Commander 2018 Review —Aug. 25, 2018

Sorry this took so long to get released. I've been busy at work, with people taking vacations and me having to pick up the slack, and myself even taking the family on a vacation. So without further ado, here is my review:

Saheeli's Directive: Genesis Wave for artifacts. It also has Improvise, so we can tap our artifacts to help pay for the spell. Doesn't hit any other type of permanent like Wave does, but could get us a boatload of artifacts onto the battlefield.

Coveted Jewel: Essentially a Gilded Lotus that will draw us three cards. The biggest downfall is that if we can't block a creature, not only do we lose the Jewel, but our opponent's get to draw three cards. We can't even tap it in response because it untaps itself. Hightly doubt I will be running this myself.

Forge of Heroes: Probably my favorite card of this set for this deck. Let's Daretti get an extra loyalty counter on him after he enters. Can also be used politically with other players.

Isolated Watchtower: There's times when we have some extra mana open, and we can use that mana to possibly ramp us a little bit. Not a bad inclusion to consider.

Honorable mention goes to Treasure Nabber. We can steal mana rocks, use them on our turn, and even sacrifice them in order to prevent opponent from getting them back. While he does seem pretty good, I'm not 100% certain his home is here.

Unfortunately, these cards will not be released on MTGO until December, so I will either have to wait to start testing them out, or download Xmage again in the meantime.

Wait... he said he left this deck and magic for good, but he added Karn, Scion of Urza. Actually he changed a bunch of things recently, so maybe he is coming back.

spudman3d: I guess I forgot to announce here that yes, I am back!

But not all of the way. My budget/time only allows me to play Magic Online.

But I did rebuild him on there, and even recorded some games for my YouTube channel.

Hi guerte! Great to have you back! Do you play this deck online now? How is that working with the current meta?

I am on the start of building a daretti deck in a cEDH friends Group (opponents run very expensive competitive decks like: sisay, Narset, Nath, joira) and I am looking for inspiration in your deck.

How are the cards from dominaria working ot for you?

Guerte what would you recommend for saving Daretti in Commander? Especially against flying?!

Welcome Back My dude. The new Karn Is Nuts! Cant wait for the updates. Also are you playing Mtgo ban list or paper ban list?

BiGYrri: Yes, I am playing it online. Truth be told, I don’t really follow the meta. I just like to get it games when I can, and enjoy playing against anyone I can. Karn, Scion of Urza has been working out pretty well.

man1ac: The only thing to save him really is creature wipes, have blockers, or limit attackers. Silent Arbiter/Maze of Ith work really well together. Mycosynth Lattice and Unwinding Clock will allow you to repeat it during everyone else’s turn.

2017qx22: I’ve done that a few times and it’s definitely enjoyable.

xXBuddhaXx: I’m playing using the multiplayer list. I don’t think I can play the 1v1 version as I feel it gets pretty neutered and less explosive due to the good cards being banned.

What do u think of the New Mox Amber. I figured it made sense, since our commander is a PW, also I like the Homeward Path, because of Hellkite Tyrant issues. (omg since this deck has been reprinted there should be more of him out there with probably that dragon as a wincon....) putting it in mine asap.

Hows the Arch of Orazca ? I use the other land that gives u monarch.

Also can u tell me About Mirrorworks and ur interactions in the deck with it. all my playlists were fails. either I rather have played something else or I got it to late. always something.

xXBuddhaXx: While I would love to run Mox Amber in here, the only things that would make it active would be Daretti himself or Chandra, Flamecaller. You can't use it to power anything out, so I feel it's an almost dead card.

Arch of Orazca hasn't been bad. Granted, it costs 5 to draw one card. The downfall I see with Throne of the High City is that you will get one card out of it, then have to fight over it every turn after. Sure, you can bring it back with Crucible of Worlds, but you're not only wasting your land drop for the turn, but also the four mana required to activate it, essentially costing you 5 mana while not expanding your mana base.

Mirrorworks is always hit and miss. When I get it onto the battlefield, it'll usually make copies of mana rocks or other utility artifacts. Otherwise, I'll just pitch it to Daretti. I have a hard time cutting it from my list, but would be one of the firsts on the chopping block if something amazing came along.

Hi Guerte,

I'm building a Daretti deck and was lookin for some inspirations when i ran into your list ... and i love it ;-)

Just one question: Why playing all these fetch lands? As far as i understand the only land you can get from it is a mountain. So why not play more mountains instead?

gamer.ray: Essentially, they are used to help thin out the deck by getting rid of lands from the deck. So when you draw from Daretti, you increase the chance of drawing something useful instead of lands.

They also help reset the top of your deck in case you see something unsatisfactory while using Sensei's Divining Top.

So as far as the new c18 stuff, Reality Scramble in for Chandra seems great. Cast reality scramble and tuck daretti, put daretti in the command zone, and get a karn or ugin? Sounds pretty decent to me especially if daretti is down to one loyalty.

July 28, 2018 11:28 a.m.

Guerte says... #16

BPots6694: I honestly don’t think Reality Scramble is currently on my radar.

While it could be useful to swap Planeswalkers, swapping a good creature/artifact for one not so good in the moment could put a damper on things for us.

I will be doing a Commander 2018 review hopefully this weekend.

Guerte I was talking more of the concept of it, but I play more janky stuff in my daretti deck anyways. I'm the one who plays Madcap Experiment and gets Blightsteel Colossus off the top for no reason. There's only really a few good cards in c18 overall, been disappointed with the spoilers.

BPots6694: Hey, if they work for you, they work for you. Lol.

I agree that there isn’t many great cards in the set, but some are pretty good.

Would Mind's Eye or Tangle Wire be effective?

WizardGarm says... #20

Hi Guerte, few years ago I bought this deck as a precon when starting to play magic, and been following your list around for a while now for inspiration. Amazing deck, and fun to play.

I looked on notable exclusions though and thought there'd be more there, because I'm not sure wether or not to run the following cards:

Scroll Rackto be able to fill more artifacts in hand for Metalworker and in case you want to use Daretti's ability but not on your cards in hand Hellkite Igniter as a finisher

I would like to know your opinion on these cards.

Another problem I encounter is people using targeted or non targeted exile spells on my artifacts, how do you deal with that better?

I thought of including stuff like Phyrexia's Core or Trading Post to dodge the exile effect on important artifacts.

Thank you

Dredge4life: I’ve ran Mind's Eye in my deck before, but I felt it didn’t do enough, and at times I didn’t have mana available to draw off of it. As far as Tangle Wire goes, yes it is a viable option to run, but I feel it’s better suited for a Stax build.

WizardGarm: I haven’t really kept up with the exclusions list, as there are way too many to be listed, so I’ve only picked a couple thus far. Scroll Rack and Hellkite Igniter are fine additions, and I even ran Igniter at one point. Phyrexia's Core and Trading Post are good options for a sac outlet. However, they are a one-time use until you can untap. I’d go with a free sac outlet such as Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer, that way you can use it whenever.

Guerte: Kudos for this decklist! what about a Saheeli's Directive or a Retrofitter Foundry both seem to be really strong.

Hi! I was wondering if there was a budget deck list for Daretti? Thank you.

What about Krark-Clan Ironworks?

Electrofist: I’m hoping to do a review of C18 soon. Just gotta find the time to do so.

Manalito: I do have a budget list, but it hasn’t been updated at all. It can be found here: Daretti the Degenerate - Budget

gamer.ray I haven’t felt the need to run KCI. Usually don’t have much issues with mana. If it’s the case of having a sac outlet, I’d run Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer first as he gives protection to other artifacts.
