Maybeboard

Introduction:

Having started to read the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, I was sorely disappointed to see the general lack of EDH decks dedicated to the three Oath Brothers, Liu Bei, Lord of Shu, Guan Yu, Sainted Warrior, and Zhang Fei, Fierce Warrior. If EDHREC is to be believed, Liu Bei even seems to carry the dubious honour of being one of the least picked commanders!

The goal of this brew is to make a flavorful deck, that also stays somewhat competitive in a normal casual EDH circle.

One fact that seems to be somewhat overlooked about the three brothers, is that their creature types have been updated to human soldiers (Guan Yu and Zhang Fei even double down as human soldier warriors). The goal here is to use soldier tribal effects, alongside effects that boost legendary creatures, to boost the three brothers, and then exploit their horsemanship ability to dish out some serious unblockable pain. The alternative strategy is to flood the board in boosted soldier tokens and overwhelm opponents.

Interactions:

Recruiter of the Guard acts a Swiss army knife, grabbing several creatures:

As well as Ranger of Eos, who is of particular note, as he can grab the following (also covered by the Recruiter):

Throne of Empires+Scepter of Empires+Crown of Empires is pretty self explanatory, but fits the Three Kingdoms theme nicely (plus soldiers!).

Thalia's Lancers, Heroes' Podium, and Citanul Flute helps search for the two other brothers to enable Liu Bei

Catapult Master is just kind of hilarious, and helps with removal.

Peach Garden Oath is by no means a strong card, but it fits the token theme, and it would be a complete flavour fail to omit it.

Land Tax+Scroll Rack can act as a nice situational drawing engine. Using cards to get Monarch (Palace Jailer,Throne of the High City) also gives much needed draw. Having unlockable creatures should ensure you keep being the Monarch.

Eight-and-a-Half-Tails works well with cards like Crusade/Crovax, Ascendant Hero, letting you meddle in combat between other player's creatures by selectively boosting some and not others.

Yosei, the Morning Star+Miren, the Moaning Well+Emeria, The Sky Ruin can set up a complete lockdown of an opponent late game.

Snow-Covered Plains+Extraplanar Lens is a classic combo to keep all the extra mana goodness for yourself. Playing snow lands also let's us run Scrying Sheets some potential additional draw (works well with Sensei's Divining Top/Scroll Rack). Snow lands are also the coolest lands in Magic (get it?).

The rest of the deck is just more less dedicated to boosting the power of your creatures in play, or getting large amounts of mana to spawn a huge army of boosted soldier tokens. Card draw is still sadly a serious limitation of mono-white. Armistice is genuinely terrible, but it is a source of consistent draw. The 3 life to an opponent is not a major drawback, as the deck aims to finish opponents with commander damage anyway.
