Penny Dreadful Mono Red Burn

Penny Dreadful Budget Burn

The Deck

This deck does not play as a normal burn deck. Since the only viable (I think) 1 mana burn spell is Burst Lightning , we need to play a more midrange deck to be effective. Our curve is therefore a lot higher than in a usual burn deck, and I use 8 Tormenting Voice effects to fuel my 8 madness cards and refuel my deck. Lightning Surge is a great card in the deck, basically our top end, and often end up dealing 12 damage from just 1 card.

I prefer to not run any creatures first game, to shut down all my opponents removal. 2nd and 3rd games, if the opponent does not have much interaction, the creatures, Gathan Raiders , Awaken the Ancient and Jaya Ballard, Task Mage can be great. The single Awaken the Ancient mainboard is there as a 7 dmg burn spell that sticks, and I could certainly see having more of them mainboard, as they are quite good.

This deck is by no means perfect, it is basically the first deck I've ever made without netdecking inspiration, and there is surely some changes that would greatly benefit the deck.

For those that do not know Penny Dreadful

Copied from the Penny Dreadful Subreddit:

Penny dreadful (abbreviated to pd) is an incredibly budget format meant to be played on Magic Online. How it works is that on every standard (i.e. not special products like Conspiracy) set release, I make a list of all cards that currently cost 0.01 tix online, using data gotten from MTGGoldfish. That list is posted on this sub (current list), and those cards are what's legal in the format until the next set release. Simple as that! Unlike some other price-limited formats, the only time the price information and card legality is updated are on set dates known months in advance, so you never have to worry about making a deck on Monday and having half of it become illegal on Tuesday.

Currently, we have one search engine that supports Penny Dreadful- MagiDex (thanks /u/Basicer). MagiDex is a better clone of magiccards.info, however, it's confusing if you don't know its flag system, so read the syntax guide first. Filter for just Penny Dreadful-legal cards using f:pennydreadful or f:pd flags. For those who prefer a more database-style approach, /u/strange1130 made an Excel spreadsheet with all PD-legal cards here.

When you're done building and buying your deck, save it under the "freeform" format, then hop onto the "Just for Fun" lobby, select the deck, and put "Penny Dreadful" in the comments section. If you want to chat with other PD players and see who's online, join the Penny Dreadful clan on MTGO or go to our Discord server.

Other stuff:We have a website! www.pdmtgo.comThis format was named by /u/ediblePoly, inspired by the type of trashy novel. There are currently 9,414 nonbasic cards legal in the format, including powerful cards like Treasure Cruise and Dark Ritual.Hopefully, most meta-warping cards will rotate out on their own by going up in price. If they don't, this format will have a banlist.
