Sideboard

An incredibly fast and efficient deck that is almost entirely red but leans on Black mostly for the sideboard.

Main Deck Notes:

  • This deck operates primarily in the trenches - it is meant to be aggressive and fight, brutally and frequently.
  • First Strike Madness. Stonewright, first strike and instant speed removal is a brutal, brutal combination. Opponents are frequently at a loss as to how to block this deck. Searing Spear is used to save my guys from disadvantageous match-ups.
  • Dreadbore. Dreadbore isn't ideal, as its not instant speed, but it can take out both a Boros Reckoner and a planeswalker.
  • Cheap Combo. The deck has enough one-drops that dropping Blasphemous Act on your Boros Reckoner in turn 4 is completely feasible, assuming your opponent was nice enough to not chump-block with his mana dorks.
  • When in doubt, swing.

Matchups

  • Mirror Match. The abundance of first strike in this deck means that matches against RDW, Rakdos and Boros decks often end up in my favor. Use Searing Spear to keep them from triggering battalion.
  • Esper Tokens. My metagame is filthy with Snapcaster Mage/Lingering Souls decks. These games are usually the only ones long enough where a Bonfire of the Damned is effective.
  • Graveyard Shenanigans. Grafdigger's Cage exists primarily to screw with Snapcaster and Reanimator decks. This combined with swapping a couple Searing Spears with Pillar of Flame is usually enough to shut down zombie decks. Also, its easy to forget that Ash Zealot punishes that behavior as well.
  • Stupid Geist. Any of the first strikers do a great job of keeping Geist of Saint Traft from swinging blindly.
  • Omnidoor and other combo decks. Slaughter Games does a great job of neutering these. I usually go for Supreme Verdict first.
  • Superpig. Boros Reckoner is the anti-Thragtusk card. Skullcracking a player as he summons Thragtusk is effectively an 8-point life swing for 2 mana.
  • Over The Top. I like to side Falkenrath Aristocrat in against midrange decks and send her over the top in the second and/or third matches. As a bonus, several of your smaller creatures are good human snacking for her. I used to have Rakdos the Defiler filling that role, and he was quite effective most of the time, but is usually a prime target for removal. His special ability has never done much for me.

Suggestions

Updates Add

Updated to match what I currently play.

  • Took out Blasphemous Act (too many people run Reckoner now).
  • Took out Hellion Crucible (lost a couple games to not having triple red for Reckoner).
  • Moved the Aristocrats to the main deck, as being able to fly above a Reckoner is now key.

Turns out the rise of the Reckoners has made a huge impact on the deck.
