Sideboard

Sorcery (1)

Maybeboard

Primer

This version of the Meren deck is a strict control one, constantly trying to keep opponents at low creature counts to occasionally jab away at their life totals. With many creatures with relevant ETB abilities, her EOT ability is all the more powerful and will allow a lot of action during your turn, as well as allowing the most impactful creatures to have multiple appearances.

  • play creatures that allow to sacrifice themselves, other creatures, or both, as you will need to both upgrade the Experience as well as be able to put creatures in your graveyard in order to re-trigger their abilities or save them from being exiled.
The cheaper they are, the better, and if you're able to profit from the sacrifice, even better. Spore Frog, Vampire Hexmage, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Viscera Seer and Carrion Feeder are prime cards in this deck.
  • Evoke is awesome with Meren in play, and while I only play two cards with the ability ( Briarhorn and Shriekmaw ), they affect the board while raising your experience, and they feel better to return to your hand if you lack the experience than any other creature.
  • filling the graveyard gives you more options for your EOT triggers, so cards like Millikin , Satyr Wayfinder or Nyx Weaver that do that and provide some additional utility are great.
  • some cards will even grant additional effects when sacrificing a creature, namely Catacomb Sifter, Smothering Abomination and Savra, Queen of the Golgari. Those effects are more of a bonus and less of a reason to play those cards, which is why Savra (who doesn't do much else) didn't make the cut in this deck.
  • Meren's ability is obviously the key factor in this deck, but since you can only return a single creature per turn, I play Deadbridge Chant and Strionic Resonator (which copies either of the abilites). On top of that, Doomed Necromancer lets you return creatures at instant speed if need be.
  • Liliana, Heretical Healer   is both underwhelming and awesome in this deck. She seems to not do much on her own and you likely won't ever attack or block with her, but her abilities are all relevant, and this shell makes it easier than any other deck to trigger her.

The sideboard holds instants/sorceries that I consider adding to this deck if I decide to remove Primal Surge, though currently, I enjoy playing with this card a lot!
