Maybeboard

I decided recently (after one of my decks was described by another player as “the TCG equivalent of ‘Stop Hitting Yourself’”) that I should make a group hug deck. But because I’m a monster, that ended up becoming a Wheel deck featuring Nin, the Pain Artist with a wizard tribal subtheme.

My playgroup is very casual, though (Myself and two others only started playing last year and half of us use the 2017 precon decks out of the box), so I decided to keep my budget below $50. However, I also wanted a way to upgrade my deck in case I go to a different playgroup or my current one gets more competitive, so I added a list of more expensive upgrades I can add in the future (some of which I already own).

The main strategies are the basic ramp and draw to find combo pieces, sometimes using Nin for removal, and then to either

Keep opponents’ hands full as possible using Nin and spells like Jace's Archivist, Windfal, Dragon Mage, and Prosperity, which will be translated to damage with spells like Viseling, Vicious Shadows, Fevered Visions, Molten Psyche and Cerebral Vortex.

Go wide with a bunch of wizards pumped up by the likes of Docent of Perfection   and Talrand, Sky Summoner.

Go nuclear with our own card draw, translating cards we get from Nin and Arjun, the Shifting Flame into damage with Diviner's Wand, Niv Mizzet Firemind, and Psychosis Crawler.

I also included a few extra creature cards with Enrage effects like Silverclad Ferocidons and Coalhauler Swine to use as Nin fodder and dissuade attackers.

In playtesting, it feels like the wheels take a long time to get turning, but after that it really takes off. I’m thinking that I might have too many payoffs and not enough fuel (in either draw or ramp) to get things going faster, or not enough control elements to keep me safe until that happens.

I also think it’s entirely possible that I’ve split myself between too many themes to be super effective at any of them, but what can you do with a $50 budget?

Please help me streamline my game plan of forcing other players to draw and punishing them for not being able to empty their hands.
