Roon of the Fun Police

Commander / EDH GWU (Bant)

PookandPie

Roon of the Hidden Realm, effectively functioning like a 35 card transformation board for my Chulane deck.

Roon was my second Commander deck, built simultaneously with Ghave: Baby Makin' and Alimony back in 2013. This was my favorite control deck in Commander, generally seeking to outvalue my opponents and prevent early attempts to combo off, without playing things like Winter Orb, Static Orb, or Stasis. Interact with opponents, generate value, and enjoy your time with Winky Blinky the One-Eyed Rhino!

Gilded Drake can be re-utilized with Roon and Venser, the Sojourner to repeatedly steal opposing creatures. Ask your opponents if they want to gain some life, flash in Solitude , and then blink or flicker it with other cards you control.

One of the primary methods of winning is using Mirror Entity with Karmic Guide and Reveillark along with any creature with power 2 or less that has an ETB, such as Venser, Shaper Savant , Watcher for Tomorrow or Wall of Omens or Coiling Oracle or Cloudblazer or Mulldrifter , Skyclave Apparition or Fiend Hunter , etc.. Pay 0 into Mirror Entity's ability a few thousand times without passing priority, then let Reveillark's trigger bring back in Karmic Guide and one of the above creatures, then Guide's trigger will bring back Reveillark, and allow this to repeat. In the case of Venser, you can return your opponents to turn 0 by bouncing all their permanents, which will typically cause them to forfeit (end the loops with Mirror Entity, Karmic Guide, and Reveillark in play so you can easily restart the loop in the event of funny business). If nothing else, you can use another creature to dig to Palinchron and Phantasmal Image , make infinite mana, then pump your creatures with Mirror Entity or Finale of Devastation for the win.

Palinchron + Phantasmal Image = Infinite mana
Mirari's Wake + Palinchron = Infinite mana
Palinchron + Panharmonicon = Infinite mana
Gaea's Cradle + Palinchron = Infinite mana
Growing Rites of Itlimoc + Palinchron = Infinite mana

Infinite mana can be infinite blinks with Emiel, or creature pumps with Finale of Devastation or Mirror Entity.

An important trick the deck can do is Chord of Calling into Ixidron to prevent players from comboing off using creatures. This is especially valuable if someone has a sac outlet on board already, because a Chord with X=5 means they need to sacrifice their creatures in anticipation of Ixidron coming out, because when your opponents learn what creature you put into play off of Chord of Calling or Eldritch Evolution, their creatures are already face down (this is primarily because Ixidron's ability does not use the stack, similar to a clone, so it doesn't die from 0 toughness, and the creature enters on the resolution of the tutor spell. So, the only information your opponents know before Ixidron is on field and everything is face down is what the value of X is on Chord of Calling). Once Ixidron is down, you can turn your own things face up by flickering, blinking, and the like.
