Oh The Humanity! (Competitive Alara Baby)

Commander / EDH*

Maybeboard

Creature (1)

Originally this deck was a casual human tribal brew with 36 humans and an average CC of 3.75. The basic strategy was to use Wheel of Fortune type effects and/or Hermit Druid and a couple basics to dump large amounts of humans in the graveyard for Angel of Glory's Rise, or to just swarm the board with utility creatures the old fashioned way and win the game with a glorious charge led by Marton Stromgald and Archetype of Imagination. I quickly found that despite my best efforts to build a janky tribal brew the deck was far too powerful for my LGS so I abandonded it after one week.

I eventually got involved with cEDH and learned alot about how to build a truly competitive deck. After tinkering with Splinter Twin and Boonweaver Giant in other decks I came to the realization that my old alara baby human tribal deck had some competitive potential if I trimmed alot of fat from the build and added these combos. While doing some research I came across Kahno's Sliver Queen Boonweaver/kiki-Pod combo decklist and merged my human tribal build with it. Rather than reinvent the wheel as Kahno has done a fine job of explaning the strategy I will merely point out what a human subtheme brings to the table:

1) The Boonweaver Giant combo in this deck is very similar to Kahno's. It uses Pattern of Rebirth and a sac outlet to play all the creatures in my deck and kill the table with one of many infinite loops. However, this deck has a few different paths to assembling this combo.

A) Use Buried Alive to put Academy Rector+ Cartel Aristocrat +Angel of Glory's Rise. Then Reanimate angel to bring into play both aristoctat and rector into play. Sac rector with aristocrat to grab Pattern of Rebirth which you attach to angel. Sac angel to get Boonweaver Giant...The same scenario can be assembled with Survival of the Fittest instead of Buried Alive.

2) Instead of kiki jiki, this deck uses Splinter Twin and Village Bell-Ringer as my secondary win condition. Its a faster combo on average and more compact since I can summon Splinter Twin on command with Academy Rector.

3) I also can use Notion Thief and Winds of Change to steal every card from every hand. Winds of change shaves 2 mana off the more commonly used combo cards ( Windfall & Wheel of Fortune), which allows me to assemble the combo much sooner.

4) I can also Diabolic Intent or Eldritch Evolution Academy Rector to get a sac outlet and Pattern of Rebirth to start the boonweaver combo with just one other creature in play.

5) If all else fails I can just 1 basic Hermit Druid and mass reanimate with Angel of Glory's Rise.

Why Child of Alara ? Well having Planar Cleansing in the command zone is often very relevant. Alara baby is also great with sac outlets and this deck has many of those. This deck can also make Child of Alara 's death trigger mostly one sided by sacrificing it with Eldritch Evolution destroying everything and searching for Angel of Glory's Rise which reanimates all the humans in my graveyard. Having the ability to hit the reset button and mass reanimate against aggresive board states is simply great. All I have to do is murder a baby... (:-())
