Red Deck FTW (EMN - Retired)

Casual Aggro Budget Burn Mono-Red Red Deck Wins

My take on RDW for EMN Standard. In testing so far, I've found it surprisingly strong against Bant Company (at least against Devin Koepke's Collected Bant).

If you get a chance, I'd LOVE your thoughts, and especially any playtesting results. Thanks!

Playtesting tips (so far):

If you haven't already stopped by snarlmkiv's thread sometime: All Things Red Deck, I recommend you do so. I think you'll find it a fun and helpful community.

Some shout-outs: This deck was inspired by Max McVety's Mono-Red Aggro deck, which made the Top 64 at SCG Columbus. As always, huge thanks to michael921 for suggestions and testing; you can check out his latest brew at Keywords.deck (EMN Standard).

Finally, please don't hesitate to +1 Upvote this deck if you like it :-)

I think you could easily do -1 Thermo-Alchemist for +1 Bedlam Reveler. The ability to discard your hand (madness enabler if it matters) and then draw 3 is just amazing. You want to do that at least once or more every single game.

I am a bit surprised that Exquisite Firecraft was relegated to a 2x in the sideboard but I'm sure testing will show if it's the correct place for them.

I like the idea of an extra Bedlam Reveler, but I'm hesitant to give up a mainboard Thermo-Alchemist for it (Alchemist is just so nice against Sylvan Advocate). Another on the sideboard though maybe. Hmmm ...

And yeah, I love Exquisite Firecraft too, especially against Planeswalkers. Not sure if I have that right yet either ... :-)

Also, thanks for the +1!

A card you should consider in the side is Devour in Flames. It solves 2 potential problems.

  1. PW's with loyalty too high for a single burn spell to deal with. Examples include Ob nix, Gideon, Tamiyo.. Or PW's who will have 4 loyalty after getting their first pump such as lili and nissa. Doing 2 for 1 with burn spells is not a good plan vs a problematic PW.

  2. Creatures with toughness higher than 3 can be problematic for burn decks in the current format. There's also many ways to achieve that via buffs, enchantments (Always Watching ), etc.. so it should be a consideration. 2CMC to deal 5 damage to any creature is solid. And again not having to 2 for 1 yourself is beneficial.

Oh that's great, thanks much!
I've used it in a Gruul build (it's amazing with Tireless Tracker), but had never even thought about it here. Very nice!

What about Kozilek's Return? Could deal with decks that like to go wide such as W/r humans, g/w tokens (to some extent), Spirits and other aggro strategies. Sideboard card for sure but I think it's valuable right now.

Yeah Kozilek's Return was awesome in SOI Standard. I had kind of discounted it for EMN Standard, but you've got me re-thinking the potential meta again and I think you're right ... I should probably find a home for it. Thanks much!

Nahiri's Wrath is busted...just sayin'

I'm not sure Nahiri's Wrath would work well in this deck, but yeah, it would be buh-roken in a Madness shell or a Lupine Prototype build. Sideboard only though for sure ... it's TERRIBLE against Spell Queller. Thanks though!

I think Weaver of Lightning is the weakest card in your sideboard and I would recommend putting in 4x Kozilek's Return instead. The reason being that it's a board wipe that is very effective against multiple decks such as Humans, Spirits, Nantuko CoCo, and just aggro strategies in general. AND when you play Bedlam Reveler you get to do it again for 5 damage. I think it's a very solid strategy right now. Which is also why I think you should make Bedlam Reveler a 3x in the main but you could get away with it being a 2x only most likely.

Are you still having issues finding a good starting hand btw? We could look into that together if you want.

aah nevermind it's Eldrazi card only to activate the second wave of Kozilek. My bad.

This is the first time I've played with Collective Defiance and it is AMAZING. Totally worth the four slots.

I think Exquisite Firecraft is better than Fiery Temper, even though it's Sorcery speed. You could have easily dispatched some of my Creatures with it that were 4 toughness.

Village Messenger  Flip would be more difficult for my deck to deal with than Lightning Berserker, but my deck probably has waaaaay more recursion than others you will play.

You know, this deck looks to be Frontier legal, so you could go to that instead of Casual, if you wanted. Double check me on this, but I'm pretty sure. This would be a pretty sweet deck for Frontier, I think.

Cool deck! +1 from me!

If he wants to go into frontier, most of the cards would be swapped for better options since it goes all the way back to M15. So much better burn back then :p

Thanks much for the kudos! Yeah, the deck is Frontier-legal, but while it was pretty good in EMN Standard, I'm afraid (as Noctem points out), it would not be remotely competitive in Frontier. I think if I was going to mod' one of my old Standard decks for Frontier, I'd probably start with Izzet Thoptorzz (OGW) 3/20/16.

Thanks again!
