This is my favorite Commander deck thus far. I've always loved goblins ever since I tried my hand at building a Legacy goblin deck. And I'm so happy that I was able to build a strong Commander deck in Mono-Red.

Frequently Asked Questions

In my opinion it was the most efficient way get Purphoros his triggers. The tribal already has mechanics within it that allows for a diverse toolbox. It has tutors, which Red has relatively few of. And it has tutorable answers such as Gempalm Incinerator and Tuktuk Scrapper. A lot of people seem to think that Red is just a brute force playing style, which is mostly true; but it can be slick and sly in Red's own way.
    1. Cast Purphoros, God of the Forge (Optional).
    1. Cast as many Goblins are you can.
    1. Burn the hell out of your enemies though EtB (Enters the Battlefield) triggers.

That's basically it.

This deck is totally non-reliant upon having Purphoros in the field. Sure you still have Mini-Purphoros, Impact Tremors, but you have to remember, we're playing with Goblins! And Goblins like to do what they do best; make more of themselves and attack, as soon as they can, as often as they can. While you may not need to attack 99% of the time, the option is there.
I'm not afraid of Purphoros gaining devotion and being targetable by removal. 99% of the time my meta has no answers for him regardless of devotion or not. That's probably because he's indestructible, which considerably lessens the spells out there that can get rid of him. Besides it's nice to have an indestructible blocker.

Getting There

  • Darksteel Ingot | A must for every deck, IMHO. Very sticky; will survive 99% of boardwipes.
  • Mana Crypt | 2 colorless mana for basically free. Lightning Bolting your own face is a small price. Your opponents should be well below your life total anyways. I do have a rule about not casting this until I need to use it though.
  • Ruby Medallion | What's not to love?
  • Sol Ring | Another must have; there's a reason this is banned in 1v1 Commander.
  • Hazoret's Monument | What's not to love?
  • Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx | This can be so broken with Goblins involved. I specifically reduced the number of Sorceries/Instants/Artifacts to be able to take advantage of this. This is the main target for Expedition Map when I get it.
  • Goblin Warchief | What's not to love?

  • Goblin Matron

  • Goblin Recruiter | Tutors for ANY number of Goblins. Drawback is you put them on top of your library instead of your hand. Seems fair.
  • Imperial Recruiter | Lots of viable targets, you're not restricted to Goblins
  • Moggcatcher | Tutors AND puts them onto the battlefield.
  • Sensation Gorger | Draw 4 cards if the top card of your deck is a Goblin card. Around 1/3 of the deck are Goblins so you have a good chance. The only drawback is that you dump your hand. But with Red we ususually don't hold on to cards.
  • Wheel of Fortune
  • Magus of the Wheel
  • Making Goblins & Triggering Purphoros

    If you can hit your opponent with these guys, you can put a Goblin creature card onto the battlefield... for FREE! But what if they have blockers, you ask? That's what your evasion suite is for; Goblin King (Only works if the opponent has a Mountain or Blood Moon is out), Trailblazer's Boots (Only works if the opponent has a nonbasic land, which is 99% likely), Whispersilk Cloak, and Rogue's Passage. There's also Akroma's Memorial but by the time you cast it, you won't need it for swinging with these two.

    Moggcatcher | Pretty much cast any Goblin card in your deck for 3 colorless mana.

    You can't keep a good Goblin (Or any creature) down.

  • Beetleback Chief | Makes x2 Goblin tokens, 3 triggers on cast for 6 damage.

  • Goblin Marshal | Makes x21 Goblin tokens, 3 triggers on cast for 6 damage; then dies the next turn when you don't pay the Echo cost, makes another x2 Goblin tokens for 4 damage; 10 damage total.
  • Krenko, Mob Boss | The Bossman himself, doubles your Goblin tokens each turn, a high priority target for tutors and unfortunately for counter spells as well.
  • card:Mog War Marshal | Makes x1 Goblin token, 2 triggers on cast for 4 damage; then dies the next turn when you don't pay the Echo cost, makes another x1 Goblin token for 2 damage; 6 damage total.
  • Siege-Gang Commander | Makes x3 Goblin tokens, 4 triggers on cast for 8 damage. His 2nd ability is also useful.
  • Goblin Warrens | A big ol' mana-dump. All you need are x2 expendable Goblins to start, then you'll make x3 Goblin tokens for as much as you can spend mana for it. Very dangerous when paired with Braid of Fire.
  • Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker | Technically, she only makes x1 nonlegendary creature token. But when you target another token producer like the above she can be dangerous; another high priority tutor target.
  • Splinter Twin | Kiki-Jiki Lite
  • And last but not least:

    • Grinning Ignus | Triggers for as much as you can cast him. 10 Red mana will get you 10 triggers.
    • Norin the Wary | Triggers as much as you have opponents (if your opponents do things on their turn). In a 4-man pod, potentially 8 damage per round. Very sticky, everyone will hate him.


  • Blasphemous Act | Very easy to cast considering how many creature you'll have out.

  • Star of Extinction | Get rid of someone's Command Tower and deal 20 damage to all creatures AND planeswalkers.
  • Goblin Assassin | My favorite tech. As long as you have a good amount of expendable Goblins on your battlefield and a token producer, you really shouldn't be effected much. Goblin Assassin + Beetleback Chief + Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker is a good example.
  • Vandalblast | Get rid of your OPPONENT'S artifacts.
  • Super Secret Tech, Synergies, & Interactions

    Warren Instigator + Goblin Matron

    Warren Instigator has Doublestrike, which means he hits twice. With Goblin Matron in your hand, if you successfully attack with Warren Instigator, on the first hit of the doublestrike, put down Goblin Matron . Goblin Matron needs to resolve first so you get to tutor for any Goblin card before the second hit, Beetleback Chief for example. Then on the second hit you can put down Beetleback Chief.

    Sensei's Divining Top + Madblind Mountain

    If you don't like what you see, shuffle your deck.

    Goblin Assassin | My favorite tech. As long as you have a good amount of expendable Goblins on your battlefield and a token producer, you really shouldn't be effected much. Goblin Assassin + Beetleback Chief + Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker for example.
    Mana Echoes + Cloudstone Curio + any token producer

    Near infinite colorless mana with enough Goblins and/or Goblin tokens on the battlefield. I'm considering adding Goblin Replica just make it a true infinite.

    When you absolutely must attack...

    Goblin Chieftain & Goblin King gives your horde +1/+1. Not so scary at first. But with 10 or so Goblins staring them down your brood becomes downright frightening.

    But the real force multiplier here is Coat of Arms. This will make your opponents sweat. I would be very surprised if it even makes it off the stack.

    Hellrider. Even before combat is damaged the target opponent is being burned for every maniac in your attacking force. Keep him alive. Give him Whispersilk Cloak or Trailblazer's Boots if you want to keep the party going.

    And 85% of people forget about Purphoros, God of the Forge's 3rd ability. He gives your creatures Firebreathing. Swing in, blockers are declared, a few get through, pump up your creatures before damage is assigned.

    Akroma's Memorial. This is your ticket getting through. Not everyone has the ability to block fliers. And don't forget about all the other traits it gives your horde. Can you imagine? Flying Goblins!

    Captain's Log

    I'm not sure if I like Star of Extinction. The cost is a little too high just to be able to hit card:planeswalkers. I may reinstate Chain Reaction instead. I also don't like Gamble and Throne of the God-Pharaoh, most cards I have aren't easily chuckable. I may replace them with Expedition Map or Volcanic Strength.
