 of them. Now.

February 8, 2012 12:27 a.m.

Wannabehero says... #50

Also, you will need to playtest it and see what the right number is, but Evolving WildsMTG Card: Evolving Wilds should also really help with potential mana fixing so you can be sure to hit that one or two black mana you need for the play you see coming up the next turn.

Have you revisited this deck since the release of Shdows Over Innistrad? There are some nice gems in the new set that would be good in this deck! I don't know how viable it's going to be, but if you like human sacrifice and demons, you should look at Westvale Abbey! It's a scary card! Hanweir Militia Captain  Flip is nice too. Also, I don't know if anyone else has suggested it but you should consider Tragic Slip. It is top of the line removal in a deck where you are sacrificing creatures. If you have a minute, please check out my W/B sacrifice deck :
