Roon of the Hidden Realm (Enchantress midrange)

Commander / EDH* GWU (Bant)

DJSlayer07

Originally conceived as a stax deck but morphed into more of a midrange/control shell over time, it breaks parity with stax pieces well and so still runs a few. Untap engines like Seedborn, Garruk, and Reclamation allow us to safely play things like Winter Orb, Hokori, and Stasis without hurting ourselves too badly (but Seedborn doesn't get around Stasis, so watch out for that). One win condition is to establish a hard lock with Stasis, Root Maze, Sterling Grove, and some sort of untap engine (or Sun Titan) while relying on Roon's vigilance to poke opponents to death.

Most people think of Roon as the blink general, and so pack the deck full of strong enter-the-battlefield effects, however, the fact that he can target any creature, including the opponent's, gives him a lot of utility, and cards like Containment Priest and stifle effects can turn his effect into permanent exile instead. Even without those effects, being able to remove problematic or essential creatures from the board for a turn can be life-saving in tight situations. There are some ETBs in the deck, obviously, they're more focused on utility than straight value.

Some other fun Roon-specific tricks:

  • Blinking Gilded Drake to steal multiple creatures.
  • Exchanging an opponent's spell for one of your creatures with Sudden Substitution, then blinking the creature back to your board.
  • Attacking with Roon, then exiling the creature they use to block before damage so that they take full trample damage.
  • Blinking Hokori during an opponent's end step so that it returns at the start of your next end step, giving you a full untap step while your opponents are stuck under Hokori's effect.
  • Blinking the cards that Primordial Mist manifests so that they return to the battlefield faceup no matter what permanent type they are.

Last thing to talk about is that the deck runs an enchantress-themed subpackage. Despite Roon's ability being all about creatures, cards like Eidolon of Blossoms, Guardian Project, and the aforementioned Primordial Mist synergize extremely well with him. Teferi's Ageless Insight doubles the strength of all the other draw-engines in the deck, which can cause things to get out of hand extremely quickly once you start chaining spells together, and cards such as Deafening Silence, Stony Silence, Smothering Tithe, etc., make things more difficult for the opponents and/or advance your own board state in other ways, creating a powerful synergy that's difficult for the opponent to interact with. Earthcraft+Squirrel Nest is an easy combo-out if you need it. A more difficult combo to assemble is Eternal Witness+Omniscience+Paradoxical Outcome, which allows for infinite draw, but since the deck isn't running Labman-type effects, it's not an auto-win. That said, it does basically allow you to instantly establish both a hard Stasis lock and the Squirrel Nest combo at the same time, meaning that your opponents are nearly guaranteed to lose on your next turn. Cards like Intuition and Academy Rector can help get these combos out much faster than normal.

"But why don't you just play Derevi?"

One, because I like the flexibility Roon's activated ability provides, and the feeling like I can always have some kind of trick up my sleeve by knowing exactly where to point it when my opponents are close to winning. Two, Derevi gets pigeonholed into fairly linear (though admittedly effective) strategies, whereas Roon naturally allows for more versatility in his card choice and strategies, and that fits my attitude as a player better. Three, Derevi naturally draws a ton of hate at pretty much every table, whereas Roon flies under the radar for most people. Four, Derevi is a dumb bird, but Roon is a cool rhino bro.

Bonus: Check out my lists for Chulane and Tuvasa to see how the core of this deck can easily be swapped around to other Bant generals if you want to focus more on either creatures or enchantments specifically.
