Persistent Petitioners: The Pesky Bois

Commander / EDH*

Welcome to my Simic Persistent Petitioners build with Momir Vig, Simic Visionary at the helm. The Goal of this deck is to get as many copies of Persistent Petitioners out as possible and Mill out everyone at the table before they can know what hit them. This write up is being written before the Ravnica Allegiance expansion has released so I will update as the deck fully comes together and will include thoughts on any changes that happen.

This deck is designed specifically to get as many Petitioners out as possible, and then gaining the most amount of value off of each step of them being cast. The first step of this plan is to get Petitioners out as quickly as possible. The first piece of the puzzle is Thrumming Stone . This is probably going to be the card most builds of this deck are going to talk about and it's no wonder why. The ripple 4 on this card is insane for this kind of deck. What is the most busted about Ripple is it casts each additional copy of Petitioner, which means the card combos with itself to keep cheating out Petitioners. It's a one card engine that can be great on it's own, but even better with some of the other shenanigans I'll talk about in the next section.
But Thrumming Stone isn't the only way we have to cheat out Petitioners. Aluren is one of the two big reasons why I wanted to go Simic for this build. If we don't have our Thrumming Stone out, this gives us an excellent way to assemble a make shift version. with either Momir Vig, Simic Visionary or Beast Whisperer out we get to draw a card for each copy of Persistent Petitioners , which can many times end up being a poor mans Ripple. Aluren also gives our Petitioners flash, so we can pull some weird combat shenanigans where we play out more petitioners on our opponents turns if we have a sudden need to mill them on their turns or assemble a small wall of chump blockers to protect ourselves. The card does give all these benefits to our opponents, but we obviously are expecting to pull more value.
Being able to untap our Petitioners as many times as we can is how we win with this deck. The two best untap tricks we have are Intruder Alarm and Paradox Engine , especially when paired with Thrumming Stone and/or Aluren . This is the major combo of the deck. If you have one of these untappers and a way to cheat out Petitioners you can constantly abuse the stack to tap your petitioners mill 12, cast a Petitioner, all petitioner's untap, tap petitioners to mill 12, cast another petitioner, untap all petitioners again etc. until you run out of petitioners to cast or you strike out on the Ripple 4.
Again, this combo is a dream scenario and won't happen every game (especially sense I am not running tutors int he deck). This is the big reason for going Green. Green has a ton of ways of untapping creatures and with some in blue, you can find little ways to make the most out of every one of your turns and your opponents turns while you wait for the full combo. Notable pieces include: Seedborn Muse , Awakening , Quest for Renewal and Dramatic Reversal .
Persistent Petitioners are obviously going to do a lot of the heavy lifting, but there is pleanty room in this deck to get even more mill value using some residual mill effects. The big two in my opinion are Drowned Secrets , and Psychic Corrosion . Drowned Secrets is great as this deck is almost entirely blue and between Aluren and Thrumming Stone we are going to be playing a lot of those spells for free. Getting to mill an additional 2 cards on a target opponent for each spell is going to snowball quickly.
Psychic Corrosion on the other hand are going to be huge for us too. This deck has some great card draw from cards like Visions of Beyond , Rhystic Study and Arcanis the Omnipotent (who takes advantage of our untaping effects) and the residual mill these two enchantments create will be huge.
Rounding out the mill package is Fraying Sanity and Mirage Mirror . The Mirror is great because it can serve as a copy of whatever the best piece of the engine is out on the battlefield to double up on effects. Almost every permanent in this deck is an excelent target for this.

So that's my Persistent Petitioners deck! I have been wanting to build a mill deck for a while and have also loved the idea of a deck with a ton of Relentless Rats or Shadowborn Apostles. When this card was spoiled, my mind went racing with ideas and I knew I had to build this deck. Let me know what you think and keep an eye out for updates as I actually get to play the deck.
