Ral Zarek Destroys Lands

Modern* Competitive Land Destruction

Land destruction deck with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Spreading Algae and Ral Zarek

  1. Birds of Paradise - The deck has a demanding mana base. Also helps on land destruction, enables bigger Death Cloud, and eventually is food for Scavenging Ooze.

  2. Cunning Sparkmage - My old favourite! It can tap twice with, Pestermite, Deceiver and Ral. Changed the other one to Izzet Staticaster as it's generally better.

  3. Deceiver Exarch - Can tap a land to destroy it - if you have cast Spreading Algae.

  4. Pestermite - Can tap a land to destroy it - if you have cast Spreading Algae. Can also attack!

  5. Scavenging Ooze - It's good in many situations, like after a beefy Death Cloud.

  6. Simian Spirit Guide - Mostly for mana acceleration, but you can also cast it to protect Ral.

Other Spells

  1. Spreading Algae - Repeatable land destruction for , yes, pls! All you need is Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and you can cast it on anything.

  2. Ral Zarek - Use +1 ability on a Spreding Algaed land and it's gone. The idea is to lock your opponent down, by destroying his/her lands, with Ral, Urborg and Algae. Untap is also good with Cunning Sparkmage and/or Izzet Staticaster.

  3. Death Cloud - Helps you to clear the board & hand and destroy more lands. Ideally you cast this after Ral Zarek and get rid of everything! Birds help you to make this bigger.

  4. Duress - Discard, and seeing your opponents hand helps you make a game plan.

  5. Harsh Scrutiny - I like this card a lot as it has value even if the discard misses.

  6. Sylvan Scrying - Search for Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth or something else you need.

  7. Go for the Throat - Oh' the throat!

  8. Grixis Charm - Return any permanent to hand or removal.

The deck has 3x Sylvan Scrying so we have a few utility lands:

  1. Kessig Wolf Run - Enables squishies for attack, if all else is lost.

  2. Treetop Village - Sometimes all you need is an ape.

  3. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth - Crucial as it enables you to cast Spreading Algae on any land.

I'd reccomend some more sources of land destruction- Plow Under is super good. I tried a deck running all nonbasics and Choke/Spreading Seas before now, but it is tricky to get the land type changes. Some cards allow lands to become any type Grixis Illusionist springs to mind. There is a 1 drop black enchantment that makes any land a swamp. Good luck with the tinkering though.

Thanks for the tips! Plow Under sure is sweet, but the cmc 5 seems high. I'll to try it out! The deck needs something that can destroy lands, but is good on it's own too. It's tricky.

First version of the deck: Titans Land Smash had 4x Smallpox and Drownyard Temple. And it almost worked...

And I've also considered Evil Presence. But as the opponent can be playing swamps in his/her main deck it has to go to the sideboard.

Polluted Dead Helldozer Deus of Calamity

Some cards that destroy lands. Helldozer might be good if everythings a swamp, wont be hard to cast and you can untap him lots to destroy more land

Thanks for the suggestions! I had not thought about Deus of Calamity. It's an interesting card that would be sweet with double strike. All mentioned cards do destroy lands, but I'm worried they would be intrinsically too slow for modern.

I think you should add more land destruction cards. You have 5 land destruction cards, with most of them being pretty conditional, so you might not be able to do that all the time.

Stone Rain could be of some use, as is Molten Rain. Ghost Quarter could work, but I don't think the mana would work.

If you are willing to add in white, Ajani Vengeant could be decent. It would add a threat, which I think you need, as I don't see many ways to actually win.

TL;DR I think you have a cool idea, but it seems like it just isn't enough/too slow because it has too many pieces, and also a little threat light.

Earlier versions had more land destruction cards like Rain of Tears and Smallpox, but the deck has moved into destroying lands indirectly and having a board presence in 4x Pestermite & 2x Deceiver Exarch to attack and better protect Ral.

Ajani Vengeant could be sweet! I have been thinking about him...

Thanks for the suggestions!
