Sorcery (2)

Enchantment (2)

Creature (2)

As of 9/20/15 this deck is retired from Standard play. I will continue to list it as Standard for now but do not intend to update it further unless OGW offers suitable replacements for rotating cards. I may create a casual version without regard to format legality, suggestions for that should be directed to my userpage.

Attempt at a modified version of a deck by synonimous_. I'd been considering a warriors deck for a while; I mean, I started in Fate Reforged, it's been at least kind of a thing in Standard the whole time I've been playing this game. Plus, it's in what have thus far been my two favorite colors!

This is aggro with a twist; lifegain, solid removal and well-timed combat tricks allow it to hold up against more midrange decks that could normally handle aggro. It just charges in right under them, and control has a hard time keeping it down. Against other aggro decks it often manages to chew through their blockers until I can drop a finisher.

With the meta moving towards some faster decks in recent weeks I'm speeding this up. Works well so far.

The Team:

  • Arashin Foremost: Deathtouch won't trade. Other little dudes won't trade. Sure, block it with that Caryatid and lose a mana source! Don't block at all? This will hurt...
  • Blood-Chin Rager: "You don't have enough blockers, there..."
  • Bloodsoaked Champion: "...it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead!"
  • Brutal Hordechief: "Yeah, about those blockers...".
  • Chief of the Edge: +1 to power really, really adds up.
  • Mardu Woe-Reaper: "Nice Deathmist Raptor. It'd be a shame if something happened to it..."
  • Seeker of the Way : Kill a dude, punch his boss in the face with a big lifelinker.
  • Sorin, Solemn Visitor: Wait, he has an emblem? I didn't notice, I was too busy trying to keep track of how much life my opponent is losing and how much I'm gaining. No, I don't mind if he dies.

The Arsenal:

  • Ajani's Presence : "You thought our creatures were going to trade? I've got some bad news..."
  • Center Soul : "Your spell does not impress me. By the way, do you mind getting punched in the face next turn?"
  • Hero's Downfall: For my next act, I will make your threat disappear!
  • Secure the Wastes: These dudes heard all the cool warriors were hanging out around here and showed up uninvited.
  • Thoughtseize: Boardwipes are a lot less menacing when they're sitting in the opponent's graveyard.

Real Estate

  • Caves of Koilos: The backbone of my mana base. Essential for early fixing so I can hit on turn one and on turn two.
  • Mana Confluence : Tap for "OW!" Yeah, my mana base is a bit passive-aggressive, but adding these helped a lot. Less problematic with Urborg out.
  • Temple of Silence: Slower than I'd like, but once you've lost because your mana base hurts you or you can't draw that one card, they start to look good.
  • Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth: Swamps for everyone! Abzan players enjoy this until they realize I can take advantage of it much sooner. Helps with Confluences.

Current Issues:

  • The mirror match is pretty brutal. I need to tune the deck so I can properly side against this or even change the mainboard slightly.
  • Anger of the Gods.
  • Getting boardwiped sucks balls.
  • RDW seems to mop the floor with this. It just goes " Wild Slash , Lightning Strike, swing with all these goblins, I win."
  • There's a small chance I'll be able to play this post-rotation. Stasis Snare or maybe Swift Reckoning could replace Downfall, Shambling Vent could replace the temples, but I have seen nothing that makes up for losing Mana Confluence or Ajani's Presence and am not impressed with the Thoughtseize alternatives.

Questions and comments are welcome.

Ok night tonight. Not great, I had some terrible hands. Went 2-1-1

The first match was against Mardu tokens. My opponent seemed a little inexperienced piloting it but was able to flood the board the first game, which meant it took a long time to get through enough damage. The second game I had a lousy hand and didn't draw my sideboarded in Hallowed Moonlight or Virulent Plague before I got swarmed. Third game went to time for a draw.

Second match was against Temur Midrange. I managed to push through enough to win the first game. Had a bad hand the second one and ended up dying to Lightning Strike. The third one went much better. White protection spells and my removal proved very powerful, as I'd expect in a matchup with midrange. Won both games, though the second one got pretty dicey with my win occurring within range of a burn kill. He thankfully did not have one.

Sultai Superfriends for my third match. The sheer amount of control and draw power overwhelmed me even with no creatures on my opponents' board. Having to mulligan made it even worse. I've faced this exact deck before but had better recursion at the time. It's just not a good match for me. Lost both games.

Finally, Abzan rally. I didn't recognize it in the first game until it was too late; not that I'd have much to answer a resolved Rally anyway. Got smacked in the face for 21. But the second game went much better; I got in for lethal before my opponent could get Rally off. In the third game he did on the last turn before going to time, but I responded with Hallowed Moonlight. He agreed to concede the match to me so I'd win a couple packs.

Mono-red still sucks to face, if friendly games before the tournament are any indication. It's not really worthwhile for me to do much about that at this point.
