Sideboard

Yes, I know that Maelstrom Archangel isn't a legal commander but, counter point, so what? She deserves to be and will remain as my one and only 5 color angel tribal commander! After 6+ years of modifying this deck, this is the current version as of right now (3/16/20). I finally got it to a point I'm content with and like to play it as my main Commander deck. (Iona, Shield of Emeria is no longer commander legal, however, at one point in time she was legal and at this point I'm too attached to her being a part of the deck to remove her. Though, if need be, she can be replaced with virtually any other angel or relevant card and have the deck still run smooth.)

I'll try my hand at a half-assed explanation of some aspects of the deck I think are important.

The creatures in the deck are all of the creature type Angel. There are not really any generic angels in the deck; What I mean is that there are no run-of-the-mill/generic token creatures with no noteworthy abilities. Every angel either has multiple static abilities, or an activated/passive ability capable of altering play or turning the tides of the match.

Noteworthy Combos:

  • Patriarch's Bidding + Tunnel Vision ~ This combo is a gamble. Target yourself with Tunnel Vision, naming Patriarch's Bidding as the specific card. One effectively mills themselves till they reach the desired card, upon which drawing and playing Patriarch's Bidding, one can drop a number of Angels onto the field. I have, personally, dropped upwards of 30 Angels onto the field using this combo! There is only a slim chance of it not playing out well at all, however it has happened to me in play before, where I have milled a small handful of non-creature type cards before coming across Patriarch's Bidding. In my opinion, the gamble is well worth it though!
  • Helm of the Host + nearly any creature in the deck is capable of being completely busted! To name a few, there is: Aurelia, the Warleader ~ infinite combat phases / Iona, Shield of Emeria ~ lock down all colors / Archangel of Thune ~ ramp +1/+1 counters fast / Archangel of Tithes ~ lock down attacking and defending of opponents / Chancellor of the Annex ~ counter everything / Exquisite Archangel ~ extremely hard to lose / Flameblade Angel ~ return large amounts of damage back to opponents / Gisela, Blade of Goldnight ~ take next to no damage and do extremely large damage / Sublime Archangel ~ extremely large damage when creature attacks alone
  • Angel's Grace + Near-Death Experience ~ You can turn that potential lose into a win, as long as you have Near-Death Experience out on the field when you use Angel's Grace.
  • Avacyn, Angel of Hope + Worldslayer ~ Destroy all permanents other than your own!

Due to the relatively high mana-curve, I have added multiple cards to combat that specific issue; Either through adding mana, decreasing costs, or dropping cards onto the field for cheap or even free.

Such as:

Continuing with the topic of getting high mana cost cards onto the field, one can always count on the the Commander, Maelstrom Archangel, in order to drop cards onto the field for free. Which gives cards like Omniscience its time to shine! Also, cards like Planar Portal and Planar Bridge, more so the latter, are extremely useful for getting just the right card you need onto the field straight from your library.

Finally, here is a shout out to cards I think are highly underrated and should be a staple in any commander deck as well as some that are already known good staple cards, plus some specifically good for Rainbow Tribal decks:

(Side Note for the Sideboard: I don't really use a sideboard, but the cards listed above in the sideboard are just cards that have been apart of the deck at one point or another.)
