Sideboard Pondering —June 28, 2012

So I have been playing this deck for a couple weeks now and I am pretty happy with how it has been panning out. I am starting to play it more efficiently and more effectively.

My main problem is getting the sideboard to work properly.

Delver is still my worst matchup and I am trying to come up with a sideboard that is good against Delver but also can handle other decks. I had 3 Geist of Saint Traft in it but they never seemed to help me out when I need to play or draw them. Don't get me wrong they did kill the opponents Geist of Saint Traft but I still lost to the Delver. So thinking about it I thought that Divine Deflection could end up being a pretty versatile card.

Here is my thought process and feel free to critique my thoughts and offer a better solution.

As I said the Geist of Saint Traft is an awesome card and and effective for 6 damage. But it dies to whip flare and what not. Being as this deck is purely reactive and defensive Divine Deflection gives me an instant that is a potential win con. I thought too that it would be a great sideboard card for burn decks and also to get rid of planes-walkers since Karn Liberated if not counter is a pain in my a$$ to deal with. What do you guys think about it. Also, with all of the Bonfire of the Damneds running around it is a good answer to that card especially late game. It can also be used to kill pesky creatures. As with all of my cards it is a stall card. It also stops Wurmcoil Engine from giving the opponent lifelink.

I think it is a more versatile card that fits with the theme of the deck.

Also I was thinking of replacing the Revoke Existence and one Vapor Snag with one more Dissipate and 2 Negates. What are you guys opinions on this?

Mana leaks are not that good with cavern of souls around. The single dissipate should do you good game 1 and you can always side into more game 2. Ponder needs to be in the deck. It allows you to set up miracles and draw a card. Hinterland harbor doesn't seem that good? maybe just add a single forest that you can go fetch with evolving wilds if you need to use it to cast noxious revival. Also Banishing Stroke is an AMAZING card to have in your sideboard. It is basically anti- almost everything. I think it should be in sb as a 3 of to swap out with devastation tide which should get sided out alot with the prevalence of cards like snapcaster and restoration angel.

I had Ponder and I agree that it is good for setting up the miracles. The problem is that it is sorcery speed and Thought Scour is not. Also with Tamiyo, the Moon Sage , Thought Scour is and alternate in con.

I run both ponder and thought scour. Granted I don't run temporal mastery. I feel that it is just to situational of a card to use in the deck when i could be digging through the deck and setting up my answers. Alot of times you would draw mastery but don't even want to take an extra turn then so you end up putting it in your hand to cast later. Which isnt bad, but there are better things to be doing.

If I were you I'd run token production over any mill. Entreat the Angels , Lingering Souls , Midnight Haunting (if you don't want to splash black), Gather the Townsfolk etc. would all be worthy additions.

I don't agree that Mana Leak is a dead card. Though it won't be reprinted, counters are still strong. Side or run a couple Ghost Quarter for that threat. After leak goes, Negate or Essence Scatter are both solid counters for the format.

I'd mainboard the Oblivion Ring over dissipate. It's better costed and few decks are prepared to disenchant.

I'd rather run Thought Scour and Ponder rather than Think Twice .

Also, for those of you who don't see it, Thought Scour is a must in this deck. Why? Tamiyo, the Moon Sage 's emblem. It allows you to draw through your deck, and also deck your opponent.

However, Ponder is much better than Think Twice , so that's what it should replace.

Ponder is good but on an opponents turn I can draw a card and get a Devastation Tide or Terminus to stop an attack or draw an Entreat the Angels to get blockers. Ponder doesn't do that for me. It does set up the miracles for me but that is what Noxious Revival is for.

Example: Opponent attacks, I Noxious Revival a Terminus then play Thought Scour or Think Twice and bam there goes all their creatures. That is why Think Twice is much better than Ponder in this deck.

Ponder is a better card than Think Twice . It allows you to set up your miracles and see what's coming. What good is Think Twice ing on your opponents turn and then hoping? Maybe, play all 3 (ponder, think twice, thought scour) but don't neglect ponder.

Thought scour > ponder. Your opponent tries to swing for game, so you thought scour yourself, get a feeling of dread in graveyard, and if you don't miracle anything, flashback feeling of dread. Ponder is kinda crap in miracle, why doesn't anyone realize this?

I know it does set up the Miracles which is good but there are so many miracles that I am bound to draw one. Also, Noxious Revival can place the one i need on top to draw then use Thought Scour or Think Twice to play on an opponents turn. Also, I can Thought Scour them if they Ponder which is great to do.

oh yes. I will point out one thing to you. I think you should take out a temporal and 2 devastation tides for 3 negate. You don't want your miracles being countered, and negate is really good at that.

I havent really run into that many decks with a lot of counters in them. Or I would add them. I was thinking of sideboarding two of them
