Commander / EDH BG (Golgari) Combo Dredge Loam

TheRedMage

A Gitrog Monster graveyard combo deck fueled by dredge.

This deck originated from a question in the Q&A section where a number of users were advising the poster about going infinite with the gitrog. The idea is that if you have a discard outlet you can discard Dakmor Salvage to it, making The Gitrog Monster trigger because a land was put in your graveyard. Then when the trigger resolves, instead of drawing a card you dredge Dakmor Salvage back to your hand, and start the process again, milling your whole library.

Raging_Squiggle's I Can't Believe It's Not Golgari! deck also originated from the same discussion, and I am using some of the ideas he had (for example kudos to him for thinking about Haakon, Stromgald Scourge as a way to fuel your Dread Return, which was part of the wincon in the original draft of the deck), but I am trying to build the deck under a slightly different premise.

The first difference is that I want to have more synergy with discarding land. Life from the Loam is one of the most powerful dredge cards out there, and the deck can combo it with Raven's Crime and Last Rites to empty the opponents' hands.

Because of that, I want this deck to play a lot of lands - of the order of 50 - which is not really going to leave a ton of space for other cards; however, I feel this is needed as it makes it easier to keep dredging if you are trying to go off with a non-land dredge card.

Finally, I want to go "infinite" as much as possbile. I achieve this by playing an Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre and a Kozilek, Butcher of Truth . Once you are going off with Dakmor Salavage, the combo generates excess draws by milling lands when dredging. Instead of dredging, you just let those draw happen - eventually, you'll draw the Ulamog, and have the option to stop (or you can just discard it to your discard outlet and keep going off for a bit more, for example if you need to beat infinite life, or want to draw your Skirge Familiar so you can have infinite mana). If you draw a card that is not Ulamog, you can just pitch it. Eventually you will just decide you have had enough and let the Ulamog rest in your hand as you dredge away the rest of your library.

Going off in this way allows you to sculpt both your hand and graveyard to suit your needs, all while making infinite mana in the process. Eventually, you can kill your opponents with Exsanguinate or Tendrils of Agony .

Because of Ulamog, the Infinite Gyro and Kozilek, Butcher of Truth , while going off we can effectively tutor for any card in our deck, so we might want to do things differently depending on whether the opponents have pieces of disruption. Rest in Peace is, as far as I can tell, unbeatable, but most draws should be able to win through Grafdigger's Cages and effects that exile the graveyard once like Tormod's Crypt or Relic of Progenitus (in response, discard a land, go off again, and then let the ability resolve next time your graveyard gets shuffled in - hint: if your opponent has one of those don't go off with Murderer's Axe). Dryad Militant is beatable, although it's kind of a coin toss (you need to naturally draw a kill spell - if you dredge all of them you lose). Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet doesn't do anything. Anafenza, the Foremost can be a problem.

One last note - I tried to make this deck very good. It's very consistent, it's optimized, and I would be very surprised if it didn't win reliably on turn 5 (earlier with acceleration) if facing no disruption. You might have to nerf it a bit if your playgroup is not very competitive. You have been warned.

Updates Add

Back when I assembled this deck I was fixated with the idea of winning after milling your whole deck and without having infinite mana. It is sort of unnecessary to do things that way though, since the deck is capable of also sculpting the perfect hand as it goes off.

I overhauled the deck so it now just wins with Exsanguinate (I have Tendrils of Agony as a backup wincon in case something happens to my kill spell) and is built as much as possible to win through graveyard hate. I have considered playing a Defense Grid to help against counterspells, but have decided against it for the time being.

Regrowth, Nature's Spiral and Noxious Revival are also all cards I am considering, but this deck needs to play a large number of lands to function and I am not sure I want to cut down even further.
