Welcome to Nekusar, the Mindrazer EDH. If you ever wanted to simultaneously punch three of your friends directly in the face, you've come to the right place.

This deck is a group-slug deck that I would slot into the Combo Control category. Your overall game plan is to dissuade people from attacking you while you set up the conditions required for you to win. This involves putting cards that hurt your opponents for drawing cards and/or discarding cards into play while also playing cards that make it difficult or undesirable to hurt you. Once you're set up, you can force your opponents to draw and discard a bunch of cards, dealing massive damage to all of your opponents at once and ending the game.

You will like this deck if:

  • You like casting non-creature spells.

  • You like drawing cards.

  • You like taking out multiple people in one go.

You will not like this deck if:

  • You want to play and attack with creatures.

  • You don't like being sneaky or secretive.

  • You like being the aggressor in the match.

Pain permanents:

  • Nekusar, the Mindrazer obviously will hurt your opponents for drawing cards. The easiest one to access because he is always in the command zone.

  • Fate Unraveler is basically another Nekusar, the Mindrazer.

  • Psychosis Crawler and Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind are Nekusar, the Mindrazer analagous. They trigger when you draw cards, which can be better like when paired with Consecrated Sphinx.

  • Sakashima the Impostor can become a copy of any of the aforementioned creatures. Note that she retains her name, so she CAN copy legendary creatures (Nekusar and Niv-Mizzet).

  • Underworld Dreams is just Nekusar's effect on an enchantment.

  • Liliana's Caress and Megrim are discard-based pain permanents that will only work with some of the wheel effects.

  • Bloodchief Ascension takes some time to get going, but becomes a better version of Caress or Megrim. This effect triggers anytime any card is put into an opponents graveyard meaning creature deaths, mill effects, and even resolving instants/sorceries will begin to hurt your opponents. It also gains you life so that you sustain through the hate that will be directed towards you.

  • Waste Not is not technically a pain permanent, but it does provide you benefits off of your opponents discarding cards.

  • Tergrid, God of Fright   is also not actually a pain permanent, but will make your discard-based wheels extremely potent. The only thing better than forcing the big stompy player to toss their threats in the graveyard before they can cast them is forcing them to toss them AND getting them yourself.

  • The Locust God, again, not a pain permanent, but it rewards you for playing the cards you already wanted to play in your deck.

Controlling the game/not dying:

  • Venser's Journal gains you life every turn to stem the bleeding. Ideally you should have plenty of cards in hand, so this should be gaining you a not insignificant amount of life each turn cycle.

  • Whip of Erebos gives your pain permanents (specifically your creature-based ones) lifelink, allowing you to sustain a little bit as you wait to kill everyone.

  • Sigil of Sleep allows you to keep your opponents boards in check by placing it on something like Nekusar, the Mindrazer or Fate Unraveler.

  • Propaganda and Smoke make it more difficult for your opponents to kill you via traditional creature beats.

  • No Mercy makes you a painful target to attack with non-token or non-recursive threats.

  • Blasphemous Act, Damnation, Deadly Tempest, and Cyclonic Rift reset scary boards so that you don't take a million damage.

  • Archfiend of Ifnir can also be a board wipe but will require you to discard some cards to do so.

The Nukes:

As always, suggestions are helpful for refining decks. It is most helpful if you can suggest a card to cut for each recommended card, and perhaps a reason why you think your suggestion is better than the removed card. Finally, don't forget to hit that +1 if you liked the deck!
