Description

OHHH YEEAHHHH!!!

Just my basic run of the mill Omnath, Locus of Rage deck with a slight elemental sub-theme.

Plan is, ramp to Omnath, play lands, make 5/5 elementals, and beat face.

Nothing crazy spicy here, just a solid deck that can win games. Not going to surprise anyone with this deck. Just going to get value and beat people up, or bolt their faces.

Token Time: I'm particular/slightly obsessed with tokens. So, these are the tokens I use in this deck....ya know, in case you were wondering

SOLID GRUUL DECK. EARNS +1 FROM ME.

MAYBE ADD THAT ALWAYS-MAKE-YOUR-LAND-DROP LAND? AKA Ghost Town.

CRUSH THEM!

What is Buried Ruin primarily used for here? Since Omnath decks tend to be tight on value lands, i feel like this could be something better like a Vesuva for your Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle, or a Stomping Ground to up your mountain count, or even a Kessig Wolf Run as a mana dump. Animist's Awakening and Nissa's Renewal were really lackluster for me, so I cut them in favor of Verdant Confluence and Hour of Promise. Skyshroud Claim and Nature's Lore would also be excellent ramp spells, especially if you include Stomping Ground, Sheltered Thicket and (more expensive abviously) Taiga. Crop Rotation, Expedition Map Sylvan Scrying, and Reap and Sow are worth a look into to grab value lands. I've had good success in my list running cards like Earthquake as a finisher, often times making a big swing with tokens then casting a X=>5 earthquake to get those last points of damage in, especially with bolt triggers from Omnath, Locus of Rage. I'll post my list below for reference, I have lots of fun with it! Nice deck, I kind of like the inclusion of Wave of Vitriol, I'll look into it myself.

I was using it as backup to Lightning Greaves, Sword of the Animist, and Ashnod's Altar in case they got removed...less so the sword, but the greaves and altar can be game changing parts of the deck. Buuuut I could definitely see cutting it for that Ghost Town now haha.

Axeplorer haha did you edit your comment? Because I don't remember ready all those awesome suggestions...thanks for the input!

I'll probably avoid some of the more pricey cards because I build my decks in paper, and I already have too many haha. I just need to start uploading them all. Thanks again!!

Haha, Starsky2814 I think your deck is pulling most of the weight...you have almost 130 upvotes and a ton of comments. But I agree, Omnath all the way!!

Starsky2814, usaDiabetic,

Team Omnath lets go! What are our thoughts on Traverse the Outlands? It seems the most likely card from the new C17 to be added to an Omnath list. If we do add it, what ramp card is likely to be cut? Personally i'd say Boundless Realms, MAYBE** Explosive Vegetation if you are already tight on 4 CMC ramp.

Axeplorer I keep going back and forth on that card, because if you're trying to ramp to Omnath and draw that card with no creatures on board, it's almost a dead draw...but with Omnath or any other high power creature it's great....im considering cutting Nissa's Renewal for it, but not sure just yet.

usaDiabetic, for the Gruul-Aid Man of Zendikar, I would agree with the cut of Nissa's Renewal for Traverse the Outlands.

Axeplorer, as for the L A N D B O Y S, I would say a fair trade off would be Verdant Confluence for Traverse the Outlands.

If not any of those cuts suggested, I would at least advise staying away from cutting any early ramp cards. As those are crucial for us to have early access to our commander. Also, hold on to Boundless Realms. I couldn't begin to tell you how many times that card or even a Scapeshift has played out to GG!

Good luck fam!

Starsky2814 Gruul-Aid!!! Damn it, how did I miss that?!!

You think? Im just scared about having that card in hand with no real board precense or having just a bunch of 2/2's out

My plan is to play Traverse the Outlands the turn after casting Omnath. I'll have five 5/5 elementals and just ramped five basic lands for a CMC of five. Really worth it to me. Plus, I usually have a haste enabler active so I can do some real work. It's the same move I make when I have either Boundless Realms or Scapeshift in hand at the time.

Ogre Battledriver and Sarkhan Vol are beast by the way.

usaDiabetic says... #14

I actually cut Ogre Battledriver for Chandra, Flamecaller, but yeah it could be worth taking another look at that card over maybe the Ulvenwald Hydra

Starsky2814 says... #15

Maybe also consider Akroma's Memorial, Fires of Yavimaya and Fervor. Never have I once regretted having so many haste enablers. My playgroup hates how often I smack them around with a mass amount of elementals that just came out on the same turn.

I like the name change of "The Gruul-Aid Man of Zendikar." You are now top rank #43 from the #64 spot. Great work! Let's keep it rolling team Omnath!

Fires of Yavimaya, Hammer of Purphoros, and Anger are the haste enablers i've been using. So far the one I'm least happy with has been Anger, he's not always in the grave and when I wanna go off and he's in my hand it feels bad, usually have to blow a bolt trigger on him or something. usaDiabetic, the Ulvenwald Hydra has been very good for me, performing excellently at blocking a scary looking Prossh, Skyraider of Kher, but mostly getting me my Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle or Gaea's Cradle and drawing 8+ cards with Rishkar's Expertise. Starsky2814, I think that the confluence-traverse trade is a fair one, i'll try it out when the set drops! On a side note of Fires of Yavimaya, One time my opponent tried to Earthquake for 5 but forgot I had the fires out, so I got to sac it to pump Omnath so he lived, then the player received a face full of lightning bolts. Felt real good I've got to say.

usaDiabetic says... #18

starsky haha no way?! Where do you even see that ranking?

Axeplorer I have the exact same feeling about Anger in this deck.(glad I run Ashnod's Altar partly for that reason)...Yeah I think Fires of Yavimaya is going to make it into the 99.

I have a few updates in mind, but I want to physically have the cards in the deck before I make the changes on here.

starsky Axeplorer

Made some revisions to the deck.(also changed the card art that's displayed)

Still looking for a spot for Fervor and/or Fires of Yavimaya...I was thinking of cutting Evo Leap or the Sword of the Animist. Thoughts, suggestions?

LOVE OMNATH

I'm currently trying to make the description for my list good. I have a few suggestions based on my experience, Boundless Realms is not a favorite of mine for several reasons. First, it can't be used to help get Omnath out because of its 7 cmc so early-game is a waste of hand-space. Second, by the time it can be used, I'm always scared of a responding kill-spell on Omnath nixing the landfall value Boundless Realms can have. Or if you face any land destruction, you leave yourself in a very weak position, not to mention a boardwipe that doesn't let you bolt (exile or return to hand), etc... Over-all it's just too risky and playing something like Nissa's Renewal get's plenty of board-presence without the risk. Fires of Yavimaya is excellent. Another great win-con is Triumph of the Hordes if you're into that sorta thing. You don't even have to attack, just sacrifice elementals and bolt face with Omnath!

Anyway I hope this helps and feel free to check out my version here...Omnath, Rain of Fire

Alhanalm Thanks for the input!

I have similar feeling about Boundless Realms seems like a win more card. When I first built this deck, I had it in, then cut it, and now it's back haha. I would like to cut it for Fires or Fervor, but cutting ramp seems wrong in this deck.

I actually run triumph of the hordes in my Atraxa deck that I haven't uploaded on here yet. I have no problem with infect in commander(makes games go faster and the infect player rarely wins). Never thought of putting it in Omnath...but I'll probably keep it out, because it's not in the spirit of the Gruul-Aid Man.

Yah man I'll definitely check it out, feel free to upvote!

If you are ever worried about your sorcery spells such as Boundless Realms being countered, add Boseiju, Who Shelters All to protect them. Since you did add Ghost Town, I think you should add Burgeoning so you never miss an opponent land drop too. As for either Fires of Yavimaya or Fervor, I'd say cut Sword of the Animist rather than Evolutionary Leap. I already feel like you are light on sac outlets as is.

August 15, 2017 12:55 a.m.

usaDiabetic says... #24

Once again starsky all wonderful suggestions....im going to leave the build as is for now and see how it plays out over the next few weeks(I will get Fires or Fervor in there though)

I had a similar thought on evo leap...I literally had it out of the sleeve before I thought better of it, and put it back in.

August 15, 2017 1:03 a.m.

Axeplorer says... #25

i agree, sword seems a better cut than evo leap. consider Goblin Bombardment as a premium sac outlet (perhaps even over leap).

Ditto on Goblin Bombardment and yes, a definite upvote from me

Nissa's Renewal? Would that be a good addition?

September 13, 2017 11:54 a.m.

usaDiabetic says... #28

Shadow12721 yes it would, but I recently just cut it in favor of Hour of Promise.

It was a hard decision, but HoP can find any land. So it lets me go and find any of my utility lands, which I like better than the life gain of Renewal.

Thanks for the suggestion though!
