Already have some Theros cards in mind to test:

Have you considered Assault Strobe ? It is a staple in most infect decks that run red, and for a good reason.

Thanks for the hint TitansFTW, will test it.

Deck edit after Theros release:

Let's see how Modern metagame evolves after Theros. Maybe I'll need to move a couple of Rakdos Charm to main deck :)

Read the Bones and Anger of the Gods have been pretty good additions so far...

A friend of mine suggested me to include Haakon, Stromgald Scourge instead of a Phyrexian Vatmother as it provides a nice combo with Phyrexian Crusader . I'm considering it and will test it :)

Ok, I really want to replace a Phyrexian Vatmother by another creature card that can give some other options (and possibly a good combo). Haakon, Stromgald Scourge (combo with Phyrexian Crusader ) and Olivia Voldaren (excellent against "heavy" creatures) would be interesting choices, but they're slow for Modern in this deck.

I'm searching for a creature, probably legendary, that can make a good combo with Phyrexian Crusader . What should I choose?

Suggestions and comments are really appreciated :)

+1 for me I like that you have control in the deck, as for a creature what about Reaper of Sheoldred or Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon . They can give you more infect.

Thanks Fuss78. I'm considering both Reaper of Sheoldred are Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon :) Will probably run some tests with them.

Just update the Maybeboard with the creatures I'm considering to replace one or two Phyrexian Vatmother .

After some pretty good tests, decided to replace one Phyrexian Vatmother by a Hand of the Praetors .

Hand of the Praetors is more vulnerable to spot removal than Vatmother and Crusader but provides a very good combo with them and with Inkmoth Nexus .

It's perfect to increase the pressure on the table :)

Update: Not completely happy with Hand of the Praetors . Pretty good when opponent has no removal, but too vulnerable otherwise. Still considering other options. Suggestions and comments are really appreciated :)

Have you considered Blightning

Walrusyn says... #17

GamerSonX thanks for your comment and suggestion. I have :) Unfortunately, Blightning can only damage players, not creatures. As infect is my win condition, Blightning is not good enough for me. If Blightning could also damage creatures, I would surely have some in my main deck.

I play the 'traditional mono-black control infect deck' as I had a play set of Liliana of the Veil and Phyrexian Crusader , though I have been thinking whether I should or should not include Red. Currently, Tron is the worst match-up and I don't see how the splash will significantly will help me wining that match.

That being set, the Lili's are awesome! I can really recommend trying her. I first played only two main and had the other two in the sideboard, but I nowadays play the full set main and I don't think I would go back. There hasn't been a single time that she wasn't good. If she isn't make and impact, the game was lost already...

Another all star that I play main (one copy), is Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon . Early game I dump if for Lili, but late game it can make you win out of nowhere. Haven't tried the Phyrexian Vatmother , nor the Reaper of Sheoldred yet, since I didn't like them in standard back in time either. Did you time them, if so, how does that work for you? I only play the 4 Crusaders, 1 Skittles and 4 Nexus as creatures. Sometimes I do feel like I would like one of two more creatures in the deck. I will try to put the deck on the site later this week and link it here if you would be interested.

Dutchmen thanks for your comment and suggestions. I really need to try a playset of Liliana of the Veil . Haven't tried it yet since they're expensive, but will definitely try to get a playset.

I agree with you. The worst match-up for the mono-black version is Tron. Rakdos Charm is a pretty good addition against Tron as it can significantly slow down Tron, by destroying some of the artifacts that search for the lands, like Expedition Map . On the other hand, Rise/Fall can be way better than Wrench Mind , namely against Tron and Affinity.

Will probably run a couple of tests with Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon instead of Hand of the Praetors .

Do you have your list somewhere?

Minor tweak on the lands to avoid potential life loss and to be a little less vulnerable to Blood Moon : 2 Blood Crypt out and 1 Arid Mesa and 1 Mountain in.

Another tweak: Hand of the Praetors out, Phyrexian Vatmother back.

Hand of the Praetors abilities are great but Vatmother is a 4/5 and way less vulnerable to spot removal.

Keep coming back here :) I don't want to be nitpicking, but the Arid Mesa and Mountain will not make you less vulnerable to Blood Moon . You keep the same amount of Swamp s, thus, as the Moon comes down, you have well counted 4 black sources in you deck. Exactly the same as you had before

Good that you went back to Phyrexian Vatmother , but I am still a huge advocate to Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon . Skittles has evasion and is (more) resilient. Yes, one mana more expensive, but I think worth it.

As you splash red you have access to Sowing Salt , but why do you not play? No space in the sb? It hurts so many deck in the format...

Dutchmen, thanks for your comment and suggestions :) Indeed, you're right about the Arid Mesa and Blood Moon , I'm still trying to tune the lands a little bit. The main idea is to reduce the potential life loss, though, and find some space for a couple of Thoughtseize . I'm considering other options like Gemstone Mine .

Didn't know Sowing Salt , will take a look at it :)
