Nicol Bolas, Game Winner

Standard*

Shane Score: 13

Description

A grixis control deck utilizing Bolas. Lots of board sweepers to push to late game where this deck shines. I am worried that i dont have enough instant removal which might make me weak to wolf run. What do u think? And how do my lands look? Im always worring about the lands. If only there were a red blue scars dual lol.

And as always +1 if you like it, thanks.

The OBjection says... #1

I'd recommend throwing in one Nephalia Drownyard or two, just to give the deck a bit more flexibility.

Drop Galvanic Blast since you're running exactly 3 artifacts. you'll never get the metalcraft. Replace it with Pillar of Flame so you can get rid of pesky undying creatures. Without Snapcaster Mage , Forbidden Alchemy won't be very helpful. Try Ponder or Index to get the cards you need. Drop a bonfire and something else for Murder .

I dont know if Olivia Voldaren is worth it in here, your wiping the field so often I cant see investing in controling their creatures being very useful. Personally I would swap out the 2 of her for a second Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker and another forbidden alchemy. another good card to consider would be snapcaster mage, flashing him in to block or giving flashback on the mana leaks or galvanic blasts could be potentially quite useful. Phyrexian spells like dismember and gut shot are worth considering as well.

@user:The%20OBjection- i was thinking about that but wasnt sure how much it would affect the manabase, i will test it out though. (whats up with 8 posts though?)

@BlckGaming- I use galvanic blast over pillar cause its an instant, and my 3 artifacts can split into 6, not to mention i could steal artifact creatures with bolas or olivia (although i will most likely take her out, compliments of Moonreader1. u have a good point with snappy/forbidden alchemy. Ill just fit snappy in.

@Moonreader1- Ive pretty much covered everything uve mentioned already lol.

Somehow on the main page it says "0 views." Anyways, I love/hate Grixis decks. +1

Lol yea i noticed that.

RockyBalbroa says... #8

You should run Slagstorm instead of Bonfire. Bonfire is only better if you have creatures yourself. I don't think you need to worry about snapcaster dying to it since it's going to be a chump blocker anyways.

Shane says... #9

Yea your probably right, i just wanted bonfire cause its awesome lol.

I tried this out a few times and it seemed I had to mulligan at least twice every time. Could be a fault with the playtester thing on the site, but it's what I saw happening. Not sure how to remedy that if it's an issue, but I thought i'd bring it up.

Take out some black land for some blue. Everything else is great, +1.

July 10, 2012 10:59 p.m.

Shane says... #12

I cant take out anymore black land for blue. I have 1 swamp and the rest of my black is duals. And i cant afford to swap red/black for blue/black especially if i switch bonfire to slagstorm. If u see a way please let me know.

July 10, 2012 11:36 p.m.

Lustrigia says... #13

I will. Also, the more I think about it the more I think that Treasure Mage would be a good idea for you. Fetch an engine then board wipe him (after he enters, you don't really have a use for him besides chumping.) Maybe Tezzeret's Gambit or Spread the Sickness to proliferate loyalty counters as well.

Those are my two pacos.

July 10, 2012 11:47 p.m.

Shane says... #14

I dont think treasure mage is really any good here. Early i play him, fetch engine. Still cant play engine untill late game. Besides i will probly get engine late game with have 3 and lots of card draw. And i dont have enough planeswalkers to abuse proliferate, tez gambit will usually just be a bad Divination .

The reason I suggested was because I have a deck very similar:

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/nicol-bolas-lives/

Seems to have worked for me. If not for you, no worries really.

July 11, 2012 12:23 a.m.

Gilded Lotus isn't in here...why? Damn thing ramps you, and still taps for three after you use it for either a Slagstorm or a Dissipate after you cast it. It color fixes and ramps bigtime so your walkers can be played earlier, sometimes two at a time.

I'm really thinking you should take out the galvanic blasts...I don't see how you'd turn them on reliably in a game.

July 11, 2012 3:12 a.m.

Shane says... #18

Well what should i use instead? Shock ? Lol

July 11, 2012 4:28 a.m.

Lustrigia says... #19

Galvanic Blasts are fine. Just take one out maybe... for Treasure Mage. Lol.

July 11, 2012 8:08 a.m.

Shane says... #20

Eh, i guess i have enough removal to do without 1 g blast. But only because i have a full art treasure mage lol

EldestKaiba says... #21

You could try a more Omniscience build, using massive field clearing with Tribute to Hunger , Go for the Throat , Doom Blade , Murder , card:Black Sun's Zenith, card:Life's Finale, possibly going for Sorin Markov , Tamiyo, the Moon Sage , and if you have room, Liliana of the Dark Realms . Island/Swamp seems to be more efficient for Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker than all of the double lands which tap immediately upon play.

Shane says... #22

At this point i really dont want to change my entire deck around just for 1 card, but perhaps that is another deck in the works.

July 12, 2012 12:35 p.m.

You still need Gilded Lotus .

July 12, 2012 1:15 p.m.

EldestKaiba says... #24

Def ! Also, Shane, not trying to change your entire deck as it is completely up to you. Sorry if i put off any bad vibes; I'm just sharing my experience.

July 12, 2012 1:17 p.m.

Shane says... #25

Lol its all good, and i just dont the lotus :P Testing has been good without it.

July 12, 2012 1:43 p.m.

Shane says... #26

Well if i did add the lotus how would i get it in here and how many. I think i could -2 Liliana of the Veil , -2 Faithless Looting , +1Sorin Markov , +1 Gilded Lotus , +2 Amass the Components Ponder ? What do u guys think?

July 12, 2012 1:54 p.m.

Shane says... #27

Note: choosing what to discard has been difficult durring testing.

July 12, 2012 1:57 p.m.

Shane says... #28

Did some real playtestung and i like where im at. There were a few games where the only lands i drew were dual lands, i think it was just bad luck though (my superfriends deck has the sane ratio of basic/nonbasic and does just fine). The only match-up i got wrecked was against RW tempered steel. Is there any enchantment hate in grixis standard?

July 13, 2012 12:42 p.m.

hairlord says... #29

+3 destroy target noncreature permanent. Other then that no, not unless you go really deep with some cute bounce spells and then counter it b4 it hits the board again. If destroying enchantments is what your after you need to be in green or white. RW tempered steel seems so far off the beaten path though that you prolly don't need to change your deck for it.

July 13, 2012 5:37 p.m.

eddyrj says... #30

personally i would keep bonfire in, even if you have no creatures, it is boardwipe plus damage for a very low cost with miracle

rockleemyhero says... #31

lotus is huge, but if you do use it you would have to make it more bolas centered, which would require adding in 1-2 more and maybe 1-2 griselbrand. kinda makes it a different deck (potentially stronger?). as far as current changes..

I would take out the treasure mage and wurmcoil package. Wurmcoil is really weak right now for a 6 drop finisher; vapor snag is too prevalent. and so is flying. However, just that call by your meta. I don't really like red sun zenith. seems to me like this is a deck in which you don't really want to tap out often. i'd replace it with the new red earthquaky/sweeper thing (but just as a 1-2 of since it doesnt hit flying.)

thinking more about it now...lotus is pretty solid for all your x sweepers. I'd throw a couple in. helps you to not "tap out" also.

murder or go for the throat is nice when they are running good black creatures. i'd throw in one of the 2.

July 14, 2012 3:54 p.m.

rockleemyhero says... #32

ps- i disagree with the idea of putting in bonfire. like someone above said, you don't have any creatures. HOWEVER, the main reason is b/c is control, its all about planning several turns in advance and predicting their moves. It's reactive, not proactive. Bonfire is a VERY proactive card; it will really throw off your game in a deck like this. Nothing more bittersweet then top decking it and feeling "forced" to play it when their might be a better play. go for Magmaquake , instant speed sweeper is insane

July 14, 2012 3:59 p.m.

Shane says... #33

Deffinitely some good ideas, ill try lotus with more bolas and griselbrand. But idk about magmaquake, it can hurt my planeswalkers.

July 14, 2012 10:14 p.m.

Shane says... #34

Did some testing with lotus but not enough to decide yet. Thinking if i do go with lotus i can side into Geist of Saint Traft against control and just win cause they wont expect that at all lol.

July 15, 2012 1:21 a.m.

Geist of Saint Traft has white in it's casting cost...

July 15, 2012 1:57 a.m.

Shane says... #36

Thats why they wont expect it. I could cast it using the Gilded Lotus or Shimmering Grotto

July 15, 2012 2:03 a.m.

Definitely drop the Faithless Looting ; while they help you filter your draws, they create card disadvantage, which is the opposite of what a control deck wants to do. Faithless Looting should only be used in decks which really want to fill their graveyard, which you don't want to do.

Made some changes using some of the ideas provided, thanks, including the addition of a sideboard. Tell me what u think.
