Oathbreaker and Kingslayer: Adriana EDH | *PRIMER*

Commander / EDH Aggro Knights Multiplayer RW (Boros) Theme/Gimmick Tokens

Brienne of Tarth is having a bad day.

She fled Westeros for Paliano, took a new name, and was recognized for her skill and swordsmanship. The ghostly Brago, King Eternal appointed her head of his Kingsguard. She served her king loyally, guarding him from the many plots and conspiracies of the High City.

But what did she find in this new land? The same betrayal, treachery, and murder that marred Westeros. In the place of Cersei Lannister was the treasonous viper Queen Marchesa. Every day, Brienne's rage burned brighter when she saw the crown on the brow of the Black Rose - a crown that the usurper had stolen at the point of a knife.

Brienne once thought that she could serve an honorable monarch. But now she knows better. All monarchs are corrupt, because their absolute power corrupts absolutely. Their power relies on deceit and oppression, and thus can never be legitimate.

Only at the edge of a sword can the people of Paliano find freedom - and Brienne of Tarth knows that it will be her sword at the throat of the Black Rose.

Long live the rebellion! A thousand voices from a thousand worlds shout as one:

Death to the Traitor Queen!

But without an army, Brienne will never triumph. Accordingly, she has traveled across the Known World to recruit only the best soldiers to her cause to fight for freedom from the Black Rose's oppressive regime.

Brimaz, King of Oreskos and Darien, King of Kjeldor have pledged their support. Their disciplined soldiers swell the ranks of Brienne's army, led by their mighty general Marton Stromgald .

The Wildlings are not accustomed to bowing to any King. Their Berserkers' Onslaught will prove invaluable in the fight ahead. Even the Giants have answered her call, led by the mighty Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs.

Of her own accord, the Archangel Aurelia, the Warleader swore fealty to Brienne. She's never been the religious type, but she welcomes the aid of these servants of the Seven in her fight against tyranny. Others among her forces worship exotic gods from Asshai and beyond, such as Iroas, God of Victory.

Although Brienne despises Cersei Lannister, she admits that Wildfire can indeed be a good distraction. The destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor led her to consider the tactical advantages of such diversions. It would be a shame if some of Paliano's architecture was lost to a Magmatic Chasm

And of course, no conquest in Westeros would be complete without the inclusion of dragons! Daenerys Targaryen personally loaned Brienne her Scourge of the Throne and Hellkite Charger to dominate the skies of Paliano: after all, she has a vested interest in destabilizing her rival Marchesa!

Brienne's army is mighty. But will they be strong enough to stand against the traitorous forces of the usurper Marchesa?

Probably not. This is Game of Thrones, after all! There are no happy endings here.

I started building this when a friend in the LPS mentioned how Adriana's art resembled Brienne. From that point, I was hooked, and I had to try and stitch together their stories. A deck quickly evolved, and I'm proud of the results, haha!

I've wanted to build a Boros token swarm deck for a while, and I like Adriana's focus on swinging wide. I know that she's gotten a bad reception on the internet as a "dumb combat" general, but I think that she is an interesting multiplayer general because she forces you to divide your attacks, rather than swinging all-out at one player.

The important consideration in building around her is that cards like Relentless Assault let you get double the bonus, since the first combat's Melee trigger continues to buff the creature during the second combat.

Sword of Feast and Famine goes infinite with Relentless Assault or Hellkite Charger, and Mentor of the Meek gives this deck some of the draw power it is desperately lacking. Boros colors do have strong removal, though I may add a Sunforger later, since I'm basically playing everything in its package already.

Infinite/pseudo-infinite combos:

Sword of Feast and Famine+Aggravated Assault/Hellkite Charger

Sword of Feast and Famine+Eldrazi Displacer+Aurelia, the Warleader

Breath of Fury+Hero of Bladehold (which allows a T3 combo-kill against any number of opponents).

Mana Echoes+Eldrazi Displacer+Beetleback Chief/Mogg War Marshal

Mana Echoes+(token generator)+X Spell

This was, quite literally, the first Adriana list on the internet. It is meant to be a fun and flavorful deck, so it probably won't end up being super competitive. It needs much more tuning, of course, and significant playtesting (not to mention that the landbase isn't finished, obviously).

I'll update this deck and its description further when I have more experience with how the deck plays. Any comments, suggestions, or +1s are appreciated! :)

We must outvote the decks headed by the wicked Queen Marchesa!

Paliano's Elite

The top decks today are like a perfect who's-who of Paliano. Nearby, Selvala and Grenzo are sulking.

Also, I am cheesed that Queen Marchesa has two more votes than Adriana, Captain of the Guard. The revolution must continue its fight! Will we let tyranny triumph over democracy?!?!?!? And of course Leovold, Emissary of Trest has more votes than either one. Because everyone loves an ambassador (except your opponents).

(Anyone who reads this should check out Lilbrudder and ElspethOfValeron's decks, because they're awesome builds around the new commanders from Conspiracy.)

So here's some ideas I have for the deck:

Would advise Zada, Hedron Grinder as a possible card in the 99, but she is more of a "build around me" sort of card.

Hope these suggestions help!

With all the hype over these three new commanders in CN2 I hope that they fight and play as good as they are to build around with :)

Shane.Allen: Technically speaking, there have been five new commanders, hehe. I do think that Grenzo is pretty linear, and that Selvala is pretty boring (I eagerly await Casey4321's deck to disprove this for me).

I've had a chance to playtest this deck online a few days ago*, and I'm liking it a lot. Adriana is definitely the least powerful of the trifecta (compared to Queen Marchesa and Leovold, Emissary of Trest) but she's proven to be fun.

*Summoning Casey4321 and ranindarkrider to ask their opinion on how it played! :)

Triton: Thanks for the suggestions! I like your thematic consistency (the missing two Theros gods and their legendary weapons) but I've found that the anthems haven't done too much for me in this deck (surprisingly!).

Haste engines are amazing of course, but if I was to add one it would probably be Urabrask the Hidden to take advantage of having more creatures, and to make my opponents' creatures ETBT. And as you know, I already have a "build-around-me" Zada deck that I'm pretty happy with :)

Heliod, God of the Sun would be generally worse than Mobilization, since the latter relies less on white mana. I am definitely thinking about adding Purphoros, God of the Forge to the deck, though. What would you cut to make space for him?

If you like the deck, +1s are appreciated :) Thanks for your comment, as always!

Daedalus19876 touch my friend, I think Selvala will be the new Mayael deck, But I think over the next six months we are going to see a ton of Adriana and the Queen Marchesa. Will they stay past six months I can't say but one thing is for sure Monarch ability is here to stay :)

August 24, 2016 7:37 p.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #10

Shane.Allen: I think that Leovold is the one who is here to stay, actually. He's a beast, and he's already making a splash in competitive circles. I don't play Stax much but he's overpowered as hell.

Daedalus19876 Well sir thank you for the update on that, I have been ignoring him to much, I must head back to the castle tower and look up this new enemy and do some homework.

Daedalus19876 says... #12

Shane.Allen: Check out Lilbrudder's amazing Oh, I'm Sorry....Did I break your concentration? deck for the most powerful take I've seen on Leovold, Emissary of Trest ;)

I think that Leovold is too strong. And although I'm not the kind of person to advocate banning on a whim, I somewhat wish he hadn't been printed. He's almost certainly the best general in the best color combination, and his ability is amazingly powerful.

When a general comes down T3 every game, demands a kill-spell within a turn cycle to prevent losing, prevents your opponents from digging for answers, and gives you a card to replace himself, that is too strong. He one-card-combos with at least 8 cards to turn him into a T3 Jin-Git. And while that's happened to me with some frequency (damn you, Animate Dead) the thing that sets Leovold apart is his consistency and low cost. It's not a stretch to say that he's probably going to be in the top three competitive generals in EDH. He's an amazing hate-bear that you have access to every game and that combos with a huge number of cards in your deck.

With a powerful early threat like Leovold, the game becomes "Do you have removal, and do I lack a counterspell T3? Otherwise, you straight-up lose. Nice playing!" That kind of degeneracy (in the game theory sense of a game that becomes a binary win/loss based on a single choice) isn't pleasant in commander when it happens with any frequency. Don't get me wrong, I love constructing powerful EDH decks, and that would be harder without powerful generals. But I would despise playing against it, because it gives a reliable degree of hand destruction that EDH has never seen.

The only card I can think up to swap out for the red god is Confusion in the Ranks, but I understand why you'd want to keep it in :)

As for the two gods, both actually tend to fit quite well into this deck at various extents imo. The weapons do have some nice anthems, so I thought they'd be some nice suggestions

August 24, 2016 8:17 p.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #14

Triton: Yeah, I'm pretty partial to Confusion in the Ranks. I assume you've seen my thoughts on the topic earlier in this comment stream, hehe. And I definitely agree with regards to the Gods. They're fantastic cards that synergize with my deck and become huge beaters when needed. I'm just having trouble finding space right now without further playtesting. Sort of a similar issue with the Weapons - they're good cards and I want to try them, but without more testing, I don't know what to cut. The eternal struggle, you know.

You're welcome to leave a +1 if you like the deck :) I appreciate the help!

August 24, 2016 8:34 p.m.

Thanks for the help on my version of Adriana, Captain of Combat. I think your deck looks sweet and your picks are all defensible so this isn't a must include by any means. I have been amazed at the quality and versatility of Chandra, Flamecaller She creates dudes that you can suicide in to achieve melee or just be huge on their own. She can perform a pseudo board wipe if there is a token army knocking at your door (or wipe post combat when your creatures have been buffed by Adriana, Captain of the Guard. She also can get you some card advantage as you throw away redundant effects and search for those powerful late game cards. I would cut Relentless Assault because it is the weakest and you do have 8 others in the deck. Let me know what you think!

JumboCommander: Chandra, Flamecaller is a very good idea that I hadn't considered before! I might try playtesting her in this list - though I think I might listen to jchudz and put it in over Scourge of the Throne (too conditional and high-mana).

shaistyone says... #18

I'll copy my comments over from another Adriana deck, they should work for you too.

"I like this, it definitely gives aggro a chance. :)

Given the aggressive nature of the deck + the anti-political bias of attacking all of your opponents, I would want more ways to protect your swarm. Like:
Rootborn Defenses - gives a free token as well
Absolute Grace - dodges a lot of spot removal + makes attacks easier
Ghostway - Eerie Interlude - Faith's Reward - sucks that they don't let you keep your tokens, but they help with mass exile/sacrifice spells

Rest in Peace - you have no graveyard interaction, so this is all upside for you
Leonin Sun Standard - can't count how many games this won for me

Number 1 Recommendation:
Reconnaissance - already the most busted card nobody runs, add in the Melee mechanic and it is just absurd. The ability to attack with EVERY creature you control EVERY combat without fear is awesome. The ability to untap after the damage step is just gravy."

Selfless Spirit is a nice way to get everything Indestructible. Know what else works for that, though? Odric, Lunarch Marshal.

I'm seeing that Flying, Haste, Vigilance, Indestructible, First Strike, and Lifelink among creatures you control. Why not let them all have these features?

Unfortunately I do not think Melee, Bushido, Battle Cry apply to his ability as they are not listed within his text. Regardless, he'd made a wonderful addition to this deck and you don't need to sacrifice him to use it.

You'd need to consult a forum / Judge for this one though. Okay, so Iroas, God of Victory's text has the same function as Menace, but it doesn't list the word "Menace". Since it is not listed, but rather implied, Odric may copy that over as well. Some people will say it won't since it's not listed. Others will say that because it is implied and is listed among the errata text over at _(Sorry, the link won't work), that it does in fact apply:

I would personally rule that it does since the errata text on Magic's own website uses the word "Menace", but in any competitive format or during FNM games, I'd consult a judge to be sure.

Anyway hope I helped!

Daedalus19876 says... #20

shaistyone: Ironically, the deck you posted those comments on was based on mine haha. But you make some good points, and let's go through them in detail :)

Rootborn Defenses (and Hold the Line and friends) are great cards, and I may add them after further playtesting. We'll have to see. They're strong contenders for a slot.

I'll avoid Ghostway and friends for now, though, since the indestructibility spells should protect my tokens and board state better. Mass exile isn't too huge of a thing at the moment, and mass sacrifice tends to be the staxy kind that will still kill my board in response.

Leonin Sun Standard: I feel like Mirror Entity just does this better for less mana. Layering plays nicely with him.

Rest in Peace definitely needs a slot, and I'm just not sure what to cut for it. Absolute Grace seems too situational and hit-or-miss here.

And Reconnaissance seems spectacular here, I agree (since my tokens often have to attack into dangerous situations to give their fellows a melee bonus). What would you cut for it?

Thanks for your interest in my deck! If you like it, you can leave a +1 :)

August 26, 2016 2:50 p.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #21

Catalog9000: The issue, though, is that I need indestructible during my opponents' turn so that my board survives a board wipe (Dolmen Gate and Iroas take care of it during combat). I also don't feel that I have a high enough density of keywords to make New!Odric reliable: although all the keywords you mentioned are in the deck, they're usually only included once or twice. And without a large number of creature tutors, I don't think that I will have the combinations I need to make him good.

You are correct, though, that Iroas has been errata' to give Menace and thus Odric does indeed share it (not that he needs to, though, since Iroas already grants it globally).

Thanks for your comment! If you like the deck, +1s are appreciated :)

Hello. I also plan to make an Adriana deck, even though she's hated by everyone. But instead of Tribe concepts, I want to focus on +1/+1 manipulation, while utilizing abilities related to thus in Adriana's colors. Any ideas that would help? I plan to use a Sunforger package as well. I just want to prove her worth as a commander.

August 27, 2016 8:40 a.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #26

BMHKain: Hello! :) This version actually doesn't have too many tribal components - I've seen some tribal soldier builds with her that are closer to that description. I'd definitely love to help, but what do you mean by +1/+1 manipulation? If you're looking for counters, that's a little tricky - but if you're more looking to abuse her temporary bonuses the best advice I can give is 1) double strike and 2) extra combat steps. This is the approach I took, and it should maximize the value of her bonuses :)

If you can clarify what you're looking for a little more, I can give you more specific advice :)

August 27, 2016 3:11 p.m.

BMHKain says... #27

@Daealus19876: I actually do want a mild token theme, but I only want it to be secondary. As for +1/+1 elements, think about Mikaeus, the Lunarch for abit. What I'm looking for are cards that can increase a variety of ways while perhaps using Shadows over Innistrad Odric to share all abilities when in a pinch. Even mono white Bolster effects and similar that care for counters are just fine. Hell, even mass stat increase via combat such as Fumiko the Lowblood, and Marton Stromgald are good. Those are major examples of what I mean. Jazal Goldmane even works as a Craterhoof Behemoth for Boros for me.

Should I provide more, or do you get what I am trying to jot down for ideas? Just asking. ;)

August 27, 2016 4:37 p.m.

BMHKain says... #28

Well, do you have any ideas? I have several so far in a forum post...

August 28, 2016 9:12 a.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #29

BMHKain: Hey! Sorry, I've been moving into college and everything's chaotic. You nailed some of the best ones, but Ajani Goldmane buffs your team, Figure of Destiny self-buffs very impressively, Bravado and Betrothed of Fire are good enchantments to exploit large numbers of creatures, Anax and Cymede can pull some weight in heroic-focussed builds, etc. If you want to work with Odric, Lunarch Marshal, I would try to include many creatures that inherently have keywords rather than spells that grant them (because without Odric, the latter aren't very impressive). Hopefully that helps!

August 28, 2016 12:22 p.m.

BMHKain says... #30

@Daedalus19876: It's unfortunate Odric isn't compatible with non-block keywords like Battalion. Odric is rejected. Ajani would be great as a flavor concept with Jazal. I also like the Auras as they make an otherwise boring deck interesting somewhat. It's disappointing that in MAGIC Story, Ajani doesn't want to planeswalk anymore after Elspeth died by THEROS bigger bad, Heliod...

Good luck with College. ;)

I've started running a couple shadow creatures in my list that I've been happy with since they do a great job carrying Sword of Feast and Famine. Soltari Champion essentially gives another melee trigger for the rest of the team, and Soltari Visionary gives me a body that can get rid of annoying enchantments like Ghostly Prison or Mirrari's Wake. Also, your Dolmen Gate should probably be a Frontline Medic since it basically fills the same role and gives you a body to attack with.

BMHKain says... #33

@jchudz: Shadow has officially intrigued me...Also, perhaps I'll make my deck creature heavy now, since I'll just simply tap everything for a physical assault anyway...

@Hipparchos: Odric is rejected as it doesn't do anything besides Core Set Abilities, and I'd like to see a great variety of compatible keywords someday; maybe as an emblem for a Planeswalker...

Oh well...

You know what I need to add to this deck? Aligned Hedron Network. It removes almost nothing of mine and wipes away all possible large blockers. Since my tokens are small but become bigger during combat, it's perfect if I cast it during my first main. In 5-player matches, all of my 1/1s become large enough that they will always survive combat.

I really like equipment in red/white as it is the one thing that color scheme does really well. Blood Moon and Recruiter of the Guard are also a really good adds. I am unsure about the other cards and think your deck would be more consistent if you supported your equipment package with tutors like Stonehewer Giant. Seriously that guy is a one man army if he survives a turn cycle. I have literally won 1v3 with just him on the board and dodged like 3 or 4 removal spells with his tutoring ability.

Sunforger is really great if properly supported with cards like Puresteel Paladin and/or Kazuul's Toll Collector. You could also add a couple more instants to your Sunforger package. Just my 2 cents.

September 23, 2016 12:11 a.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #50

Lilbrudder: My only issue is that I'm already playing an extremely equipment-focused deck with my Avacyn build, and I wanted to make this one different. Hence why I'm not playing any Wheels, when they objectively make the deck better (well, except against your masterpiece lol). Sunforger is an amazing card though, and I do want to keep it in this build.

Did anyone else accompany Brienne Of Tarth from Westeros? I'd love to know what cards equate to what characters?

I like Septa Mordane (aka Mother Of Runes) as protection. You will be swinging and that is guaranteed protection for at least one creature.

As my GoT's deck has evolved it has grown more and more mono white. As you noted, lots of tokens (Every general needs to build as army. Since my GoT's deck is centered around Daenerys Targaryen that idea fits the flavor.)

I've considered adding a second God to my deck to represent the old Gods and the new, but I already have 5 or 6 non-humans and I wanted my deck to be tribal human. (I wanted 3 dragons but again, tribal human and only so many slots.)

Plus, the other Gods in my colors didn't seem to add anything particularly interesting to the deck. I'm considering cutting the one God I'm running for, yes, another human. (I've a few ideas for Cersie and Tyrion Lannister that may or may not fit.)
