Pirates are the new masters of combo...time to collect the Booty!

The longer I pondered the possibilities of Pirate combo in Commander thanks to Commander Legends, the more I fell in love with this deck concept. So jank and yet so degenerate at the same time...who doesn't want to see a Blisterspit Gremlin equipped with a Captain's Hook make Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator the pride of the seven seas as you loop-cast Mystic Speculation for the win. With so many creature options capable of hitting your opponents all at once and plenty of spells, equipment and abilities to make them an honorary pirate to decimate every opponent simultaneously, it's very difficult not to have the pieces to send the opposition to Davy Jones locker.

Just in case your opening hand isn't filled with all the treasure needed to seal the deal, there are plenty of draw and tutor options to keep you flush with all the trinkets and spells you'll need to plunder the table. I can't even begin to list all the potential combos in the deck, but the critical piece is always Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator alive and well at the helm of the Flying Dutchman, so make sure you can keep him safe while he witnesses the cannonballs fly. Among the easiest combo options is getting Reckless Fireweaver on the board and turned to an honorary pirate along with Malcolm, then resolving an artifact...resulting in cascading treasure to kill all your opponents.

While the current deck list is literally filled with lots of expensive treasure, virtually all of the creatures that enable a game-winning combo are quite budget friendly, so the deck can easily be built on a budget and still remain very lethal - if not as fast and resilient. I invite you to try your hand at piracy at its finest and give the deck a spin. Feel free to leave a comment or suggestion in case I've ignored an even better trinket or treasure from the list. Thanks for looking and happy brewing!

UPDATED 1/31/21

The longer I've continued to play with this pirate tribal concept, the less I've felt like using Grixis colors solely for the purpose of tutors truly fit the theme, so out with the Rakdos goblin berserker and in with the red goblin pirate. While there is definitely a black element to piracy the Izzet deck list is thematically more accurate, and the increased variability and continued explosiveness makes the deck less predictable, which seems about as on-brand as you can get with Pirates. Happy Brewing!
