Rocket Science. Also known as those things that are impossible to do. Also also known as the greatest thing ever, with MTG as a close second and breathing as an even closer third. This deck is so fun and difficult to play that I've named it in honor of my favorite activity. This is grixis midrange, the most rewarding and enjoyable deck I've found, that is if you don't make some grievous misplay. I find this deck fun because it's highly interactive, has multiple lines of play available so each game is different, and possesses synergies and combos that are so rewarding to successfully pull off that at the end of every match I leave with a smile and occasionally (usually) even a win. But, like rocket science, the fun of this deck comes at the cost of being maddening to play with perfectly. The ability to have multiple lines of play means that the best play is oftentimes non-intuitive. Because this deck can play as a grindy midrange deck, an explosive aggro deck, a resilient burn deck, or a tempo-control deck, successful piloting requires a plan for the next few turns, the ability to adapt to anything your opponent throws at you, and proper use of cards within your line of play. Enjoy!

Huge shoutout to TheAlexGnan for making the original version of this deck, bloody-singleminded-competitive. Check out his deck too. It's a work of art.

Full deck

There's the full deck. The sideboard is across the top and on the right side is my Zombie token and +1/+1 counters I use for Kalitas and the Rock Lobster , Paper Tiger , and Scissors Lizard cards I use to decide who gets the play.

Alters and Signed cards

Here are just the alters and signed cards in the deck. The alters were made by me. The signed cards I had done at GP Minneapolis (with the exception of 1 Snapcaster Mage, which was already signed when I traded for it). The Snapcaster Mages are signed by Shahar Shenhar, Alexander Hayne, and Alan Comer from left to right. All 4 Bloodghast are signed by Sam Black. Murderous Cut is signed by Owen Turtenwald. Thoughtseize is signed by Reid Duke. All 4 Bolts are signed by Luis Scott Vargas.

Feedback

Thanks for reading! This primer is still a work in progress so please give me feedback on typos, bad sentences, and anything that is confusing. Please feel free to be picky / critical of it because that's the only way to improve the primer. It's also perpetually out of date.

I am always open to suggestions, so feel free to comment on card improvements / deck flaws and if you ever playtest it against your own deck, please tell me how it did! I'd love to hear about it. If you upvote feel free to leave a comment as I'd love to return the favor. See ya in the comments!

If anyone can name the background picture, I'll have a lot of respect for you. If you just say "it's a picture of space!" without the actual name of the image, to you I have to say: yes, you're quite clever, aren't you. rolls eyes.

The inspiration. The original. thealexgnan has poured his soul into that deck so the least you can do is check it out. It's the deck that started it all.

This is the deck I would build if someone gave me more Snapcaster Mage and Liliana of the Veil (hint hint if you have extras laying around and you want to donate them to charity, the TOBBRSCF (ToolmasterOfBrainerd Builds Rocket Science (Competitive) Fund) is a great organization that will gladly take your unwanted Snaps and Lilis off your hands, free of charge (I bet you can get a tax break if you do (if that's not reason enough, I'll stop nesting parenthesis if you do (no, I'm not Threaten ing you, nor is this a Bribery ; I'm just trying to Reward the Faithful )))). It is considerably more powerful, much more flexible, and has better matchups almost across the board. I'm trying to build up to it with prize packs, but I need to start winning more before that'll happen. In a $5 tournament I'm finding it difficult to walk out with more than $5 in prizes out of the 3 prize packs I can semi-consistently get.

Took this to FNM because it's a super fun deck. I faced UW Control twice and lost. It turns out that a deck that exiles stuff is hard to beat. I beat UR Thing in the Ice and beat some weird artifact prison combo deck (centered around Whir of Invention) in 1 game and after that my opponent didn't want to play anymore. I never really drew good hands tonight, except against the artifact deck. I took both UW Control players to game 3 and lost to Celestial Colonnade in both game 3's. This deck is probably supposed to have another Field of Ruin. I left my Terminates in my mainboard too, but couldn't find them.

Against the artifact deck I think I cast 7 Lightning Bolt, 4 Kolaghan's Command, and 5 Snapcaster Mage. I don't think I turned a single creature sideways. I beat him through Witchbane Orb, Chalice of the Void on 1, and Ensnaring Bridge. Crazy game.

I won't be playing for a long time, but next summer I think I'll play this deck at a few FNM's again.
