V3.0 - #4 Commander Deck! 554 votes! June 3, 2017 —June 3, 2017

WELL overdue update! Some of these changes might surprise some of you, but really think it will improve the deck! I am still working on getting a foil Mana Crypt so that will likely be added at some point as well.

This was a by far the biggest change the deck has made since its creation two years ago! Some of these updates are well overdue, but most are primarily to lower the average converted mana cost while also making the deck more flexible. Because there are so many changes (11 in all) I am just going to briefly explain why I added/removed each card.

Cut

  • World Breaker - High CMC and only activates on cast, so does not work with my creature tutors. It is nice that it can come back, but I found myself rarely getting use out of that.
  • Stalking Vengeance – Another on the high CMC shopping block. Also, is kind of a dead card without a sack-outlet.
  • Avenger of Zendikar – High CMC. Fun card, but often situational. I love that card, but it is casual most of the time.
  • Greenwarden of Murasa – High CMC. After play testing it for a while, I found that it was a dead draw more often than not.
  • Verdant Confluence – High CMC. Flexible card, but often had a minimal impact on the game.
  • Mina and Denn, Wildborn – Thought it was worth a try, but didn’t really do much.
  • Ulvenwald Hydra – Strange enough, it was the hardest of these cards to cut. It might come back if one of the new ones don’t work out.
  • Evolutionary Leap – With all the creatures removed, this round the chopping block.
  • Wastes – Auto-cut with the departure of World Breaker.
  • Thawing Glaciers - As many have stated, this card is more annoying than useful... it just took me a bit longer to figure it out.
  • Raging Ravine – I can’t think of a single time that turning this into a creature was relevant.

ADD

  • Cream of the Crop – This card was highly recommended by feyn_do_alduin and others, and seems to be worth a fair try! Being able to pick one of your top 5 cards to draw next seems solid.
  • Blood Moon – Solid control card that hurts everyone else MUCH more then it hurts us. And no, I don’t think it is a good enough reason to include Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle.
  • Beast Within – I have been avoiding removable for a while, but my meta has taken a turn away from creature focused decks.
  • Song of the Dryads – More removal, that also knocks out commanders…
  • Krosan Gripfoil – More on the Removal train!
  • Kavu Lair – Another copy of Elemental Bond seems good to me!
  • Shaman of Forgotten Ways – Helps get Om_rath out fast, and also ends the game!
  • Nissa, Vital Force – Another card that seems good enough to try out. I am normally not a big fan of Planeswalkers in EDH, but to me she reads “If Nissa surives a turn behind your token army, you draw for days!” Also, nice that she doubles as recursion.
  • Mountain - Mountain…
  • Sheltered Thicket - Can be used to draw, as well as fetchable!
  • Nature's Lore – Ya, ya, I know! Long overdue!

PLEASE let me know what you think! I am very grateful for the support! We are still fighting for that #3 Commander stop, but it has been a tough one.

Sorry for how busy I have been this past few months. I promise I do read every comment, but it is difficult to respond right away sometime. Your feedback and support really does mean a lot though!

VexenX: I definitely approve of the changes. I dropped my Seasons Past/Praetor's Counsel/Gratuitous Violence slot for Splendid Reclamation. I think I may also adopt your change of a Wastes for a Mountain as well.

Genaroc22: I dropped Gratuitous Violence from my list as I found it wasn't really necessary to have that extra damage.

VexenX: What are your thoughts on Savage Ventmaw and Mossbridge Troll?

Ventmaw can give us a nice boost in mana to help cast Omnath or any of our other spells. The Troll seems like it could get pretty beefy and win games on his own if we have enough elementals out to tap for him.

Guerte Well im justifying keeping Gratuitous Violence now by taking out Stalking Vengeance for Ulvenwald Observer

WOO HOO!!! Just 28 votes from taking # 4 spot! lol

Thank you all so much for the support!!! How is the deck running for all those in the Om_rath Army?!

For those new to the trend, what are some of your thoughts?!?! A fresh pair of eyes is always needed and very welcome!

Don't forget to upvote guys! The support really does mean a lot to me!

VexenX: Unfortunately for me, I only get to play on Xmage at the moment. Haven't had the time to show off the newly pimped deck with the custom alter and matching tokens. Hopefully I will get to soon.

I've been giving more thought to reinvesting in MTGO and recording games again, but not being able to do commentary for them is sorta holding me back.

Guerte: It is to bad you arnt playing at the moment lol. I normally play Om_rath when either someone challenges me or if I only have a short amount of time to play a game (it is over really fast lol). Still have not lost yet.. but I think it is only a matter of time...

I did enjoy your videos, but I understand that other things are priority. Me and my buddy might be starting up a Warmachine youtube channel.. MAYBE. He wants to drop all the cash on the equipment and have me do most of the commentary ( I do a ton of public speaking). If that happens then I might as well invest into MTGO online because the hard part is done lol

I have a Promo Azusa, Lost but Seeking on the way.. but it is not uploaded yet as a set option... How do I get that to happen???

Omnath was my first commander and cloudstone curio has been a bomb more times than I can count.

Tuskanraider: Is this mainly for getting land back? Don't get me wrong, this sounds very useful, but my games are typically really fast anyway. Are their other uses for it?

Hey! Great primer.

Was wondering what you thought of Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger as a means of slowing your opponents and helping you ramp up? I've been considering him for my Borborygmos Enraged deck, which has a lot of similar synergy to this.

Also, I think there is a minor mistake in the Omissions section of the primer: You have Omnath, Locus of Rage instead of Omnath, Locus of Mana listed there.

Eldrazi Monument is still in waaaaat

Guerte says... #14

Yeah VexenX, what's up with that? I thought you were dropping Eldrazi Monument? I did quite a while ago.

Genaroc22 says... #15

Same but i am tempted to try again just cause i see it here lol

VexenX says... #16

Genaroc22 and Guerte: I know I talked about removing Eldrazi Monument before, but I have been fighting it lol. If I have a fair amount of Elementals out it just ends the game. Plus it protects Omnath, Locus of Rage. It is just an alternate on its own, which seems pretty fair to me. HOWEVER, it is pretty bad when I'm behind and playing really bad.. but lets face it, when does this happen?!

On another note, now that Dark Depths is going to be more accessible thanks to "From the Vaults: Lore" I was thinking about including it... thoughts?

August 1, 2016 7:43 p.m.

Guerte says... #18

VexenX: That's understandable. When it's good, it's REALLY good. I just don't know what I'd remove to put it back in, and I'd have to buy a foil on top of that.

As far as Dark Depths goes, I'm not too sure on that. I'm not a fan of lands that don't produce mana, and I feel that if we did include it, we'd want to run Thespian's Stage alongside it. Probably Crop Rotation/Sylvan Scrying to help tutor for those lands.

You should look into testing Nature's Lore and Three Visits, I believe they are better than Farseek and Rampant Growth. Both cards give you land that doesn't enter the battle field tapped.

Genaroc22 says... #20

Bleh idk about the depths either....seems like to make it good you gotta add multiple cards but i am considering the monument again lol

August 1, 2016 10:39 p.m.

Tuskanraider says... #21

I use it to re-drop cards like avenger of zendikar, and it helps to ramp in a pinch. Mainly it's meant to help drop multiple lands when I have stuff like azusa, mina and denn, and exploration out.

Jensei says... #22

Dark Depths is more suited for Titania, not Omnath.

Eldrazi Monument is back in took out my ulamog lol

VexenX says... #24

Guerte: I know how those cuts can be so hard... Is your list update on here? I can give it a look if you want. A second pair of eyes can go a long way!

Genaroc22 and Jensei: Sounds like I caused quite the uproar with suggesting Dark Depths lol. I was not completely for real when I suggested it, I just thought the card is cool. If it tapped for a colorless mana then I woul throw it in here, but a land that screams "You better Strip Mine me" isn't needed I think.

LordGanondorf: Fantastic suggestions, and I agree 100%. However, my reasons for not adding those cards are simply for one reason... There are no foils... Lame right?! Nature's Lore is going to get in here at some point for sure, but I don't know which copy I want to get altered, plus I have been holding my breath for the past year hoping it would get reprinted in some Masters set... maybe 'Conspiracy 2' or 'Modern Masters 2017'? That would really make me happy.. New art and a foil copy would make me SOOOO happy! Now for the Three Visits....... For some reason I can't get myself to spend $50 on a slightly better Rampant Growth... Not when I still have a foil Cavern of Souls and Scapeshift to save up for! (I am also convinced AT LEAST one of the two are seeing a reprint very soon.) Oh, and on a positive one Three Visits is NOT on the reserve list! So who know!? ( I also hate that art...)

Tuskanraider: Cloudstone Curio is definitely something to think about in the future... if I start to run into some resistance and I go into late game then this card pretty much hands me the victory I think... but I have not seen the need for that quite yet.. Great suggestion thought, I will keep it in mind when times get rough lol

shub: Somehow I missed your comment in the thick of things! Thank you so much for your support! I love seeing new faces (more like User Names...). It brings a fresh perspective to everything. When it comes to our pal Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger, I think you can argue that he goes in just about every green deck ever... but only if you REALLY want to piss the board off NO MATTER WHAT!!! I have never played a Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger and not been targeted the rest of the game by EVERYONE else, even if he leaves the felt. In magic I think one thing you don't do is mess with peoples lands. If you kill them because you played cool stuff, they forgive you, but if you beat them because you made all their lands untappable, then that is just unforgivable. Now, don't make this keep you from playing him in your deck, but I think Om_rath already attracts enough hate as it is, but if they knew I had a Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger hiding in there... I don't even what to know what would happen... This deck does so well because it is like an explosive ninja, no one seeing me coming tell..they all take 100 damage a pop lol.

Genaroc22: The main problem I had with taking out the Monument is what would stop me from then removing Akroma's Memorial? I didn't what to take out both... not yet at least...

shub: Also great catch on that typo! It makes me feel better to know that people are actually reading it all! Do you have any other suggestion!? I have been wanting to improve my Primer somehow but I don't know what to do...
