All Tapped Out —July 1, 2018

I have been wanting to keep everything updated—reply to comments, update primers, update deck lists and/or art—for some time now, but life has always come first and I haven't had the time that I once had to dedicate solely to Tapped Out and to Magic.

For awhile now all of this has become more tedious, mostly because of my lack of time and prioritization of other things. I still play, and I will continue to update my decks and add new ones, but I am writing this to let everyone know that I will be doing all of that at my own pace and on my own time. That may be months later, but it will happen...if I feel the desire to do so.

I am sure I will continue deck cycling as I always have, mainly because I have been doing that routinely for years now. So you'll still see me around from time to time, sort of. Long and the short of it, thank you all for the support and inquiries over the years. Feel free to still comment and whatever else, I do see it, but I am not able to communicate as I once did. I hope you all understand.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, friend. Sorry I am just now replying, Ender666666; I'll definitely give your deck a look!

Hi great deck, I run almost the exact deck but use Krenko as a commander instead and you are right, 9 times out of 10 when he comes into play someone counters/removes him immediately. One card I have found to be exceptional with goblin token decks is Slate of Ancestry it gives a lot of late game draw if or when you bog down and need creatures to cast to feed Puphoros.

That's actually a card I have never looked into, VeryBadGuy70+! Thanks for the suggestion, friend.

I'll give that some deck testing because that seems like it could be super fun and useful.

What do you think about Conjurer's Closet?

I think I was recommended this card before Kaladesh came out and I had considered it, but now that I have Panharmonicon I feel like Conjurer's Closet is too slow.

As always though, thank you for the comment, Maizena! :)

Oh wow you've changed quite a bit on this deck. It's been a while since I last looked and now I'm gonna have to go through all the changes you made. The addition of Panharmonicon, Price of Glory, and Stranglehold definitely got my attention and I'm most definitely going to add those.

Long time no see, Gamer0298! This deck has changed dramatically since you've last seen it, for sure. I finally got the primer up and running, so if you are curious what all I have added you can check out the Change Log!

Those three are definitely strong cards to have in the deck, finally giving mono-red a little more interaction, haha. Glad to see you back and thanks for stopping by, friend!

Thanks for the suggestions, Yurip!

I actually used Extraplanar Lens for awhile, but it was always targeted by removal and caused me to be behind two turns. It was extremely frustrating getting Lens out on turn 3, going down by one land, then having Lens destroyed/exiled. That put me at getting Purphoros, God of the Forge out on turn 5 which is pretty late.

As for Quest for Pure Flame, I've tested with it quite a bit and it is good, especially considering it's a 1 drop, but it ended up being a bit too narrow with it's one-time effect. Grenzo, Havoc Raiser, on the other hand, I have not tested. I've seen him around since Conspiracy 2 spoilers were released, but never really thought he was powerful enough. I do like the Goad mechanic, so I think I will finally give him a shot and see what happens!

Again, thanks for stopping by and suggesting some good cards!

I understand about the lens and quest for pureflame. Grenzo though has some wicked defense against top deck tutors with the exile ability.

I think that Indomitable Creativity needs a place though! especially since you dont run temp with vengeance. I really like Mimic Vat too as it adds alot of depth to the board at all points in the game.

Any thoughts on Dualcaster Mage the vat and panharmonicon help him greatly!

Gamble as tutor for panharmonicon?

Hazoret's Monument seems good too or perhaps Ruby Medallion?

Finally what about Goblin Offensive for dumping mana from mana echoes.

Thanks for your time!

I've run most of these in the past and over time moved away from them. Both Mimic Vat and Indomitable Creativity are too off the beaten path for the play style I have when piloting the deck. Both are good cards for decks like this, but just not up my alley.

Dualcaster Mage was in an earlier rendition of this deck, but since my focus is more on creatures/enchantments I have taken it out.

I would love Gamble, but my tutor targets are combo pieces and I don't really have recursion in case I have to discard that piece.

Ruby Medallion was another previously included card. As for that and Hazoret's Monument, both are good cards but since my CMC is so low at this point I just don't find them super necessary.

Goblin Offensive was of course part of my original build, but throughout the development of this deck I have moved to appreciate a closer ratio between CMC and goblin and prefer that 1:1 rather than 1:4 that the cheapest Offensive I could cast.

Again, Yurip, thanks for the comments! All of which are great choices, but just not the direction I am aiming for with this build!

Love the deck. I built a budget Purphoros deck during a friends $100 challenge but I'm looking to upgrade it, and this is exactly what I was looking for. While a lot of your synergies were the same as mine, there's a handful of cards I ran and wanted to hear what you thought.

Arms Dealer, Dictate of the Twin Gods, Forgotten Cave, Furnace of Rath, Goblin Lookout, Goblin Offensive, Goblin Rally, Goblin Wizard, Norin the Wary, Skirk Fire Marshal, Smoldering Crater, Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle, Fanatic of Mogis

freakingShane says... #13

Thanks for the comment, rkjunior! And a lot of these cards have been in and out or have been considered, haha. Great minds think alike, right? I (not too long ago) took out Goblin Offensive and Goblin Rally because of their costs and because ETB generation has more synergy with Panharmonicon.

Goblin Wizard was another sad one I had to give up...as much as I loved that goofy sucker, he just wasn't efficient enough for me. Skirk Fire Marshal and Arms Dealer being similar cases in the sense that they were too self-destructive.

Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and Forgotten Cave were both here at one point, but I could not afford any lands to enter tapped, so they got kicked.

The remaining cards were all considered on and off as well, but just didn't fit as tightly as I would like. Trust me though, I have considered them all at one point! Always good to hear from another Purph player, and thanks again for your comment, friend. Praise be to Purphoros! ;D

Thanks for the feedback! I saw the note about Offensive after I posted from another comment. I'm going to work on updating my list here and there with some of your suggestions in the Primer and go from there! Love it though!

This deck looks really fun to play! I've been looking into building an aggressive deck and I really appreciate how much detail went into the Primer for this one.

I was wondering if you had any thoughts on Citadel of Pain and Price of Progress?

July 12, 2017 8:23 p.m.

freakingShane says... #17

Thanks a ton, Greenedn!

And Price of Progress can be really powerful, but does better in 1v1 Commander than in multiplayer in my opinion.

As for Citadel of Pain, I am not really familiar with that one! It looks like it could be very fun though! I could see some fun synergy with that and Manabarbs. ~Mwah ha ha~ (evil, malicious laugh)

Neheb, the Eternal seems like he'll do work in a Purphoros deck (1 Purphoros trigger = 6 red mana in the postcombat main phase), allowing you to cast even more spells to do even MOAR damage! Combine him with Aggravated Assault and he'll go infinite in a hurry.

July 13, 2017 9:34 a.m.

rkjunior says... #19

That 5CMC of Neheb seems tough. I feel like this deck wants to stay as low to the ground as possible.

July 13, 2017 11:16 a.m.

freakingShane says... #20

beninator & rkjunior:

You're both right. Neheb, the Eternal is a really good card in the 99 and as a commander. The potential combo with Aggravated Assault is also insane, but like rkjunior said, I don't really have the space for another 5 CMC card, even though it would be a good card for the deck.

This deck is built to be closer to a 1v1 Commander (French) deck, but be able to perform just as well in multiplayer Commander, and that is why I need to keep the CMC of the deck (and individual cards themselves) as low as possible.

I appreciate your comments and the suggestions, guys!

July 13, 2017 12:48 p.m.

rkjunior says... #21

freakingShane any suggestion if you were going to run it strictly as multiplayer? Worth adding some of the damage doublers? 99% of my play is multiplayer (usually 4-6 people total).

July 13, 2017 2:12 p.m.

freakingShane says... #22

@rkjunior

I'd probably go a little less focused on tribal and a little more towards token generation, for one. Only the best of the best though, so cards like Tempt with Vengeance and possibly even Descent of Dragons/Firecat Blitz.

I'd do a little bit of damage doubling with Quest for Pure Flame and Furnace of Rath probably. Sol Ring would be an automatic include. Norin the Wary and Chaos Warp would be definitely considered.

I usually play in a 3-4 player pod, so I'd basically make sure that I had enough fuel for a 6+ person pod. That means having the ramp, draw, and consistent damage on top of the low to the ground, aggro play style.

That's why I like my build though, because goblin tribal can get out of control super easy, which means that it keeps me from running out of gas early on like most other token-based decks. If I am top decking I will at least know that my goblins in play will have synergy with each other.

Why not run neheb he can assist with some token spells like goblin offensive etc then cast mogg infestation double bang

August 11, 2017 9:37 p.m.

freakingShane says... #24

Like mentioned above, Neheb, the Eternal is a really good card, but 5CMC for a turn 6+ pay off is a little too unreliable for me. It ends up being less aggro and more midrange-y.

I think he is a solid card, but I think he is a little too much of a "build-around-me" and I don't have the room for a Neheb package. Thank you for the suggestion though, Bighimmy!

Hi, freakingShane

First of all I really like your Purhporos goblin tribal deck!

As you mentioned your deck is built to be closer to a 1 vs 1 Commander (French) deck, but still I want to suggest you some of the cards for more multiplayer game strategy that imho I think you should consider to add.

Analizing your deck I see some problems in too low count of draw engines. I think you need to maximize draw power cuz in current state after several board whipes you just be run out of gas.

Card advantage:

Ramp:

  • Mana Crypt - expensive but cost all its money.

  • Ancient Tomb - nice land, cut mountain for it.

  • Herald’s Horn - was mentioned before.

Tutors:

  • Imperial Recruiter - I know it is expensive card but it can tutor 80% of all your creatures!

  • Gamble - saves me hundred of times! Offcorse it has drawback and you can discard what you was looking for, but still it is best tutor in red color.

Control & Others:

Cards I think you need to cut out:

P.S. Sorry for some grammar mistakes it was hell of amount of text to type ;-P
