OLIVIA, MISTRESS OF VAMPIRES

Olivia, Mobilized for War
I was introduced to the Commander format after picking up Magic again in August of 2012 and I decided it would be fun to make a deck of my own to play with my friends. When I first saw Olivia Voldaren and read her abilities I immediately saw her amazing potential as a commander.

I really liked the idea of a theme deck so I decided the theme of this deck would be vampires, lots and lots of vampires. I scoured the magic universe for the most amazing vampires to make Olivia the mistress of all her vampire brethren. The cards in the deck are tailored to use Olivia to her greatest potential, but also to be able to kill your opponent without her.

When you use Olivia you will have a great amount of control at your disposal. There is equipment to give her shroud, hexproof, and/or (most importantly) deathtouch. Olivia's ping works with deathtouch so she is a machine gun creature slayer. Her second ability is also good for when you don't have deathtouch, as it allows you to steal your opponents biggest threats or any indestructible creatures they may have.

Without Olivia there are several very very nasty vampires in here that you can wallop your opponent to death with such as the Necropolis Regent, Patron of the Vein, Anowon, the Ruin Sage, Yahenni, Undying Partisan, Drana, Liberator of Malakir, etc. Additionally, there are alternate win conditions via mana acceleration with cards like Caged Sun, Cabal Coffers, and Nirkana Revenant to funnel into a large X damage spell like Exsanguinate or just overwhelm you opponent with creatures.

Your objective should be to attack, attack, attack. If that doesn't work then tutor for the mana accelerators and cast a huge Profane Command, Rakdos's Return, or Bonfire of the Damned to finish off your foe.

Lastly, there's a ton of card draw to give you advantage over your opponents. I consider this deck almost totally complete. If you want some fun multiplayer or anti-blue cards check out the sideboard. Feel free to comment or upvote if you like the deck.

Shout out to Wodan whose Olivia Commander deck inspired my own.

Updates Add

Now with even more vampires!

After much testing and a good look at some of the weak spots in the deck I decided some changes were due to shore up the underperforming parts of my vampire army. Two new sets have come out since I last updated Olivia. A lot of great vampire cards have been released and it was high time that some of them started making their way into my vampire tribal.

The first cut I made was Lavaclaw Reaches and replaced it with Cinder Barrens. Lavaclaw never really fit the theme of the deck and in all the times I've had it in play I only activated it once and it died to removal. Cinder Barrens gives me the same colors of mana and isn't a mana sink.

Next I cut Shinka, the Bloodsoaked Keep and replaced it with Shadowblood Ridge. I honestly almost never use the ability on Shinka. I know it's good, but I find that most of my legendary vampires either have first strike already, or have tap abilities so they aren't attacking, or have very valuable triggered abilities and I don't attack with them anyway. I think I've maybe used the first strike ability once in maybe 50 or 60 games. I just treat it as a red mana source. Shadowblood is then superior because it filters any mana into a black and red.

I also cut Shizo, Death's Storehouse for Cabal Stronghold. This was probably the hardest land to cut, but Shizo suffered from the same issue as Shinka. I rarely used the fear ability becuase I honestly forgot about it a lot and just treated it as a black mana source. So adding Cabal Stronghold is better because I definitely pay attention to the number of swamps I have in play and in games were I have Liliana of the Dark Realms Cabal Stronghold should have the potential to create large pools of mana.

Okay that's it for the lands. Now the vampires! I've replaced Bloodgift Demon with Champion of Dusk. Bloodgift was the last non-vampire in the deck and he was there because he was a Phyrexian Arena on a flying beat stick, but I found that because of that he was a target and opponents would use spot removal on him quickly before I got his benefit. Champion is far superior because he has an ETB effect and I'm at least guaranteed one card, but I'm often amassing an army of vampires and can drop him for 3-5 cards at once. If he dies after that I don't care cause he did what i needed and refilled my hand with cards, making him far superior to bloodgift, and Olivia is now 100% vampires!

Now the harder choices. I cut Falkenrath Noble. I love Falkenrath. He's been hanging out with Olivia since the beginning. He's been loyal and drained the life of many foes. But at the 4 CMC slot there are now vampires that simply outshine him. I've put him out to pasture in my box of nostalgia cards. He is replaced by Twilight Prophet. Twilight is a powerhouse. She flies, has two extra toughness. She gives me card advantage, and drains the entire board at once instead of just one player at a time. I look forward to the plays I'll get out of her.

The last and most difficult choice is upon us. Sorin Markov is being replaced by Kazarov, Sengir Pureblood. Yes I know, Sorin is the vampire planeswalker. How could I possibly cut him from the deck? Simply put, the folks I play commander with don't have many life gain decks. His ability to put an opponent at 10 life is 1) kinda mean and 2) not an ability I have need to utilize. He's therefore a 6 drop that drains 2 life and gives me 2 life before he gets targeted by the other players on the board for fear of his minus ability. I'm putting him in the sideboard in case I play at my local card shop, but otherwise, Kazarov is a great replacement. If he's in play with Olivia he grows with her pings, and if Olivia is too expensive to cast Kazarov is a great backup commander.

I'm looking closely at Blood Artist as well and weighing replacing it with Gifted Aetherborn who has more keywords and is much more aggressive in the early game. That's all folks! Thanks for reading and comment if you wish.
