Maybeboard

Just a fun, casual flicker control / mid-range deck with some Bant goodstuff. This list may be new, but it's actually descended from an older list that I broke apart to build Brago, King Eternal. I became bored with Brago's obvious and inflexible game plan, as well as his penchant for sitting around removing everyone else's fun while waiting for combo pieces. This deck is much more of a passion project for me, and it feels good to be back!

Roon of the Hidden Realm is a tough deck to build because it needs a lot of parts, and that makes the list very tight. Having far, far too many awesome cards to choose from is a good problem to have, but you definitely need a good understanding of the commander and his place in the metagame compared to other commanders, especially the aforementioned Brago. Roon plays a much longer game. He ramps mana, pulls dirtier tricks with his more flexible ability, and slowly builds value rather than trying to explosively combo off. I have found that it is not feasible to run many (or even any) infinite combos in Roon - infinites are basically going to be dead cards taking up space in a deck with no room, distracting you from a game plan that will definitely require all of your attention and resources to execute. If you want to play combos, Roon is inefficient and will only get in your way.

When building this deck it is very important that you do not plan to rely too much on Roon. By himself he's both much too slow and much too obvious of a target unless you are either making very clever plays or very lucky draws. So, run independent ETB engines like Conjurer's Closet. Anything you flicker either needs to be really efficient like Reclamation Sage or Eternal Witness, a powerful lockdown effect like Lavinia of the Tenth or Azor, the Lawbringer, or else a bomb that will get out of control quickly like Hornet Queen with Cathars' Crusade. You're almost forced to take a tutor and toolbox approach - you're not trying to flicker a ton of cards, you're trying to flicker the perfect card at the right time. There's also very little room for redundancy after including sufficient ramp and draw to support a consistent set up and mana curve.

In play, the idea is to appear pretty slow and innocuous while you gather ramp and hopefully cheap draw in the early game. Set up a value engine as early as possible and begin the abuse as soon as possible - the deck is slow enough to get started that you don't have time for complacent durdling! The key is to be careful not to over-extend or appear too threatening too quickly. After that, play defensively and prune any enemy board states that start to get out of hand, swinging with Roon whenever possible to take advantage of his key words. Be careful of drawing hate with powerful lockdown effects until you have assembled enough value to "go off" with a really heinous synergy like Deadeye Navigator + Duplicant, clearing the way to swing lethal with Avenger of Zendikar or Hornet Queen paired with either of Cathars' Crusade or Craterhoof Behemoth.

I'd like to find room for more equipment, to take better advantage of Roon's vigilance & trample. A very light voltron back-up plan could be within reach, since Roon is potentially lethal in 3 turns with only +3 power. There are some also really powerful recursion tools and other gimmicks I would love to run (Sundial of the Infinite + Mimic Vat, anyone?) but right now the list is just too tight for any extra chicanery. I may drop some of the less efficient tutors.

Advice is more than welcome, but please if you're going to suggest cards, do try to recommend corresponding cuts if at all possible. In fact, I would love it if you only have cuts to suggest because I have so much I want to add! There are SO many cards that would do great in this deck, but Roon has room for only the very most efficient and impactful.
