Why Sidisi? Show

What originally drew me to Sidisi, Brood Tyrant is that her abilities definitely point in a certain direction without absolutely railroading me into a specific deck. I enjoy commanders who are clear about what they want to do and contribute to the overall gameplan of a deck, but allow enough flexibility to adapt as needed.

Try this deck if:

• You value the ability to switch gears and rapidly adapt to a changing boardstate.

• You enjoy playing with graveyard-based strategies.

• You enjoy tribal decks.

• You don't want to win the same way every time.

• You DO want to win the same way every time. (If that's your thing, it's definitely doable)

DON'T try this deck if:

• You require an absolutely laser-focused competitive warbeast of a deck.

• You enjoy turning creatures sideways.

• You are a filthy Red/White/Boros pleb.

Combo Breakdown

Because all of these combos involve things going into and out of the graveyard, I'm categorizing them by which piece provides the graveyard interaction.

Acererak Combo Show

Acererak the Archlich is an interesting addition, in that he's basically a self-contained combo. Combined with infinite mana or Rooftop Storm, you simply run any dungeon other than his own over and over until the table's dead.

Gravecrawler Combos Show

Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar - Requires any zombie on the battlefield so that Gravecrawler can be cast from the graveyard. The process is simple - sacrifice Gravecrawler to Phyrexian Altar to float . Use that mana to cast Gravecrawler from the graveyard, and repeat the process as many times as you like. This can be used to trigger any number of ETB/death triggers, such as:

• Midnight Reaper - Not infinite; massive draw.

• Plague Belcher - Kill the table.

• Undead Augur - Not infinite; massive draw.

Gravecrawler + Rooftop Storm - Combine with any free sacrifice outlet, requires any zombie on the battlefield. Sacrifice Gravecrawler to whichever outlet is chosen, then cast Gravecrawler from the graveyard for free. Provides infinite activations of whichever sacrifice outlet is used, along with infinite ETB/death triggers (see Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar section above for a full list).

• Altar of Dementia - Mill the table.

• Ashnod's Altar - Infinite .

• Carrion Feeder - Infinite counters on Carrion Feeder.

• Phyrexian Altar - Infinite mana in any combination of colors.

Havengul Lich Combos Show

Ashnod's Altar + Havengul Lich + Rooftop Storm and Havengul Lich + Phyrexian Altar + Rooftop Storm - Combine with any zombie with a good ETB for infinite uses. Sacrifice the creature to whichever altar is used to float mana. Use to activate Havengul Lich's ability, casting the creature from the graveyard for free. Beyond infinite triggers of the creature used, this will also trigger all ETB/death triggers, and if Ashnod's Altar is used produces infinite . Creatures that can be used for this include:

• Gray Merchant of Asphodel - Table killer.

• Masked Vandal - Not infinite; artifact/enchantment hate as long as the graveyard has fuel.

• Shambling Ghast - One-sided wrath and/or infinite treasure.

• Sidisi, Undead Vizier - Not infinite; tutors as long as there is exploit fodder.

• Undead Augur - Not infinite; massive draw.

• Vile Entomber - Infinite Entombs.

Havengul Lich + Rooftop Storm + Sidisi, Undead Vizier - Non-infinite, but can be used for repeated tutors. When Sidisi, Undead Vizier enters the battlefield, sacrifice her to her own exploit trigger and tutor. Havengul Lich with Rooftop Storm allows Sidisi, Undead Vizier to be cast from the graveyard for the small cost of .

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed Combos Show

Ashnod's Altar + Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Nim Deathmantle - Combine with any creature with an ETB trigger or with ETB/death triggers on the battlefield for infinite triggers. Sacrifice the creature used to Ashnod's Altar, floating . Mikaeus, the Unhallowed gives it undying, so it comes back wih a +1/+1 counter. Sacrifice it again for another , and use all floating mana to activate Nim Deathmantle, bringing the creature back with no counters. Creatures that can be used here include:

• Diregraf Horde - Infinite zombie tokens / grave hate

• Gray Merchant of Asphodel - Table killer.

• Masked Vandal - Not infinite; artifact/enchantment hate as long as the graveyard has fuel.

• Shambling Ghast - One-sided wrath and/or infinite treasure.

• Sidisi, Undead Vizier - Not infinite; tutors as long as there is exploit fodder.

• Undead Augur - Not infinite; massive draw.

• Vile Entomber - Infinite Entombs.

And if I'm using any other creature in the loop to trigger effects already on the table, any combination of these could be triggered:

• Altar of the Brood - Mill the table.

• Plague Belcher - Kill the table.

• Undead Augur - Not infinite; massive draw.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Plague Belcher - Combine with any free sacrifice outlet for infinite activation of the chosen outlet and/or infinite activations of any active ETB/death triggers. Sacrifice Plague Belcher to the chosen outlet. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed gives it undying, returning it to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter. Target Plague Belcher with its own ability giving it two -1/-1 counters. One of these will cancel out the +1/+1 counter, allowing undying to trigger again. If the goal is infinite sacrifice outlet activations, the options include:

• Altar of Dementia - Mill the table.

• Ashnod's Altar - Infinite .

• Carrion Feeder - Infinite counters on Carrion Feeder.

• Phyrexian Altar - Infinite mana in any combination of colors.

Nim Deathmantle Combos Show

Ashnod's Altar + Diregraf Horde + Nim Deathmantle - Can create either infinite or infinite zombie tokens. Sacrifice Diregraf Horde and one or both tokens to Ashnod's Altar to float for each sacrificed creature. Use this mana to activate Nim Deathmantle, returning Diregraf Horde to the battlefield. Sacrificing one zombie token per loop will result in infinite zombies, while sacrificing both will lead to infinite . Of course, any ETB/death triggers on the battlefield will also be triggered 2-3 times per loop.

Ashnod's Altar + Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Nim Deathmantle - Also listed in the Mikaeus, the Unhallowed section above. Combine with any creature with an ETB trigger or with ETB/death triggers on the battlefield for infinite triggers. Sacrifice the creature used to Ashnod's Altar, floating . Mikaeus, the Unhallowed gives it undying, so it comes back wih a +1/+1 counter. Sacrifice it again for another , and use all floating mana to activate Nim Deathmantle, bringing the creature back with no counters. Creatures that can be used here include:

Single Card Discussion

Commander Show

• Sidisi, Brood Tyrant - First draw here is color identity - , & are the god colors of EDH. Pretty much anything I would want to do is covered in these colors. Second, Sidisi points me to a graveyard strategy and helps that along without being a crutch for the deck. It's not an issue at all if my commander gets removed or even never sees the table, but if she does make an appearance, she is contributing to what the deck already does.

Creatures Show

• Acererak the Archlich - Basically a one-piece combo here.

• Carrion Feeder - Free sacrifice outlets are always powerful, and this guy being a 1-drop means that he can come out and get to work early. This can also stack up counters quickly and get in for some good damage in the early game, but is rarely relevant otherwise.

• Fell Stinger - Essentially a Sign in Blood that can be used over and over again.

• Graveborn Muse - A Phyrexian Arena for each zombie I control. One arena is good, how about 5? 10? 20?... The only limit to this is how far my nerves will allow me to push it.

• Gravecrawler - The star player, the true commander, all-around badass. I love the fact that the most dangerous card in the deck is so innocuous at first glance.

• Gray Merchant of Asphodel - Gray Merchant is so good that a single cast with average devotion is completely worth it. Multiple casts and/or high devotion, though? Stupid good. A well-timed Gray Merchant can completely turn a game around, if not win it outright.

• Havengul Lich - Does casting creatures from the graveyard sound good? It is. The often forgotten part of the Lich's ability also serves as a sort of pseudo-haste if needed. Cast Dralnu, Lich Lord from the 'yard AND flashback Demonic Tutor on top of that? Yes, please.

• Masked Vandal - Simply useful removal. Changeling makes it a zombie, so it works well here.

• Mikaeus, the Unhallowed - Provides a lord effect and destroys humans... but none of that matters. Giving all of my creatures undying turns Mikaeus into the centerpiece of multiple combos and an essential piece of the deck.

• Murderous Rider - Recyclable body and/or a decent removal option.

• Overcharged Amalgam - Probably too expensive to last, but when I saw the counter-zombie, I knew I at least had to give it a try.

• Plague Belcher - The machinegun of the deck. If I'm going into a sacrifice loop, odds are this guy's the win condition.

• Shambling Ghast - Cheap creature that can inch out some early value and turns into a great combo piece later in the game.

• Sidisi, Undead Vizier - Demonic Tutor on legs.

• Undead Augur - Solid draw engine.

• Vile Entomber - Entomb on legs.

Artifacts, Enchantments & Planeswalkers Show

• Altar of Dementia - Free sacrifice outlets are always strong, and this one can either help load my graveyard or mill opponents to disrupt their plans or simply close out the game.

• Arcane Signet - Pretty much a mindless auto-include. Solid rock. Nothing more, nothing less.

• Ashnod's Altar - One of the most notorious combo enablers in the game, and it's reputation is well deserved.

• Burgeoning - If I can keep my hand stocked up, maybe with a Life from the Loam engine running, this can provide ludicrous amounts of ramp. More mana is always welcome.

• Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet - Solid rocks.

• Exploration - Similar to Burgeoning - massive ramp as long as I can keep my hand full.

• Phyrexian Altar - Another notorious combo enabler, but I feel like people overlook how awesome this is as simple ramp and color fixing. I still run it in mad combos though...

• Rooftop Storm - Playing spells for free is stupidly strong, and even though this is limited to zombies, that barely limits the stupidity at all. I'm never sad to draw this.

• Sol Ring - It's Sol Ring.

• Soul-Guide Lantern - Really good graveyard hate.

• Talisman of Dominance/Talisman of Resilience - Cheap rocks that can get me into my colors early on.

Instants & Sorceries Show

• Abrupt Decay - It's a little limited and won't take out the huge threats, but there are always things at CMC 3 or less that need to get gone.

• Autumn's Veil - It's not Veil of Summer, but until I've got that, this is still a really solid combo protection option.

• Brainstorm - Cantrip stuff, lets me dig a bit and/or set up my next few draws.

• Buried Alive - Tutors three creatures to the graveyard, which isn't an issue at all in this deck. Reliable and solid.

• Consider - Solid instant-speed cantrip. Surveil is always good, and especially good in a deck that wants things in the yard.

• Crop Rotation - I don't run all that many important utility lands, but even if this is used exclusively to find Cavern of Souls, it's still worth it.

• Culling Ritual - Hits dorks, most rocks, etc., while also potentially giving up a huge lump of mana in the process.

• Cyclonic Rift - One of the best mass removal spells in the format. Instant speed, one-sided, hits artifacts, enchantments, planeswalkers... and can be cast without overload if it has to be done... I guess.

• Demonic Tutor - The best tutor there is, hands down.

• Diabolic Intent - Not quite Demonic Tutor, but I'd easily place it in top 5 or so.

• Dispel - Cheap counter. Instant-only, but that still covers most of the things I'd want to counter anyway.

• Drown in the Loch - Really good counter/removal. It IS conditional, which is a bit of a drawback, but the condition is so straightforward that it's almost always guaranteed to do what it needs to do.

• Entomb - Find creature, throw in graveyard. Straightforward card that does exactly what I need it to do. Solid tutor.

• Grim Tutor - Not the best tutor, but far from the worst.

• Life from the Loam - Grabs lands from the graveyard. Works well with the minor mill here (as well as the dredge from Loam itself), but it's especially good for recycling fetches and/or Myriad Landscape.

• Memory Lapse - Counters everything, and burns a draw. Probably used to protect my own combo, but can also stop an opponent.

• Nature's Claim - Cheap artifact/enchantment removal, lifegain is irrelevant.

• Negate - Decent enough counterspell in a pinch.

• Noxious Revival - Potentially free, instant-speed way to grab anything from the 'yard. Nice to have in a pinch.

• Opt - It's another cantrip.

• Pact of Negation - Free counterspell! Usually used to protect my combo and ensure a win, so the pact clause isn't even a consideration most of the time, though it still comes in handy to prevent someone else's win if they happen to catch me off guard.

• Plumb the Forbidden - Potentially huge, more likely used for quick, dirty draw. Either use is worth it.

• Ponder - Cantrip/scry/draw fixing. Just good utility.

• Reanimate - One mana and a bit of life, and it does exactly what it says. There are great options here - some might prefer a Dread Return or Victimize in the same slot, but this one's just my personal favorite.

• Sign in Blood - Quick, simple draw.

• Stifle - When you need to counter things that can't be countered through conventional means.

• Thought Scour - A rarely seen cantrip (compared to Brainstorm, Gitaxian Probe, Ponder & Preordain), but the mill can actually be an advantage here, so it works pretty well. If all else fails, use it to ruin somebody's tutor.

• Toxic Deluge - Great mass removal.

• Unearth - Many of my most important creatures fall into the 3-CMC-or-less category, so this is a solid reanimation option.

• Unmarked Grave - It's not quite Entomb, but it may just be the second-best version of that effect.

• Village Rites - Quick, cheap, dirty draw.

Lands Show

• Alchemist's Refuge - Chopping Block

• Barren Moor, Lonely Sandbar, Tranquil Thicket - Will most often be used as cantrips, works well with Life from the Loam, and can still be played as a regular land drop in a pinch.

• Castle Locthwain - Card draw stapled to a land. The cost can be a bit high, but when you absolutely need a draw, it's always worth it.

• Cavern of Souls - Making important plays uncounterable is definitely useful, but it doesn't do much to protect my combos. I've also been known to use it in a way that makes my commander appear much more important than she really is, drawing attention away from the real play.

• Mutavault - Gravecrawler requires another zombie on the field to be able to do its thing, this simply ensures that if all else fails, I've got a zombie when I need one.

• Mystic Sanctuary, Witch's Cottage - Both get me a little more use out of my graveyard. Having basic land types also makes them fetchable, which allows for some decent sneaky plays.

• Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth - It's actually really good fixing for me since this deck is so black-heavy.

Possible Additions Show

Everything I'm even considering. I know this is a lengthy list, so I've got to state here that this is a compendium of ideas I'm bouncing around. Some of the listed cards are guaranteed additions, while many of these will never earn a permanent place. I may eventually come up with a ranking system so I can differentiate between "I NEED THIS" and a simple "maybe...", but for now everything gets dumped in the same pile.

• Apprentice Necromancer - Short-term reanimator. At best, it can help me pop off a combo from the graveyard or completely turn a game around. At worst, it still provides me with two sacrifices and a utility creature, if only for a turn.

• Assassin's Trophy - Is this the best spot removal available in my colors? I'm thinking it might be...

• Bontu's Monument - A Blood Artist effect attached to cost reduction... this might be worth looking at.

• Eldritch Evolution, Neoform - Solid creature tutor. Once I've got all of the top black all-purpose tutors filled out, these go toward the top of the list if I feel like I need more.

• Imperial Seal - Not quite Vampiric Tutor, but still a damn good tutor. Normally wouldn't be in consideration on price alone, but with judge promos being affordable (at least compared to the original), I may try to get my hands on one.

• Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault - Not absolutely necessary, but if I ever find myself holding one, of course I'm making room for it.

• Misty Rainforest, Verdant Catacombs - Still need to round out my fetches.

• Morphic Pool, Undergrowth Stadium - Stupid good for EDH, gotta fit 'em in.

• Muldrotha, the Gravetide - Arguably a better commander for this deck than Sidisi, Brood Tyrant. I'm not sure I'm going to make a total swap, but I'll likely keep a Muldrotha sleeved up and ready to come in as an alternate commander.

• Mystical Tutor - Best tutor for instants or sorceries? Probably.

• Nexus of Fate - Mill protection that can serve as an additional win condition.

• Nurturing Peatland - Better painland, works well with Life from the Loam.

• Phyrexian Tower - Land-based sac outlet that can give me a little extra mana to work with, definitely something this deck wants.

• Prismatic Vista - Fetch for basics, they come in untapped... solid.

• Rhystic Study - The classic staple blue draw engine, no reason not to use it.

• Sensei's Divining Top - Consistency is key. I can't think of a deck that can't be made better by adding Top.

• Sylvan Library - One of the best draw filtering pieces available, doubly good if combined with Underrealm Lich.

• Vampiric Tutor - Ranks with Demonic Tutor for one of the best tutors ever printed, no reason I can think of not to run it.

• Veil of Summer - Excellent protection for the combo turn, can also serve as a basic cantrip in a pinch.

• Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth - Green Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, no explanation needed.

Unreleased Wants Show

All upcoming cards I may be looking at for this deck, once they're released they'll be moved into the Maybeboard proper.

• Headless Rider - Creates more sac fodder for value plays, easily creates infinite tokens.

• Necroduality - Potentially a huge value engine.

The Chopping Block Show

• Alchemist's Refuge - Most things that need to be instant are already instants. This has its uses, but if I need the space, it gets cut.
