Back when I still played Standard I managed to get a fairly cookie-cutter monoblack devotion deck together just before RTR rotated out... and then I played it at maybe a couple of FNMs to little effect before real life swept me away for a bit. However, I still have my old deck, and it turns out that a lot of possible replacement cards (ones I didn't already have anyway) for rotated-out stuff are low-budget cards. Since I'd really like to get my hands on one of the Game Day's full-art Languishes - and get play value out of the money I spent buying MBD's shell cards in the first place - I'm thinking about running this deck at Game Day. But I need a little help to make sure I have a decent enough deck despite budget issues to hopefully squeak by into the Top 8.
Anyway, the deck:
Thoughtseize: Mandatory for obvious reasons.
2-drops:
Bile Blight
is also mandatory for obvious reasons.
Despoiler of Souls - A fairly hefty body for its cost that is also a Devotion enabler. Plus, it refuses to stay dead.
Silumgar Assassin
- basically in here because I need 2-drops and because without lifegain Pain Seer is not an option.
Sign in Blood - Card draw or a cheap burn spell if needed. 'Nuff said.
3-drops:
Master of the Feast - Every MBD deck needs big fat demons as its main attackers, and since by the time I first got this deck together Desecration Demon was rotating out this was my first choice. Yes, it provides the opponent with card advantage, but 5/5 flying on turn 3 is nothing to sneeze at. It or other creatures can be further buffed by...
Herald of Torment
Hero's Downfall is also mandatory of course.
4-drops:
Squelching Leeches
- this'd be
Erebos's Titan
x4 if I could be bothered to drop 20+ bucks on this deck. Still, good stuff and by the time Languish comes out to play it should be too big for that to kill.
5-drops:
Gray Merchant of Asphodel - it's not MBD with this card. Period. I have 3 in because I figured having 2...
Sidisi, Undead Vizier as a curve-topper would be a good idea. I was considering 4 Garys and 1 Abhorrent Overlord but decided that having 3 Garys and 2 chances to tutor Garys might be a better idea. After all, they're my most important wincon and the boost from having Sidisi out on the field would only make them more powerful.
The sideboard is kind of a work in progress since that's always been one of my weakest areas in tourney play, both building and knowing how to use it in matchups.
EDIT: This deck did /horribly/ at game day; as such I am retiring this deck and retaining this decklist for archival purposes only.
