Primer: Rabbit on Steroids

Modern Competitive

Primer: Sultai Polymorph

Just look at the card art on Polymorph. That rabbit is doing some pretty illegal shenanigans... Why wouldn't you wanna build around this edgy card?

Sultai needs some love in the Modern Competitive Scene!

With the aim to build a combo deck that can keep pace with Splinter Twin in speed and security, Sultai Polymorph is born! And I'll need all the help I can get from the TappedOut Community to make this work.

Why Play this Deck

Call me a "Hipster", but I have never enjoyed playing the top tiered decks for two reasons: enjoyment and cost. My favorite part about playing magic is the creativity and excitement that comes with building new decks. If you are looking for an archetype that is tried and true, Sultai Polymorph is not for you. But if you want to be a pioneer for a new deck that could have some potential (at least at the FNM level), for the less than HALF the price of your typical modern deck, I encourage you to keep reading!

Unlike Splinter Twin, we are not restricted to . Don't get me wrong, is a very strong color that gives you access to amazing modern staples like Lightning Bolt and Blood Moon. But, the color selection allows us to play spells that DOMINATE the early game, such as Abrupt Decay and Inquisition of Kozilek, so that we can ease into our (as early as) T4 Bomb.

Breakdown

I'm glad you have stuck with us so far, Planewalker. Here are your new tools:

THE COMBO

Token + Polymorph + Emrakul, the Aeons Torn (or your choice of fatty)

Gilt-Leaf Ambush / Adverse Conditions - These two spells were chosen as they are both instant speed (essential) and can be very defensive tools in times of need. If your opponent taps out on T3, you can punish by playing Gilt-Leaf Ambush end of turn followed by Polymorph on your T4. 4-2 split.

Polymorph - I feel like this underrated card has so much untapped potential. MUST EXPLOIT! 4 copies.

Emrakul, the Aeons Torn - The flagship Timmy card. Who doesn't love to play big-ass creatures/spells for mad cheap? I am a strong believer that everyone is a Timmy at heart... I want 2 copies in case I awkwardly have one in my hand.

CARD FIXING

Serum Visions - If we want reliability (hint: we do), then we need efficient ways to search for our combo pieces fast. Serum Visions is the reigning champion at this task. 4 copies.

Anticipate - I have also found that this card can be very useful as times as well. Don't underestimate the power of instant speed! 3 copies.

Sultai Charm - You don't want to be drawing Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, do you? This amazing utility card allows you to discard those pesky fatties without losing card advantage. Sign me up for 4 copies!

PROTECTNG THE COMBO

Dispel - Most often, you will want to wait to play Polymorph until T5 because you want to be able to protect your combo. Unfortunately, our game plan can be pretty fragile, as it can be foiled by a counterspell or even by mere spot removal. 2 copies.

Inquisition of Kozilek - This card pulls double duty in sniping pesky threats as well as protecting the combo. Easily 4 copies.

Remand - Who doesn't love to Time Walk? But seriously, if you are desperate, you can also wait until T6 to combo off and use this for protecting your combo. I want 4 copies.

PLAYER BOARD INTERACTION

Abrupt Decay - The BEST early game removal spell, hands down! I frickin' love this card, and fortunately for us, it craps on Splinter Twin as well as many other Modern bombs (Liliana of the Veil, Tarmogoyf, Blood Moon, etc.) By the time this card starts to become useless, we should have already combo'd (that's the goal, at least). Gimme 4 copies!!

Inquisition of Kozilek - Once again, a fantastic tool to derail your opponents. IoK's drawback should also not matter for the same reason as above. 4 copies!

Remand - In a tempo-style deck, this card is so powerful. The ability to essentially Silence your opponent for a turn without losing card advantage is godly. The first few turns are the most important, so let's make them count! 4 copies.

Sultai Charm - It hits most permanents besides lands, planeswalkers, and multicolored creatures. AND it allows us to discard Emrakul, the Aeons Torn? SO MUCH UTILITY. 4 copies.

In Conclusion...

To be continued...
