War of the Spark —April 21, 2019

I'll keep this updated as more cards are spoiled.

  • Nissa, Who Shakes the World: Obviously, employing a High Tide mindset, her static ability seems good, and it is. However, the rest of her card just falls flat. Her ultimate isn't terrible, since it can catapult us to the endgame, but her plus is terrible. I haven't been a fan of the direction WotC has been going with her animating lands abilities, flavorful as they may be, and I think this is the peak of it. Vital Force made it a creature until your next turn, and she came in at 5 and popped at 6. This comes in at 5, pops at 8, and permanently makes your land a creature.

  • Nissa's Triumph: While not worth a slot in the deck as it sits, I could in reasonable confidence recommend this as a budget option in place of Three Visits or something similar. Finding two lands isn't bad, especially if you have something like Exploration out, and being able to potentially find 3 lands is huge. That can be 3 fetch lands with Lotus Cobra in play, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Deserted Temple, or any other value trio. Additionally, naturally playing Nissa, Vital Force and Nissa, Worldwaker means you have a real shot at getting the better part of the card.

  • God-Eternal Rhonas: Unlike the other two cards, I am heavily considering slotting this in somewhere. If you play it the turn you're trying to go for the win, he doubles Omnath's power, which can be great for drawing even more cards than you normally would. It also translates really well into Selvala, Heart of the Wilds, which adds mana equal to the greatest power, which should be Omnath anyway.

  • Finale of Devastation: For many of the same reasons as Rhonas, I'm strongly considering putting this in as well. It's yet another tutor, and a good one at that. When you're not going for the win right at that moment, it's a fine value tutor. However, if you're on the combo turn and have some mana to burn, you can just do it for X=10+, find whatever you want, and give Omnath a nice power boost, where it then falls in line with the Rhonas logic.

@DankMagicianD:

I've never really tested Defense Grid, but I think you might be right that it's too easy for people to potentially pay for when their mana is doubled or tripled. City of Solitude just ensures they never get the chance to respond. Granted, it's playing with fire a bit, since someone could just combo out on their own turn unimpeded if it stayed past mine.
