Jab at a deck to start me off in Modern at my local shop.

I wanted something cheap but quick and thought RDW would be the way.

Quest for Pure Flame enables extremely quick burn-outs, and Shrine of Burning Rage gets huge off of burn. The two together allows this deck to hit hard and extremely fast.

alucardbelmont says... #1

If you do add Shrine of Burning Rage also consider Volt Charge helps add counters on both Quest for Pure Flame as well,

I would take out the Stone Rain and Tectonic Rift as they don't help with the Quest.

I would also consider Searing Blaze as well.

alucardbelmont says... #2

Ah re-read the end of description, so essentially you are having land destruction as a side thing as well?

May 29, 2012 12:41 a.m.

alucardbelmont says... #3

If you are trying some land destruction, I personally live adding Roiling Terrain

May 29, 2012 12:43 a.m.

Leaf-steel says... #4

I was thinking -4 Kiln Fiend +4 Shrine of Burning Rage .

Yes, land destruction is a side-theme to the burn of the deck. It allows me to stall somewhat-bad hands into better ones by not allowing my opponent to cast. And I do like the idea of a Roiling Terrain or two. I will try to squeeze for it.

I was also considering, heavily, Searing Blaze but chose against since it loses some thunder without landfall. It's still on my maybe list.

May 29, 2012 12:53 a.m.

alucardbelmont says... #5

Yea 2 Roiling Terrain could be a game finisher if you destroyed a good amount of land and sacrifice Quest for Pure Flame .

I personally like Searing Blaze because it can deal with creatures as well as burn and will always proc the Quest for Pure Flame as it deals 1 or 3 to opponent as well.. The biggest downside for me actually is not the landfall but that the opponent needs to have a creature on the field to actually cast the spell.

Also have you also considered Magma Jet ? ( iirc fifth dawn is still modern right? )

May 29, 2012 1:55 a.m.

Leaf-steel says... #6

I am going to drop two cards and definitely try the Roiling Terrain , could be great. Thank you!

Maybe use Searing Blaze a sideboard card against creature heavier decks, removing some of the land destruction?

I looked into that heavily and it is still on my maybe list. The scrying is awesome.

Swapped Surging Flame for Shrine of Burning Rage to see how it runs.

It's hard to beat;

T1; Land, Quest

T2; Land, Shrine

T3+; Burn

May 29, 2012 10:47 p.m.

alucardbelmont says... #8

Shrine of Burning Rage is so awesome in mono-red burn or even aggro, I approve.

Also its very typical as well, think Pyromancer Ascension would be a good fit in this deck? (if Volt Charge is a maybe, it would work oh so well with the Quest for Pure Flame and Shrine of Burning Rage )

Tectonic Rift is bad try Molten Rain modern uses a lot of shocklands

September 27, 2012 5:36 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #10

As I said, I'm working on trying to get Molten Rain without having to pay for it online as that's a hassle for such a small amount of money.

September 27, 2012 5:42 p.m.

benzzer853 says... #11

Oops i didn't see that what about Grim Lavamancer

September 27, 2012 5:44 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #12

He's been considered, just a but slow for the deck. I'm debating on removing Kiln Fiend and Needle Drop for something else but not sure.

maybe you could put Guttersnipe in? since you got enougth instants and sorceries to make it good use of his ability

September 27, 2012 8:09 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #15

@Ben If I had the money to spend on confidant, it'd be in the deck.

@blazer I was considering that, since it's on-curve to help be a great addition to the deck.

September 27, 2012 9:41 p.m.

since your running hardly any creatures I'd suggest Slagstorm . Also red sun zenith cause it's reusable.

September 29, 2012 1:17 a.m.

Leaf-steel says... #17

I have board wipes in the side. Volcanic Fallout and 1 Pyroclasm which I may up to 2. The card:Red Sun's Zenith is a good card, but not for my deck. I have too low of a land count for it to do anything meaningful unless I flood.

I looked at both and considered them. Maybe if I need a more creature heavy build in the future.

clausses says... #20

You might run buried ruins to get your shrines back.

October 15, 2012 7:37 a.m.

You could also run Tectonic Edge . I also like the idea of more sweepers, like Flamebreak or Slagstorm . Also Grapeshot . And Browbeat for gas. Best of Luck!!

October 15, 2012 12:11 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #22

@ clausses buried ruin is just too expensive to use for recovering a shrine. By that time I've basically lost.

@ DaemonicDraconic I could use the edge, but with my low land count it may not be too useful as I cannot use it for any of my 1-drop spells and it would suck to have in hand. I can up the post-board sweeper count however. I just need to find the perfect spells. Slagstorm is likely to go in if I do that, as it can also damage players. Grapeshot doesn't seem all too useful to me, since I'm not spamming spells often. Browbeat does seem like it could work, but I could probably find different draw that isn't based on what my opponent wants.

October 15, 2012 2:11 p.m.

Fair enough, other Draw options off the top of my head, would be Wild Guess , Reforge the Soul . Faithless Looting could be good with Pyromancer Ascension if you decide on that route. Likely already considered, but Vexing Devil is incredibly useful as a fast threat. And even 4 life for 1 mana is useful efficiency. Though it is a bit on the pricier side. Combust is also a useful sideboard, as might be Guttural Response .

October 15, 2012 2:57 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #24

I was thinking Wild Guess as for draw options. Reforge is just too risky. Vexing Devil is a good though, and I have considered it, but it's just too much letting the opponent decide and if I had a Quest for Pure Flame with counters on it my opponent would never take the damage and just deal with the creature. Combust was considered, and is still on my mind. Guttural Response is a very good thought though. I haven't heard of that card before.

GracefulDave says... #25

Pyromancer's Ascension?

October 16, 2012 1:32 a.m.

benzzer853 says... #26

why Dead/Gone ? it's not as good as Rift Bolt or Lava Spike in this case because you can't hit them in the face. Also Goblin Guide

October 17, 2012 8:24 a.m.

Leaf-steel says... #27

Pyromancer's Ascension isn't too well in this deck from my tests. I use a lot of the same cards, yes, but not in the way that it affects me so much.

@benzzer853 Dead/Gone is there to deal with creatures and is/was a place holder for Molten Rain until I get some. I just do not have the money for Lava Spike or Goblin Guide and it's a pain to get when you play as little as i do. Rift Bolt is great, yeah, I do need to get a set sometime. Perhaps not for this deck, but in general.

October 19, 2012 4:59 p.m.

CrimsonKing says... #28

Volt Charge can help you out alot.

October 21, 2012 1:33 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #29

@CrimsonKing I agree, but it's expensive for what it does. It is great because proliferate helps a lot. It's on my consideration list.

October 21, 2012 4:01 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #30

I just overhauled the deck. Same main theme, slightly different build from before.

October 21, 2012 6:46 p.m.

CrimsonKing says... #31

Volt Charge fits in your curve if you had a first turn Quest for Pure Flame . That extra counter can make all the difference. I agree that it's too slow though.

October 23, 2012 2:08 a.m.

Ohthenoises says... #32

With all of the small burn spells I think that you could do with some card draw. card:Tezzeret's Gambit, Wild Guess , Dangerous Wager , and Reforge the Soul all give you positive gain on your hand size.

October 28, 2012 3:52 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #33

I was thinking either Dangerous Wager or card:Tezzeret's Gambit but the latter is more expensive but much more effective and Dangerous Wager also benefits from being instant.

October 28, 2012 7:26 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #34

I like reforge as long as it's not a 4x. If you have it in your opening hand it's still castable by the time your hand is empty and if you topdeck it it may be better for you as it can disrupt their hand.

October 28, 2012 7:43 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #35

I have a playset of reforges around so I threw two while taking out 3x Stone Rain . There's one open slot and I'm debating between 1 more reforge or another card:Chandra's Phoenix.

October 28, 2012 10:41 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #36

I'd go phoenix personally

October 28, 2012 10:47 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #37

It's what I was leaning towards. Phoenix needs it's representation in this deck, and happily works well with reforge.

A whole lotta comments I'm don't really want to analyse, so... I'll get straight to it. Grab some ideas out of deck:benzathine-benzylpenicillin. Works like a charm and it's cheaper than this one :) And also burns like hell.

I tried Volt Charge in my burn deck , it was too slow and ofetn did not didnt synergize well with Quest For Pure Flame unless I had it in hand turn one , Instead I went with Rift Bolt which can be exiled for 1 and played without any additional resources after its time counter is removed the next turn

You disregarded Searing Blaze because of your lack of Landfall triggers, but what about Searing Blood?

Also, it is way above curve so I can't really recommend it, but Chandra's Phoenix has a nice synergy with Chandra Ablaze.
