Phenax, God of Wins

Modern*

enter image description hereThis is a re-imagination of my RTR-THS Standard deck, but now Modern edition.

Phenax, God of Deception

  • Phenax, God of Deception is the key card of this deck. I run 3 because of the Legendary Rule only allowing one legendary permanent with the same name on the battlefield under your control at one time. I have tried running 4 back in Standard, but it did not work as well as 3 because of overdrawing the card.
  • Consuming Aberration is a all-star of the deck. Not only is this a mill activator, using a effect every time you cast a spell, while simultaneously growing itself, allowing the Consuming Aberration + Phenax, God of Deception combo mill to completely ravage your opponent's decks.

Walls

Walls with high toughness and a low mana cost are also very necessary for this deck. Since the deck is very slow and control based, aggro decks can overrun you, but with a few 1, 2, and 3 drop walls, you can shut that down. - Wall of Frost stops any creature, and also freezes it for a turn. - Wall of Vines is a solid 1 drop to stop anything with flying early on. Take that hate bears! - Overgrown Battlement ramps up your mana so that you can get your power cards out faster, as well as have an additional wall to stop your opponents aggression. - Tree of Redemption is not only a 0/13 that could tap with Phenax, God of Deception to mill for 13, but also is a blocker, and an anti-aggro, resetting your life total to 13 if you fall too low.

Other Creatures

I run 2 other Modern popular cards for creature choices. I run Scavenging Ooze and Lord of Extinction - Scavenging Ooze is a Bear, that also grows each time I mill my opponent. It starts off as anti-aggro or some early damage to keep your opponent on their toes, but eventually becomes a threat to their library as I begin to use him with Phenax, God of Deception to mill them out. - Lord of Extinction is another Consuming Aberration, except it grows with cards in my graveyard as well. I run a few removal and control spells, so my grave grows in addition to theirs. It doesn't have a effect, but it's ability to grow with my own graveyard makes it another all-star.

Clone Effects

I run multiple clone effects so that I can clone power cards such as Consuming Aberration and Lord of Extinction so that I can mill them faster. More mill, more win. - Cackling Counterpart is an Instant speed clone. That in itself is powerful. After using the original ability, I am able to Flashback for . This isn't powerful, yet it is something else to use later in the game. - Fated Infatuation is yet another Instant speed clone, but the triple blue makes it a little difficult to play. If you play it on your turn, however, it rewards you greatly. Scry two and clone for 3 mana at Sorcery speed is still powerful. - Followed Footsteps is an enchantment that will win you games. Each upkeep, get another Consuming Aberration. Power.

Control Spells

Running a few control spells helps keep you alive until your late game. Kill spells, bounces, and counters can go a long way. - Abrupt Decay destroys aggro. 2 mana to destroy a 3 CMC nonland permanent is powerful. - Far / Away is not only a bounce, but also a kill. If you aren't able to fuse because of mana shortage, then just bounce or just force a sacrifice out of your opponent. - Mana Leak is a Modern staple. It is seen in practically every deck in the format because of its power. This deck is no exception. - Maelstrom Pulse destroys anything that relies on tokens or multiples of a certain card to combo off.

Utility

I only chose to run 2 utility cards, Ghost Quarter and Illusionist's Bracers. - Ghost Quarter is another Modern power-house that practically every deck plays. Those pesky Inkmoth Nexuss won't get to stay very long with this guy around. - Illusionist's Bracers is an amazing combo when equipped to Consuming Aberration or Lord of Extinction while Phenax, God of Deception is out. The ability given to all creatures with Phenax, God of Deception is an activated ability, so giving the big power creatures in this deck a double mill is strong. I only chose to run one because it would mess up the consistency of the deck.

Final Thoughts

I would very much like any advice or suggestions so if you have any, leave them in the comments! Thank you for reading and taking the time to look at my meme of a deck!
