Poof, the Magic Dragons

Modern* Dragons Mono-Red Ramp Tokens

Sideboard

Updated - 8/22/20198

After some major overhaul, I've taken this current version of this deck on the road and across the country with some travel for work. I am happily surprised with how well this has performed in a variety of Modern Meta!

It's pretty simple: burn the board until you get your dragons out and burn em to a crisp!

Updated - 7/7/2016

Put in some of the recommended cards and updated this deck as I currently have been playing it.

I'm a huge fan of themed decks, and even more so when they are effective and are capable of winning. This Dragon themed deck is pretty cool when you get Utvara Hellkite out and just completely overwhelm your opponent with 6/6 Dragon Tokens.

Main Deck Explained

Due to the high cost of getting Dragon's out, I've added some good cards to help off-set that cost while being true to the nature of Red decks and dishing out massive amounts of damage.

Creatures

Utvara Hellkite is the backbone of this deck. In order to increase your chances of getting this dragon out, I've added 4x Sarkhan's Triumph to this deck. That gives you 8 chances to get this dragon out and unleash all those Dragon Tokens.

Balefire Dragon is just one sick dragon. He basically forces your opponent to put up their creatures against yours or risk loosing so much more. The fact that this dragon is also very high power makes this a pretty lethal card.

Thunderbreak Regent is cheap and basically throws a lightning spell when he comes in to play. I've seen this card used in many Red decks and this one could likely use a couple more.

Spawn of Thraxes is a wicked fun card to use and is a pretty big Dragon to boot.

Generator Servant is great as Mana fodder, I really like this card since he allows your dragons to enter the battlefield with Haste for some swift damage.

Iron Myr is used for creature Mana-ramping.

Palladium Myr ditto.

Planeswalkers

Koth of the Hammer is the better Planeswalker of the ones I've been playing with. His ability to untap land helps with the ramping of this deck and helps get out my dragons quicker.

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon has been on my mind lately. 8 mana isn't that much of a problem with this deck and his abilities would be killer with this deck, I think. I don't have any to actually add, but I may fork out the $$ to get a couple.

Instants

Sarkhan's Triumph was already discussed, but if you happen to get Utvara in your hand, then use it to pull a different dragon ... or another Utvara and double your Dragon Token deployment!

Lightning Bolt is better than Lightning Strike but is a little more expensive ($$$ not mana), but now that I have 4x of them, they make a much better card than Strike.

Sorcery

Geosurge is great if you don't have enough Mountains on the table to get your dragons out. This is a pretty fun card since your opponent will not see it coming.

Enchantments

Dragon Tempest is great for beefing up your Dragons.

Crucible of Fire is also great for beefing up your Dragons, and also provides you with an easy sideboard replacement.

Land

Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle is not really necessary and is kind of an expensive card. I had two already so I put them in this deck for fun.

Haven of the Spirit Dragon is a recent addition and I like the ability to bring your dead dragons back to life. I haven't had to use it in game yet, but I like the idea.

Sideboard Explained

Akroma, Angel of Fury is perfect for your standard Control decks. Swapping her in will certainly take care of most problems you'll find with this deck.

Steel Hellkite was a regular in this deck a while ago. I've put him in the Sideboard with Galvanic Blast to slightly change the dynamic of this deck. These two cards (along with the Myr's) make some good combo's.

Reverberate doesn't stop a spell from effecting you, it's just a little bit of Karma for those spell-slinging opponents.

Mizzium Mortars will give you a little bit more punch if you need it.

I think the sideboard could use a little work, so comments would be appreciated if you can think of better cards to add.

Budget Considerations

I like that this deck isn't that expensive. Overall, you could get all these cards for less than $100. That being said, there are some cards that you could avoid purchasing:

Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle (about $8.00) could just be left out entirely and 2x more Mountains would be just fine.

Balefire Dragon (about $8.00) is the most expensive Dragon in this deck and could be swapped for Steel Hellkite (about $0.70) or Stormbreath Dragon (about $1.80) or Moonveil Dragon (about $2.00) or any other Dragon really :)

Both Planeswalkers could be swapped out for more Dragon's if you want to be more true to the theme of this deck. My goal in having them was to make this deck a little more well-rounded and they have worked out well for me during games so far. Chandra isn't that expensive of a card anyways, but if you wanted to take a try with Galvanic Blast you could swap her out for Steel Hellkite to get more dragons in the main deck.

Final Thoughts

I've had some fun playing this deck and I know similar ones have done well in actual competitions. I plan to work that way in the future, but in the meantime, Happy Gaming!
