Description

I built this deck as soon as I saw the spoil for Crested Sunmare. I've been testing over the last week and this is the honed form that has consistently brought forth a stampede of horses that any Rohirrim would be proud of.Every card in this deck produces life-gain either on your turn, the opponents turn, or both. The threat put forth alone by each creature on its own is pretty formidable, but once our horse lord hits the battlefield the threat increases exponentially. Authority of the Consuls is amazing in this deck. It initially slows your opponent down and allows you to swing freely at the start, then produces horses on your opponents endstep once you get Crested Sunmare out. You want to be very aggressive in attacking with this deck since the lifegain will more than make up for the damage your opponents dish out.

Playing this deck is pretty easy so I wont go into detailed explanations about the other creatures. Let me know what you think about the concept and please give me an upvote if you like the deck... it encourages me to post my deck ideas on this site :)

Updates

Before anyone suggests that I drop black, let me tell you why I will not. Black is such a strong color right now and I don't want to build a shell for Crested Sunmare that doesn't have it. For access to cards that exploit board control & life gain, It just doesn't make any sense in the current meta to exclude black. The mana base is so easy and consistent for BW that even if I didn't have any black cards in the main board, it wouldn't slow down my play. I'm sure this deck will go through many changes as I fine tune it and make it competitive, but black will always be integrated. Sorry mono-white fans ;)

I think you really need 2 drops. maybe the "vampire nighthawk" from Aether Revolt? But I really like it, looks fun!

I'd replace Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet with Anointed Procession. And somehow Gisela, the Broken Blade feels wrong but I can't say why. Else great deck, looks like fun. +1 from me.

I'd check out running 2 Mirage Mirror as you can copy your horse lord at instant speed and get double tokens and grant the lord and the mirror indestructible if they try to remove either piece for just 2 mana. Also Glory-Bound Initiate would be a good addition as its an early drop that gets in for a bunch of damage but can exert and gain lifelink to trigger your horse. I would also prioritize Archangel Avacyn  Flip over Gisela. She dies to all of the common removal spells with only 3 toughness. I know avacyn doesn't have lifelink, but a 4/4 flying vigilant threat will close out games in a hurry so the lifelink is less relevant

I feel like this wants to be a control shell but doesn't quite have all of the control elements. Missing a lot of black's efficient removal, etc.

gearturner27 - I like both Mirage Mirror and Glory-Bound Initiate for this deck. Will keep Gisela over Avacyn though. Don't know why you would say this wants to be a control shell, it's not at all the way it plays. It's a creature based life-gain midrange deck. Thanks for the other 2 suggestions though. I'll try them out.

Perhaps Felidar Sovereign in sideboard? Seems like a real finisher in some grindy matchups with board stalls. I love jank though so maybe its a far-fetched idea, lol. +1 from me, love it!

Yup gets a +1 from me, I personally will be running Anointed Processions because I <3 that card so much, but Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet also has value. If you are looking for 2 drops, Anointer Priest is a fantastic pick up as her Embalm allows her to proc herself, gaining life, and all the horses that come in, to gain more life.

Nope, this is not a strong deck. Lifelink hasn't been strong in standard for a while, it's much much better to play a lifelink-weenie hybrid. Sunmare Monument

Fun casual I guess.

I love what you've made here! This seems extremely fun! Crested Sunmare is too fun of a card for people to not brew around. I thought it read only at the end of your end step, having it say each end step is OP hah.

Have you considered Fumigate? It might kill your Crested Sunmare, but all the indestructible horses you have would really have an open board then at that point. Or, if you had 2 Sunmares out, they'd actually both survive, you'd gain a couple life, and you'd then make two horses at your end-step hahah.

I think the only part I don't like about your deck is the use of Lost Legacy in the side. I would rather have a mix or one of the following:

Doomfall, Lay Bare the Heart and/or Transgress the Mind.

I ask myself, what non-artifact card do I really care about that I need to get rid of in the new standard meta? Frankly the answer is not much.

Not really sure what could be changed in the main board, but for the sideboard what do you think about Trespasser's Curse instead of some of the removal? With all the options you have, some of that feels a little redundant, and I was thinking the curse would be more finely tuned to deal with creature heavy builds alongside Authority of the Consuls.

As it stands I see Anguished Unmaking and Cast Out being equal in strength, but while the former is cheaper, the latter can be cycled, and thus is never a dead draw. From there Lost Legacy is for combo decks or mirror match type deals where a single card makes the deck happen, and you know that card ahead of time. Is that all correct?

TheRedGoat - I think Trespasser's Curse is an excellent suggestion for my SB! It works very well in triggering horse generation and punishes WU Monument for token generation :). I'm going to put it in immediately.

Jxhook - Oh, I removed Blessed Alliance and replaced with Fatal Push. It doesn't do well against decks that go wide and I have plenty of life gain with other cards. It was a good card but Fatal Push performed better against top net decks.

What I look at are things like the top 36 of the last big event not having a single Lost Legacy anywhere. Lots of the cards I mentioned though. Dispossess is also played over Lost Legacy. that's because it can target artifacts like Heart of Kiran which is one of the more problematic artifacts in the meta. Lost Legacy is basically awful compared to the other options. I invite you to check out the decks from SCG Cincinnati so you can see for yourself. Even heavy control decks don't use Lost Legacy.

Well Noctem, there lies the difference between the two of us. You base your card selection by copying what net decks use. I look at the top net decks and brew new ideas to compete with them. Since the majority of people who play Magic lack the creativity or skills to brew, you can count on seeing those net decks all the time. No one ever knows what I'm going to play. You fail to see the answers that are already in my MB and SB that already deal with threats you mentioned that Lost Legacy doesn't hit. The ever so popular Heart of Kiran dies to my Fatal Push and 4/3 first strike flyer. So much thought goes into my builds and so little goes into your criticism. Lots of other people have made great suggestions to many of my decks which I have adopted, but I've yet to hear one good idea from you. Build a good competitive deck and let me review it, then maybe I'll give your suggestions and criticism some credibility. So far on your profile I've seen nothing that impresses me though.

Well the horse sucks in my meta, I'm only able to ever get one trigger off him before they board wipe or kill the sunmare, at least I get to keep my one token after the board wipe. I run a similar build, I don't use Aerial Responder or Gisela, the Broken Blade. I ended up using Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet and Gifted Aetherborn. I also don't have the Always Watching s, so I might put them in and see if the deck improves

You also have to remember that indestructible doesn't prevent damage, so if they somehow deal 5 damage to your indestructible horses and then kill the source of the indestructible, they will all die too. Always Watching doesn't affect tokens btw. So it would only give your main horse +1+1. That makes it less attractive for this kind of deck imo. But I suppose a 5/5 horse token is still pretty good alongside the rest.

I don't like this deck. Here is why:

1) When I sideboard, the deck becomes a crappier version of the deck.2) I have no depth other than gaining life and maybe a Brisela. 3) I have no card draw.

Suggestions:

1) Put that flash enchantment that exiles target nonland permanent until it leaves battlefield (it also has cycle)2) Include Red, specifically to add Nahiri (This adds versatility) and to sideboard Radiant Flames.3) Add Avacyn to mainboard and sideboard a couple Selfless Spirit

I love the horse card, but when I play this deck in tournament, I lose because I have no protection, not enough depth, and a sideboard that is too specific, and not powerful enough.

I like the Selfless Spirit suggestion for the SB, but none of the other stuff. This deck performs pretty well for me in my meta, but change it up as you see fit for yours :)

I'd like to suggest Bontu the Glorified. Now hear me out: Grixis Control is a very powerful deck in Standard, and I haven't seen a single one that doesn't play at least 1 copy of Hour of Devastation . That spell in itself can clear your board of horse tokens. What Bontu does in a board-wipe situation, wether it be from HoD or Bontu's Last Reckoning, is this: abuse the mana ability to drain you opponent, gain life, and fix your next draw. I'm not saying you need Bontu in your life, but it's a suggestion as a SB card for when you're up against Control (unless you already have an answer to Control I just failed to see, in which case good job and ignore little old me, lol).

i think Serene Steward is really good in a deck that heals so much, and can be an added protection from Hour of Devastation since you can buff your horses out of its range

I do have a case for running Blessed Alliance and that is it automatically flips Lone Rider  Flip and for me that is one of the main things because a 4/4 first strike, trample, lifelink needs a response almost immediately and with Blessed Alliance you can get that on turn 3 but I do keep in mind that pushing and grasping are things that exist.

It's just sad that a card that requires hoops to jump through like Lone Rider  Flip, which could cost you a card to flip no less, dies to everything. Every removal spell in the format. If a card requires you to use another card to flip it by jumping through hoops and then dies to every removal spell in the format, it's not a great card. So I would be careful about expending resources to flip it beyond passive life gain by doing what you're going to be doing anyway.

Noctem Well you don't play the card until main 2 and you have gained life and flip it at your end step. It isn't difficult to do. An Exerted Glory-Bound Initiate a single attack of Gisela, the Broken Blade or even Aerial Responder or Shambling Vent with a Always Watching on the board. Its risk reward is worth it and the cost is cheap for what you would be getting.

Right, all the examples you gave are what I would call 'passive life gain by doing what you're going to be doing anyway'. What I'm saying is, don't spend a card like blessed alliance to flip it unless there's a clear advantage (like winning the game the next turn or something). People can respond to the EOT trigger, it dies to shock, magma spray and everything else.

Noctem Yes but did you also consider Crested Sunmare has in its wording that it says 'end step' not 'your end step'? Also, I find the ability to ruin an opponents attack plan by forcing them to sacrifice a creature gain life and untap 2 creatures for 6 mana with the chance of having an addition horse and a flipped Lone Rider seems pretty favorable.

Oh yeah, lone rider and sunmare both trigger at every end step. That's why I suggested you only use Blessed Alliance to flip or create horses if it would lead to a win the next turn, because you can do it at end of the opponents second main phase to trigger both creatures. But expending cards in this way is very expensive, so if at all possible you should avoid it.

Noctem I agree. Its a win con card that lets you survive a attack and swing lethal next turn... you could have very well untapped a glory bound and an indestructible horse with the life gain you would survive and swing for 14 or even 19 if you had another horse token out next turn.

Although Blessed Alliance has great synergy with this deck, Dec & Push are the best removal package for the current meta. I tested with Blessed in the beginning stages of brewing and I can tell you definitively that your better off not including it.

Stormy101 - Both of those escalate spells are good, but not to replace existing removal. You need to be able to deal with Gods and other indestructibles so Dec is absolutely necessary and Push is just too good a spell to replace.
