- 4x Arbor Elf

- 3x Chameleon Colossus
- 3x Inferno Titan
- 2x Stormbreath Dragon
- 1x Thragtusk
Wurmlover, Molten Rain costs 1RR, which is bad for ponza. The ideal turn 2 LD spell is cast off of 2 forests and a Utopia Sprawl, a Birds of Paradise and 2 forests, etc. Getting two red on turn 2 isn't exactly what Ponza wants. In addition, we mainly target basic lands that would produce nonred mana under a Blood Moon, so that 2 damage won't happen all that often.

a turn 2 with molten rain would be forest, birds, mountain. with fetches that shouldn't be too hard. it will be easier with blood moon anyway

Wurmlover, we never want to be fetching mountains. This deck runs few enough red sources that it is hard to get there on turn two without being horribly screwed up mana wise later in the game. Fetching forests and a single non basic if any is the way to go with Ponza. I've tried to force the molten rain myself, and it just is straight worse than stone rain, as counterintuitive as it may seem.

In what case is fetching a stomping ground, or even cinder glade for late game, worse than fetching a forest? I don't mean to be stubborn, but if your point holds true, Inferno Titan is not good either.

The point is not that it's impossible to use, it's that it's harder to use for no real benefit. Stone Rain targets basic lands wherever possible. Therefore Molten Rain would do the same thing, except harder to cast. It's not that Molten Rain is that much worse than Stone Rain, it just isn't better.

There is also the idea of turn two Blood Moons, which hinders Molten Rain. If I have a hand with moon, more often then not I'm playing it turn 2. That being said on turn 3 I usually have 2-3 green mana and one red available. This is generally how I start a game(barring bad hands/draws).

I know that you're mainly going off of clayperce's list, but there are a few things about it that I personally don't really like. Primarily the 1-of Lightning Bolt. I think a Thragtusk or Obstinate Baloth would be better in that slot, shoring up burn and BGx matches along with generally helping against random aggro decks. When I play against non-black decks, I often feel like I'd rather have some other threat than a colossus against some opponents. Gaining 4-5 life really helps against aggro decks, which I think this deck has the more trouble with than against control or midrange. Another little thing that might be nit-picky is the Grafdigger's Cage in your SB. I know from experience how awful this deck is against Living End, so I'd hedge my bets and use a Relic of Progenitus in that spot rather than cage since cage does nothing against LE, while relic can still do work against dredge.
Good job picking Ponza as the deck to play though! It's done good work for me and I know you'll enjoy it!

Thanks for the input GeminiSpartanX. I agree that the 1 of bolt is a little weird. As for the creatures in that slot, I will have to have a thorough look at my options. The relic suggestion is pretty sold, I'll have to consider it.

Thanks tons for the shout-out, and again, congrats on your performance at SCG Syracuse!
As always, you raise some REALLY good points. Tbh, I haven't really thought about the Lightning Bolt much ... it's been in the deck since almost the very beginning, and I'm always happy to see it, so I've never really thought about swapping it out for something else. But now that you mention it ...
For low-CMC spells, Atarka's Command comes immediately to mind as another super-versatile option, and Nourish as a great option for the lifegain. Moving up the curve, "pre-boarding" a Kitchen Finks could be really good. Or, like you mentioned, Obstinate Baloth or Thragtusk are awesome. And depending on the meta, Huntmaster of the Fells Flip or even another Primal Command aren't terrible options either.
And on the graveyard hate, I go back-and-forth on Cage vs. Relic vs. Scavenging Ooze vs. Surgical Extraction. There's a slightly-dated-but-still-useful discussion on Cage vs. Relic here.
To both of you: Draw well!

What do you guys think about Feed the Clan in the bolt slot?
August 7, 2017 9:31 p.m.
I think it's not as good as a threat that also happens to gain you life. Thragtusk or baloth would be better.

Idk on the Swords; they're great in EDH of course but except for an odd Faeries deck, I've NEVER seen nor tried them in Modern. I know Sword of Feast and Famine was insane though back in the days when Wolf Run Ramp ran Standard, so maybe?
August 9, 2017 5:38 p.m.
Honestly, I think Sword of Light and Shadow is almost better since W/B are the only two colors that can really remove creatures effectively. War and peace seems sweet though to punish U/W players.
