Description

Red Magic is the magic of battle. The primary power lies in speed and aggression. The goal is to remove the opponent from the battlefield as quickly as possible before they can do the same to the deck. Red spells combined with cheap creatures who are both good blockers and attackers allow for more resilience past the early stages than pure burn.

This is an Old School Magic red speed deck with a theme of weapon spells and creatures.

Strategy

The deck uses cheap burn spells to deal early damage and control problematic creatures (ones with good power for their cost). At the midgame, it puts into play creatures that can both block and be turned to attack. If the game goes long, card draw and a couple of finishers try to close out the game. If playing against control, the strategy is to hold onto the cheap spells and attempt to throw them out all at once to overwhelm counters. Almost everything in the deck costs four mana or less.

Tactics

Burn

Removal

  • Pyroclasm: This should remove early enemy attackers so as to conserve other burn spells.
  • AEther Flash: This will stop weaker enemy summons and weaken stronger summons to make them susceptable to instant burn damage upon the turn they arrive. All of the creatures in the deck will survive the two damage.

Finishers

  • Elkin Bottle + Grafted Skullcap: The deck runs on very little mana, and so card draw becomes the issue. The deck will be top decking if the game goes on long enough, and both of these are efficient sources of card draw with downsides that do not matter to the deck.
  • Sword of the Ages + Final Fortune: Sword of the Ages can provide the extra boost to finish the enemy after a final attack. When combined with Final Fortune, it allows three attack phases before the opponent goes. There is also no downside if the Sword of Ages (LEG) doesn't finish the enemies, because the game will be decided either way at that point. If it is obvious that the deck will lose in a close game, Final Fortune combined with card draw can pull out a win.
