Pir and Toothy - Reimagined

Commander / EDH*

Pir and Toothy helm up a different take on a commander deck. These two are mega super rad, and since plucking a foil pair from a pack, a brew is in order.

Pir calls for us to place counters on all of our permanents, which has a lot of power when built around with all the various counters-based permanents (including Planeswalkers) out there; but Atraxa already exists, and Pir may fit better in the 99 there if we were going with that angle.
Toothy calls for us to draw cards, and provides value when he "... leaves the battlefield, ..." We get value out of drawing cards and controlling when he leaves the battlefield. Oh, and since we're playing magic, we'll be drawing cards, and Toothy will get YUGE.
Together, Pir and Toothy are our primary win-condition: hit Blackjack with a Pir-grown Toothy. To get there, we'll want to put counters on Toothy, mostly by drawing lots of cards. We can gain strategic value by doing so at instant speed, and incremental value with cantrips bolted onto other effects.
Our strategy has some glaring weaknesses, though, starting with all the normal Voltron holes (ie, we need other ways to win when our commander's get shut down). Since we're looking at instant-speed card draw, we can look at activated abilities and spells - and Simic Spellslinging sounds purdy different. As a centerpiece of our core strategy, Toothy has neither innate evasion or protection. We'll need both, which may be a lot of strategic needs to fill.
Altogether, Pir and Toothy are reimagined (pun intended!) as a Simic Voltron Spellslinger deck!?!?
1. Round 1. Win! vs Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain, Queen Marchesa, and Jodah, Archmage Eternal. Marchesa used Master Warcraft to kill Jhoira with Toothy with 1 shot, then Toothy ran through the rest. Props to Consecrated Sphinx.
2. Round 2. Lose, vs Ghalta, Primal Hunger. Cantrips elevated Toothy to 20 commander damage in surprise plays, but Ghalta's army of undercosted, overpowered tramplers was too much to deal with. Consider adding more defenses.
3. Round 3. Win! vs Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign, Kestia, the Cultivator, and Lord Windgrace. Toothy ate Kestia, fueled by Pir and a variety of cantrips, and after a board wipe, he came back with a Consecrated Sphinx, protected by Inspiring Call for a solid win. Tons of card draw, and definitely want more infinite hand size.
4. Round 4. Win! vs Saheeli, the Gifted. A narrow victory over a fiery opponent, slinging Comet Storm's and Combustible Gearhulk's. Hadana's Climb   and a series of cantrips sank a massive hit at a critical moment for a win. Props to Curse of the Swine for eliminating Metalworker and Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain in one shot.

Pretty good showing this week at guys' night. Major issue: not enough infinite handsize became a consistent problem. Toothy comes down fast, and 1-CMC ramp options would make this deck fly at breakneck speeds if we wanted to get more competitive.
1. Forest out, Reliquary Tower in. Didn't realize this wasn't in here until a Tempt with Discovery resolved.
2. Release to the Wind out, Unwind in. This deck enjoys counterspells, and this one helps keep the spells flowing. Release has been stuck in hand often, with better defensive options that left Toothy intact.
3. Laboratory Maniac out, card:Dilluvian Primordial in. Lab Man wins out of nowhere, and this deck can get thin in longer games to set him up. But Primordial is fun, game altering, and a thick flyer is wanted to help beat face and clog the board.
4. Search for Azcanta  Flip out, Tezzeret's Gambit in. Search is real strong, but this deck draws so many cards that filtering is less useful. 2 cards and a proliferate for 3 generic mana and 2 life is real good, and amazing with Pir on the board.
